This week, we take a look at a simple armbar application for Naihanchi Nidan, and how strikes can be added using the natural path that the hands travel to reach the armbar.
Waza Wednesday--the day Sensei Richard Poage shares a karate or kobudo technique with the world. Sensei Poage is a Shorin-Ryu Shorinkan practitioner under Sensei Eddie Bethea, and specializes in kata bunkai (analysis). He teaches at Peaceful Warrior Martial Arts & Healing Center in Scottsdale, AZ, and is available to book for seminars.
Peaceful Warrior was founded in 2010 by Renshi Richard M. Poage and Sensei Tiffany Richards, with a mission to create a community where health, wellness and martial arts training are used to better the lives of its members. It is our wish that through the training of the martial arts and other holistic health practices, our students are motivated to live healthier lives physically, mentally and spiritually.

YES! NICE WORK SIR! This is what I like to see in demo videos...and it didn't go on-and-on with minutes of talk and only seconds of demo! He expanded into making it practical for self/street defense, grappling/close quarters if locked in with an opponent, etc.. AND, the way he does it shows some of the Chinese influence in the techniques...much of Shorin Ryu is Shaolin in essence; 'Sho-rin' is Shao-lin in Okinawon/Japanese as I recall. One commentor said he could see some Kenpo-similar techniques...that happens when it's like done like THIS guy. Even during the wrist/arm lock, that off hand can strike with fist or open(kung-fu type finger jab, throat grab, scratch or claw, hair or head pull, palm-heel, clothes pull into a knee/heel/sweep/reap, or simple pull into takedown or pull down to another strike). 40+ years of martial arts and it's been difficult finding someone who demos this well. Motobu(Choki) is credited with saying zomething like '...train in Naihanchi, it's all you will need'. I wouldn't go quite that far, but man, they do go a long way - we just don't see a lot of it demonstrated or taught; his sensei brings a lot of that out in a little bit of time. I didn't appreciate these three kata in the '70s when I learned IN TAE KWON DO training (yes, there was an old school Kwon before the WTF that trained these kata in addition to what were called Korean Tae Kwon Do kata) as I have come to over the years. It's great to see someone expand his presentation of the techniques/applications the way they actually can work and were intended(and of a little of the damaging or deadlier side if you look closely and use your mind to project) over the decades and hundred years or so. I'll be hoping for more from you, Sensei.
