Wow Kansas City! Let us just start by saying that the people here are reason enough to visit. And it's because of the incredibly kind locals, that we were able to put this video together, so thank you! 💞
We had no expectations with this place. We spent 3 weeks house sitting and we didn't plan much because of all the work we had to catch up with, but thanks to everyone we met, we adventured out there to try some of the most popular local recommendations. And honestly guys, we barely scratched the surface. Kansas City has so much to offer and we hope to be back to make a proper video about everything there is to do in Kansas City, not just the food.
We hope you enjoy the video. Don't forget to eat something before you watch ;)
Thanks so much for being here and if you have any questions or recommendations, please leave them in the comments.
See you in the next video!
XO,
Aimara & Gordon

Personally I stick to the smaller BBQ joints like LC's Bar-B-Q and Woodyard's, but theres so much Barbque here, you cant really go wrong, great Italian, Mexican, Thai, Indian.. I am an Oregon transplant to KC. The BBQ scene is ever changing - new places are always popping up and some are better than others. Authur Bryants is pretty a-ok but you also have Chef J and Harp BBQ - both are delicious. And then you have Wolfpack BBQ. And then... you get the idea. There are tons and most have something delicious to offer. Chili and Cinnamon Rolls - definitely a midwest thing - Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri - possibly more. If you see a restaurant called "Runza" and it's the right time of the year - you will see chili and cinnamon rolls offered on the same plate. They aren't TOGETHER on the plate- like you don't cover a cinnamon roll with chili but the flavors of each complement each other.

Chili and Cinnamon rolls is a midwest thing. I came from Iowa to KC and it was big in rural Iowa, seems to be in rural Kansas too. Seems to be hit or miss for people knowing about it in the city or in Missouri in general in my experience. Never have seen it in any restaurant around the metro. I mean in the 80's in NW Iowa school lunch chili day always came with big cinnamon roll side.

Burnt ends are most definitely NOT the leftovers. They're cut from the fattier end of the brisket called the point. They're usually then then thrown in some sauce and smoked a little more which makes them extra delicious. When I was in school the Oklahoma Joe's (in the gas station) was on my way to and from school. The line would form before they opened and it was fantastic. Didn't realize how lucky I was to have been able to eat there so much.

I’m a Kansas City local, and chili with cinnamon rolls is more a Midwest thing than specifically KC. I’ve lived here my whole life and hadn’t heard of it until my wife-who is from a small town in Kansas-introduced me to it. KC born and raised. 25 years on the Kansas side and 20 years on the Missouri side and chili and cinnamon rolls is definitely NOT a thing!! Yes, everyone makes chili. It’s a common midwestern dinner food. We have chili cook off competitions and chili potlucks and chili for football games. The first time I ever heard anything about this weird combination was at my office last year when we had a chili cook off. Someone in the office brought cinnamon rolls because “chili and cinnamon rolls was a Midwest thing.” We were immediately confused by this and took an office poll. Out of 50 people there were only a couple who had said they’d ever heard of it or tried it. Everyone else thought it was weird. I still don’t know if you’re supposed to dip the cinnamon roll in the chili or eat them together or separately? Most of us thought it was pretty gross when our coworker made us try it. From this comment section I’m guessing that some school districts served cinnamon rolls for dessert on the same day they served chili so that’s why they think it’s a thing? I mean, on pizza day they served corn but if I told you everyone in Kansas/missouri/the Midwest eats canned corn with their pizza you’d think that was pretty weird, right? I honestly don’t remember chili day in elementary school, so I don’t remember if my school served cinnamon rolls or not, but it’s just a dessert. If I told you we were served jello on fried chicken day no one would tell you that we’re known for eating chicken and jello here. And chili isn’t really something you go out to eat (yes, I know about Dixon’s in Raytown), it’s something that you cook at home. And everyone makes it a little differently, but it is much more likely to be served with a piece of cornbread on the side.

-Love Black Hole. Best mochi donuts… I just got some this morning. -I am a certified BBQ judge and think Q39 is overrated. I would recommend Slaps. -Messenger coffee is amazing but never heard of a cheese slipper. -KC Joes is fantastic and reliable. Burnt ends are delicious but my favorite is the ZMan. Glad you tried that too! The fry seasoning there and the sauce is awesome! - Yes! Chili and cinnamon rolls together are the best. That’s the way I always make it at home. -Betty Raes is one of my very favorite I’ve cream places but I haven’t been brave enough to try the BBQ one. You did some of my favorite things. I have some great recommendations for you if you are ever back and want them. Subscribing to your channel.

Glad you guys got to try the Zman but I'm surprised so many people recommend Q39. Most people I know who live here (myself included) don't actually like it compared to our other famous options. I would have recommended Jack stack for the ribs and the cheesy corn. Also the pulled pork is to die for at any of our restaurants. Try that next time! Lamar's donuts is also a famous option you should try.

yea everyone we spoke with mentioned Q39, maybe because it was fairly close to where we were staying. It may not be a traditional 'sticky table' bbq joint, but we thought the food was excellent. We'll check out others like Jack Stack and Arthur Bryants next time! And Lamar's 😎

Hiyo, only place you missed that is a great place is called Wabash, and its over in Excelsior Springs Missouri. If you come back i highly recommend the sampler platter and corn fritters. Another place i recommend for breakfast is either Big Biscuit or Corner Cafe, both of which are in Liberty Missouri and the cinnamon rolls in both are amazing.

I live between Kansas City and St Louis Missouri and every year in school we had cinnamon rolls and chili. It was so good that to this day I enjoy chili and cinnamon rolls. Missouri/Kansas is where Midwest meets South meets Southwest, so you get those quintessential "American" foods.

This is a great video. You did really well with your midtown recommendations. Except for the cheese slipper and cinnamon roll thing. Whoever gave you those recommendations is just weird. If you return to KC, you’ll have a thousand more barbecue recs to seek out, but the other low-key meal KC is known for for is tacos! We have no fewer than 150 local Mexican restaurants in the metro. Many small, mom-and-pop shops specializing in street tacos and other foods from their hometown. Mostly Jalisco, Michoacan, and chihuahua. Check out the KCK Taco Trail. Visit KCK tourism has a list of over 50 street taco shops on the KS side alone. My faves are Tacos el Tio and GG’s Barbacoa Cafe.

Next time yall come to KC do a BBQ tour haha!! Crossroads is more artsy but on the weekends during the day everyone goes to West Bottoms for antiques and food or just sleeping in from the nightlife at Power and Light! You guys should defintely try to experience a First Friday! If you like ice cream fairway creamery is by a local chocolatier if I recall and they sell his chocolates there. I had cinnamon rolls and chili at my school as a kid I think its a midwest thing. The cheese slipper originally was from a small hearth bakery called Fevere which Messenger has a bakery called Ibis that took it's place at one time but's no longer there. However, I don't feel the cheese slipper quality is as good as Fevere once was.
