Thank you for the video Mr. Tedrick. There is a tool that i use to pull hopper legs through etc... It is used in hook and latch projects only a couple dollars. You can put it through the line as you did the crochet hook, but this one will close over the line before pulling back through. I do enjoy your videos and thriftiness.

BTW, I like your Frugalness. New word. I'm not a cheap person by nature, but very frugal when it comes to repairing or making things. Before I toss something, I always study it, gears turning, wondering what else it could be used for. Cause sure enuff, if you toss it in the can, next week you will wishing that you hadn't. That is a Crochet Hook. There is another tool that they call a Knit Picker. If you get a snag in something Knitted, it allows you to come in from the back and pull the stitch to the back. The only difference being, is that it has a small latch on that will close around your loop so you won't lose it pulling it thru the line.

What size gear did you use. Door hinge skrew spacing likely standard so will help with my build. Also where did you find gear. I guess another option is an old kitchen mixer setup i saw on another build setup

I really enjoyed this and I'm now thinking I may try this! Of course I probably can't find the gear mechanism you have. Any suggestions as to a "McGyver" something as an alternative?

Using Uni-thread and 2#-6# mono is where I started with furled leaders which work very well for the light stuff like panfish and trout. I bass fish almost exclusively around central Texas so I need the strength of these braid type. I have yet to break one ;) My Tenkara rod friends like these leaders too!

Actually, the best Furled Leader video on UTube. Of the few available, they will make you scratch your head at the end, wondering what you missed. Pretty Ingenius how you used the retractable key ring, the door hinges and gears to spin 2 cup hooks. Most others have to go somewhat by feel of tension. Your Key Ring and graduated marks do that for you while you are at the drill end. I would like to know how you came up with those gears, like what were they originally from, and how you mounted them in between the hinges. Thanks, I downloaded this and added it to my Leader learning process.

+Terry Ashton .. gears are from a film processor that we use to use at the newspaper before we converted to CTP. I used a simple door hinge and two eye hooks bolted together with the gears in the middle. I have built furled leaders like most people do it but wanted something simple that I could use a single continuous strand. The braid fit the bill for a super strong but very limp leader perfect for the type of thick cover bass fishing I do most often.. the only drawback is wind knots can be a tough mudder

Interesting process and true junk genius there William.. That said, from watching the rest of your vids, you kind of strike me as a keep it simple/minimalist when it comes to fishing/paddling gear. Do you really find an advantage to fishing furled leaders for your applications?

Small yak, small waters and taking nothing extra to drag with you.. yes I'm about as lean and thrifty as I can be. The reward for me is in being resourceful and working with next to nothing that's where Junk Genius comes from and is going.. Furled leaders are all about consistence performance and strength for me. Since I fly fish mostly for bass and like to target big fish I need the strongest setup I can handle. I do not like straight heavy mono because of the memory it usually has. If the leader/tippet does not lay flat it increases the reaction time to set the hook. Fly line and mono already have plenty of stretch for shock absorption so why have it in the leader too? Furled leaders can have stretch too if you make them out of mono but when they are made of braid they do not stretch..

I've got a much easier way to build a furled leader now.. Just a drill and a weight.. I'm going to make anther video shortly.. stay tuned.
