It's so sad yet still amazing seeing the terrible decisions around the nWo accumulating in this awesome retrospective. It began with not letting the group fall apart right away when Sting won the world title. Bringing that title back to Hogan, letting Bret Hart "associate" himself with them out of the blue, turn the Giant back heel with absolutely no buildup, and then splitting the Outsiders just when people got fully excited about the Wolfpack was just an unbelievable string of stupid decisions playing out here.

Yeah as much as the WWF played their cards right in 1997 & 1998, a big part of WCW’s fall was their own doing

Agreed. This year was AWESOME but the gradual decline of wcw. The whole nwo thing had got stale breaking it up freshened it up greatly but was all undone by Early 99. Terrible decisions made to appease scum like Hogan and others unwilling to what was rivbt for business.

Never truly capitalize? The Cruiserweight division was one of the main reasons WCW beat WWF for 83 weeks. It was arguably the most popular division in WCW and was featured heavily in all of WCW programing. I don't know what more you wanted them to do with the division.

@@butchvito This was one of the few times WCW put real effort into creating a storyline with the Cruiserweight Division. I'd argue the popularity is because of the effort the wrestlers put into the matches, as opposed to anything WCW was doing to support them.

Wasn't that on Bret's book also? That Vince allegedly told him that Savage was gonna put him over on WM IX. Edit: The only thing I don't believe about the book is Warrior putting him over at RR 1993. This was the first PPV I ever watched live, but it was interesting how I did. From January 1996 when I became a wrestling fan until this night, I would always put the TV on Channel 98, and listen to the scrambled broadcast (just snow, but the audio played fine). This night I was outside jumping on my neighbor's trampoline when my Mom comes out and says "They are showing that wrestling PPV for free right now!!" I'm like "WHAT?!?!!!". I dash inside and turn to Channel 98, and sure enough, the DDP/Raven cage match was just starting. The feed never went to snow the rest of the broadcast. A very cherished memory of mine. After this night, I didn't see another PPV live again until February 2006, when my old wrestling friends and I would go to Hooters and watch No Way Out 2006 (Taker/Angle). We would do it every month (except WrestleMania. We would do those at our homes) until No Mercy 2007 (3x WWE Title defenses. Still the most exciting PPV I have seen to this day. Everyone in Hooters was STANDING the last few minutes of HHH/Orton Last Man Standing). After that night, Hooters stopped showing WWE PPVs and went exclusively UFC.

I've always been interested in this little mini push Fit Finlay got during this time, he was always treated as someone who was legitmately tough but was never really pushed above the TV/Hardcore title level, him randomly besting two guys like Benoit and Booker T that in my opinion were MUCH higher on the card than him was interesting and I feel like the TV title started to get used for more experimental stuff like that during this time with Finlay's reign, Booker T getting a singles title after being a tag guy for ages, Jericho getting a non-cruiserweight title, and previously Perry Saturn after being a guy in the flock, shame the TV title essentially died soon after all this, it was an interesting little time for this midcard belt.

And absolutely one of the funniest, and yet not corny heels ever. He was why I was a wcw fan over wwf. I see it as a morale boost. but for anyone who doesn't know, according to Russo, Vince was planning on showing up but his daughter's college graduation kept him from doing it. But Russo said Vince was fired up about it and didn't like having to back down.

Had such high hopes for Bret Vs Savage it was okay but could have been better Sad seeing Savage slowly declining and breaking down his knees are completely shot at this point and when he comes back in 99 from his injury he's so big and jacked he can barely move as a character Savage was still entertaining but he just couldn't go like he did during the DDP feud.
