Hi, after watching one of your videos I subscribed immediately. After watching many of your videos I realised there was a common theme running through the comments section... And that is people are blown away by the quality of your videos, your ability to explain and communicate what needs to be told is second to none. How you don't have millions of subscribers is one of the mysteries of life. Just outstanding work, love from Australia. Mr.Z 👍👍

Man this is so under-rated channel, so much info which I wouldn't had learnt in years! 1. Floating caliper - Finally understood how outer pads are pulled inside with the help of well lubed guide pins 2. Wow man, all these years I was only looking on outer disc mm, but not the inner one. Somehow I thought both will be worn out evenly, but that's now how it works in real life! 3. I finally know 19 mm is the throw away limit for the disc rotor 4. Understood why the brake lines are in rubber - As the wheel turns and suspension jumps, so the line need to be flexible 5. I used Vernier caliper for years, but only now understood the reason why they have groove on the top!

This was easy to follow and very well done. Thank you sir. I have been having a weird problem with my 2022 Toyota Camry hearing squeaking from the brakes usually just as the car is coming to a stop or when I’m at drive-thru speed and braking. The dealer and a local mechanic shop claim they cannot duplicate the issue and advise to just replace the brakes even tho they have 7mm left on them. This has been very frustrating
@wayofthewrench Жыл бұрын
Glad you liked the video! The squeaking can be caused by not having any silicone grease on all of the metal to metal contacts on the pads. Usually they only squeak at low speeds or when coming to a stop. Another possible solution is to install a higher grade brake pad, sometimes cheap pads can do that. The other thing it could be is a warped rotor that causes an intermittent squeak and sometimes a slight pulsing sensation when lightly braking. I hope this helps. If you deem me worthy I'd really appreciate it if you could share out my channel on your social media so I can help more people. Thanks for your support and the watch! Cheers!

Will watch another time in detail, it's gold. Questions : 1. Don't understand how mechanics can keep update with thousands of car models, eg. log book service each car is different, even jack points are different, do they look up a website or something. 2. New rotor every time change brake pad, is this a con, brake pad material is soft, rotor is massive thick metal, how can brake pad grind down/damage rotor ?!
@wayofthewrench Жыл бұрын
After a while you just get how they all work; however, there are programs that allow you to look up info on a specific car. I use AllData. The surfaces of the rotor that the brake pads clamp on to need to be smooth and flat. If the pads wear out, that surface gets damaged and needs to be replaced so the cost of the brake job goes up. Thanks for the watch! Cheers!

Great overview. I've recently found uneven pad wear, and I've fixed the cause by cleaning and lubing caliper pins and piston. There's still a good bit of material on the pads (~7mm and ~4mm). Would you think that I can I put off replacing the pads?
@wayofthewrench2 жыл бұрын
Hard to give advice over messages without pictures but the safe mechanics advice would be to replace the pads. If the pads looked ok, I would probably clean them up, scuff the friction material and rotors with sandpaper, re silicon grease the metal on metal contacts, and reinstall them. Good luck Bruh!

Hello from croatia. Mine rotor is at 26.2 thickness, and minimum is 26.4. Is it ok to use one more brake pad set on them ?
@wayofthewrench8 ай бұрын

You can also buy a digital caliper which is cheaper than the brake drum caliper shown in this video. It takes up less space, it's more accurate, lighter and quicker and easier to use. Currently $34, compared to $40.
@wayofthewrench2 жыл бұрын
Yeah you totally can but on some drums the depth is too much for those digital calipers and you might be measuring near the edge. Also watch that the lip that isn't touched by the shoes isn't where you measure ( most digital calipers have a notch in the jaws to prevent doing this). Cheers!
