In a way, you could see what they wanted to do: create a more serious storyline built around a real life situation, and the WWE has been able to do more serious, blurring the line storylines nowadays well and with enough care given to them (sometimes you have to do some risqué things to illicit emotional responses). They made a similar like story work with the Jericho vs. CM Punk feud in 2012, which brought up the reasons CM Punk was "straight edge" (also because the two performers have always been able to pull those types of stories off well). Thing is, it felt like more exploitation than anything else with those two storylines due to them not knowing how to pull storylines like that off. If those stories happened with today's WWE, I bet they would've taken better care to it. Might have still been cringe to watch, but at least not as exploitive.

Halloween Havoc 98 is a perfect example of dream matches on paper not turning out great in reality. If you looked at this card without having seen the PPV it's absolutely stacked! DDP v Goldberg, Hogan v Warrior, Nash v Hall, Steiner v Steiner, Sting v Bret. I think this is the point where fans started really losing faith in WCW with the messed up PPV ending and then showing the match on free tv the next night
@ShaunInce123 Жыл бұрын
You can make a case here that DDP could have broken the streak here. It would have been a better ending to what we end up with at Starrcade 98. And we know what ends up leading to at the beginning of 1999.
@mulldrifterz6469 Жыл бұрын
If he won, Nitro might've held onto the ratings war and went back and forth a bit more going into 1999 a little longer. Goldberg was better at chasing the title, but holding it was boring.
@rockajabroni5975 Жыл бұрын
They could've implented that spear on the ringpost as a way to stir controversy, claiming Goldberg concussed himself. Then Nash wins WW3 as planned, loses to DDP at Starrcade where Goldberg wins a nr1 contender's match. Laying the groundwork for a rematch further down the line.

Part of the reason the NWO storyline was almost insulting at this point is that every single NWO adjacent storyline is “this member is going to turn face we promise 1000% this time PSYCH! WHAT A SWERVE” They already did the Buff fake face turn at least three times this year. Warrior v. Hogan is what happen when pat Patterson is not pre scripting every move
@martynodonnell Жыл бұрын
NWO storyline should have ended shortly after Starrcade 97. Sting should have dethroned Hogan clean, leading to the split of the NWO shortly after. Issue was WCW had very little new ideas and the creative clause people such as Hogan had meant the older stars wouldn’t get out the way, so that new stars could be born. The Hogan VS Warrior match was all about Hogans ego and getting his win back, from 8 years prior. WCW heavily dropped the ball with Warrior, who let’s face it outside of the 80s and the early 90s, was very out of place in wrestling. By the time the Halloween Havoc match came around very few of the fans actually cared about the match.
@mangrove Жыл бұрын
They were overdoing it with swerves well before Russo arrived. Thing is, a Buff face turn could have done well, especially after his neck injury. Easy storyline to write, and they pissed it away.

Why was WCW so afraid of turning Buff Bagwell face? They had two good opportunities to do it and decided not to. I think having a face Buff would have been good during this time and you could have had him team up with Rick legitimately. instead, its just the same story over and over again and you can see why people got tired of it. I think that was a lot of what was causing problems for WCW during this time. Too much wanting to keep the status quo. EDIT: I forgot this was the PPV where it got cut out before the main event. And people had to be livid, because this was not only match of the night, but probably Goldberg's best match in his WCW run. And while his stock was already rising, I think this match helped elevate DDP even more.

T*s are offensive to straight men because it's viewed as if they're trying to trick or deceive dudes into seeing them as women. Not only are we expected to accept their "lived truth" they also try to force normal people into changing the way we speak around them. I'm not on board with any of it & I'm not going to be kind to these liars. I don't know what Steiner said, but he's an old school badass. They don't get much more masculine than the Steiners. Especially given how the streak eventually ends. Another case of WCW choosing to prevent stars from being created.

Would have been better than how the steak eventually ended.

If Goldberg didn’t get hot in 1998 I feel like DDP would have won the title. They waited to long to pull the trigger on him and then they turn him heel because WCW can’t give fans any happy ending

Lol no. You aren't thinking right. You just like DDP.

Tonight men as close as brothers torn apart by vice, a hit man trying to take his shot against a scorpion, two titans of the industry do the dance one more time in a clash of block buster proportions, and the world heavy-*thank you for watching.*

As a huge Bret Hart fan as a kid, I was really disappointed with how WCW handled him.

You did this PPV way more justice then it deserves. It’s kinda sneaky good.

This show features so many things. Goldberg’s best match that goes more than 5 minutes, the bizarre sight of Wolfpac Sting with a goatee, and one of the worst matches in the history of wrestling featuring arguably the biggest name in wrestling history and one of the most amazing wrestling stages ever.

Goldberg/DDP was shown the next night on Nitro and the announcers hyped it as a special treat and a bold move to show the previous night's main event for free. I was unaware at the time that they had no choice but to show it due to WCW's screw up.

It is still crazy to me to think that it was only 8 years between the two Hogan/Warrior matches. When I was a kid that was a lifetime. Now that I’m an adult it seems like nothing.

DDP shouldve won the title that night. It wouldve made the ppv way more memorable as well as given Goldberg something to come back from and build towards.

Sting's got a sick new goatee, and that's gonna help him defend against the chinlock... I love this guy 🤣🤣🤣

Crazy to think that 2 guys from the same territory were so high on the card against 2 all time legends. Dingos made it to the big show together

Halloween Havoc 1998 was an amazing PPV Hulk Hogan Vs Ultimate Warrior was terrible no wonder why their Match at Wrestlemania 6 was better best part of their Match here was Hogan Botching the fireball spot and accidentally Burning his eyebrows awesome Review.

I've never found a source to back this up, but I heard from the rumor mill that the original plan waa for DDP to beat Goldberg. The week of the PPV was when TV Guide had a series release with different WCW guys on the covers and Goldberg's had him with the belt. Apparently either Bischoff or Kevin Sullivan said if people then tuned into Nitro and Goldberg wasn't champ it would confuse them.

I remember switching back and forth to wcw and wwf and when they said the Goldberg ddp match was gonna be shown for free I tape that match and use to watch goldbergs entrance before I use to go to the gym

Aw man reliving Hogan vs Warrior 😅. That certainly made my day. But DDP vs. Goldberg slapped though.
