In my opinion, this was a great example of leadership from the officer in the recording unit. To him, keeping everyone safe was the most important part of this chase. He coordinated the other officers from the various departments with the help of his dispatch and he kept all of the units informed when someone was moving ahead to set up the spike strips. This officer wasn't a glory hog, wanting to be the one to bust the semi driver first for some silly claim to fame. I wish every officer was this professional.
@benth1627 жыл бұрын
Read my post above Christie. Keeping people safe has many avenues madam, and one is getting that truck stopped. There was more than ample room to have done that. They just didn't want to get their pretty little cop cars dirty or crumpled in the effort, so they ended up with what, almost a dozen cars all with their lights on cruising along with that semi. Please, give me a break........ They could become so professional that they couldn't stop any crime because keeping everyone safe is the supposed highest priority. Bull !!!
@michealkouskoutis65997 жыл бұрын
Rumple Stiltskin How do you suppose they can do that? Putting your car infront of a semi and hoping it stops? Do you know what a semi will do to a 2012 charger? They have restrictions and protocols. They can't just slam their cars into a semi truck. They can't pit a semi, or hit it with their cars... they did the correct thing by using spike strips and sending cars ahead to stop traffic.

@@taunteratwill1787 Diabetic shock, epilepsy, angina, neurological disease, partial stroke, dementia, and more. In this case, while he was charged with OVI (Operating a Vehicle while Impaired) the charges were later dropped. Per law director Tracy Bradford, “The evidence showed that the defendant was suffering from a medical condition that caused his erratic driving, (and) because of that medical condition, we could not prove that he had the requisite mental intent to support a conviction.” They didn't report the condition, probably due to medical privacy issues. But officers on the scene suspected a medical condition because the driver was sweating profusely. was nodding off, and had urinated on himself.

It is always a possibility even though most erratic driving is due to alcohol or drugs. If calling to report a suspected "drunk driver", it is really best to objectively describe the driving behavior without making a judgement. i don;'t think there was an arrest becuase the driver had a heart-attack behind the wheel and appeared to simply try to keep from crashing into anyone while in a minimally-conscious state (which is impressive in itself). any charges the cops placed were dropped becuase the courts don't like punishing someone for falling ill. We don't send people to prison if they have cancer, after all! I'm glad the cops correctly recognized this not as a deranged individual wanting to go on a rampage, but someone needing emergency medical assistance and were able to keep everyone (including the driver and themselves) safe. Just watching this, i was dreading every time the truck drove along the center shoulder of the grassy median, dreading that he'd cross-over into the busy opposing lanes.

After the 34-minute pursuit March 15, from about Tuttle Crossing Boulevard on the northwest side of I-270 to Main Street on the east side of the outer belt, Hilliard police initially charged the 63-year-old Michigan driver with misdemeanor counts of OVI, failure to comply with an officer and failure to drive within marked lanes. All charges were dismissed after a prosecutor reviewed the case and determined the driver had suffered from a medical condition, Andrea Litchfield, a spokeswoman for Hilliard police, said July 28. The city’s law director said the medical condition of the driver was a factor in the case. “The evidence showed that the defendant was suffering from a medical condition that caused his erratic driving, (and) because of that medical condition, we could not prove that he had the requisite mental intent to support a conviction,” law director Tracy Bradford said.

@@shellos8 Heart attacks and strokes are uncommon but can happen when it comes to truck driving. Rare while truck driving but the lifestyle OF truck driver's can lead to this. Truck drivers are on the road for hours on end and sleep is very important for the heart, if you under sleep or over sleep, in can cause serious heart problems in the long run if not taken care of, on top of that, they don't necessarily have the best diets and do much cardio or exercise due to long drives plus lack of movement. The human body itself is and endurance muscle building machine and we were made to run and move just like all the other wild animals in nature. It keeps the heart healthy and improves brain functionality. I'm speaking in general, but you also remember there are billions of humans. Strokes and heart attacks can happen to anyone, even someone in their 20's. Stress is also a factor so you have stress, lack of sleep, poor diet, poor exercise of the body, can all lead to a all sorts of disasters for the heart and this just doesn't include truck driver's but yhe reason I'm making a point of this towards truck driver's because their chances are increased due to the environment they have to deal with while working as a truck driver. This does not even include being stressed out even more so by being away from your family, social isolation and a deadline for delivering the goods with a time period for days.

If cops carried a extendable 5- 7 foot poll with a hook that sat in a position on the door set up like a spot light on a swivel that some cop cars have, this could of been stopped right away. Those hoses hanging underneath the trailer right before the trailer wheels, a air lines feeding the trailer air supply. Semi trucks and trailers have air supplied brakes. So they need air to work. Air Pushes the pads away from the drums. When you push the brake pedal it momentarily takes that air away and thus the pads close up on the drums causing braking. If I cop could get next to the back wheels of the trailer, push a stick to get close enough to hook those air lines then just give it a good pull or hit his brakes while it has those lines hooked, it would damage those air lines at a minim and maybe rip them right out best case. Thus the truck would lose air to the brakes. When it loses air to the brakes it automatically locks the system up by pushing the pads to the drums at full force.....THIS would stop that truck in its tracks within 50 yards. Or options 2 is to damage the cooling system. With a hole in the radiator the engine looses coolant pressure. Semi truck engines cost any where from 20-35K $. So when one looses cooling pressure or oil pressure they have fail safes that will kill the engine within 30 seconds of the coolant light getting kicked on or low oil light getting triggered. This prevents damage to the block. NO Water pressure or NO oil pressure and the engine shuts itself off. Nothing the driver can do about it. It takes about 30 seconds cause they are designed to give the driver enough time to pull over out of traffic, but it shuts it down. Then you have the brand new 2016 and up trucks which have a kind of driver assist system on the front combined with a automatic braking system. If you look close on some bumpers of the newest semi trucks they have a small black box on the bumper. If someone gets infront of that semi and the gap closes, the truck slows itself down to prevent a accident and will even come to a stop if needed. So in theory, if the truck had that driver assist system, a cop could just get in front of the truck and start slowing down. The engine would lose power and the truck would brake by itself. Trucks are not that hard to stop at all. You just have to know how they work and what makes them NOT work. Police are just not trained and do not understand trucks. They arrest people not drive or work on trucks all day.

Gcal1956 Maybe you should make that "stick or hook" system and then demo it the PD! Saving lives and making bank@ same time! Smart idea indeed! Fucking would save the PD a lot of wasted personnel chasing a freaking Semi for over 45 min & if there's another emergency somewhere else....the entire county police force isn't tied up chasing said Semi. Cheers!
@Gcal19567 жыл бұрын
it would be a long stick with a hook LOL if a police agency cant afford that then they got other problems.
@Gcal19567 жыл бұрын
thanks but it really isnt anything special. they just need to have a long stick with a hook on the end. a hockey looking stick but with more of a hook. pull along side said truck, reach out and grab a line. hook on end to the side of your car so it dont rip your arm off and then the other on a air line and hit the brakes and watch the truck come to a stop. 18 wheels hitting the brakes all at once. problem solved. sometimes in life the simplest things solve the biggest problems.

@@Gcal1956 EXCELLENT!!! You have removed from the vehicle you desperately want to stop... the actual ability to come to a controlled stop! But have found an amazing way to injure or kill the driver, any passengers, and any officers in close pursuit - damage the truck and/or trailer (which is most likely not owned by the driver) - and disable any police vehicle involved in a bad attempt (which would be most) while also causing death or injure to additional officers who 'miss'. You must be some kind of genius!

It amazes me that the police don't even apparently know that on any slow speed attempt to stop a tractor-trailer truck, all they would have to do is drive alongside (either side) in the area between the tractor and the trailer and use a pole-type limb cutter and cut the truck's rubber hose/air line that hangs in the air between the cab and the trailer. That would apply ALL his brakes after his air leaked out. Then the locked brakes keep the truck stationary, even if he tried to drive. Easily accomplished with a 2-man unit.

crkonehd - The poor guy was having a nervous breakdown and pissing all over himself, according to arresting officers. He probably finally realized he had no medical coverage, no retirement plan, no money in the bank and no 'pilot points' to buy dinner and/or take a shower with. He had to take out a pay day loan of $300 to renew his CDL; his wife and kids left him because he was never home and earned no money, probably due to being fined for draconic ETA rules, forced to buy his own fuel, etc., etc.,. Sarcasm aside, charges were later dropped when it was ruled the driver was suffering from an undisclosed medical condition(?) despite being originally charged with DUI.

At first I was on board with the ‘medical condition’ but as it went into the night I started questioning that theory being that he was literally able to stay straight, wasn’t rolling down the windows at least to signal desperation, he was tapping the breaks towards the end meaning he was awake and alert. Could’ve been a drunk driver sobering up. But hey that’s just my opinion. I’d love to know the outcome of this incident since whoever posted this didn’t provide an outcome or a link to the story.

What does happen when air brakes lines are cut at the tank behind the diver? Do they locked up? I would get on when he is very slow and cut his lines and thened jumped off or wait to when they lock uped. Or braked out the back window and say hello and spray him may be with pepper stuff. If did his brakes locked uped he could not drive more at all right? I saw cops shoot at a truck air tank as he was running fromed them and then that whole truck just did locked up and stop. May be these old of cops could not jump on his truck but I could

Interesting video. A wide range of comments. Must say I semi driver did pretty good not to roll the truck over. Your driving 60 to 70 mph with half of the truck on the shoulder and half in the grass. And not roll it. Pretty impressive. I do agree to many officers to stop one truck. Just curious to the people said elds would have prevented this. How so? I don't see how a electronic log would stop a truck. And if the driver was suffering from a medical emergency would know he was being followed by 30 police cars. Wish to know what the out come was.
@rosie200982 жыл бұрын
All of the police cars wasn’t JUST to take down the semi. They were shutting down the highways and keeping people off the roads. This chase went on for 30 minutes, it must’ve covered many many miles. It wouldn’t have been possible for 2-5 police cars to be able to handle traffic alone, not even trying to set up the stop sticks
