In 63 there were 3 full-size Chevy models. Biscayne, the entry-level car. Basically taxi cabs & police cars. Next step up, Bel-Air. A mid-level model for budget minded folks. Top of the line was the Impala.

Monroe is an adding machine. That particular model brings back fond memories for me. My great aunt had one, and I used to watch her meticulously do the books for her gas station using it. I was always fascinated by how it worked and the heavy sound it made. I’d love to find one in working condition someday, though the last one I saw, like the one in this video, looked like it was frozen up and no longer functional. This is why I love your channel so much. It’s not just about watching you clean these wonderful vehicles but also about the memories you bring back for so many people. This is the second thing you’ve had on your channel that reminded me of her. The first was a Lincoln Continental from the 70s. Thank you for all the great memories!

"Belair" was a trim package. Especially used in reference to the Chevelle, but also used on the Impala and other cars too? The top Chevelle trim level was a "Belair".

I'm 69 & those cars were a dime a dozen back then. Had many friends that owned similar ones. That one cleaned up really nice thanks to you guys great work. As for the 1 gallon gas can in the garage, everybody back then owned one. You gotta remember, gas was only around 30 cents per gallon then. Those were the days.

Absolutely. In 1969, my Bro came home on 'leave' to show us his first car - a red 1963 Impala SS coupe, with a 3-speed on the floor. And in the driveway: my dad's '63 Bel Air wagon; my Mom's '63 blue Impala sedan; and my Granny's '63 Sport Sedan in (to this day my favorite color): Azure Aqua. They truly were EVERYwhere! And they were darned good cars.

Happy Birthday! Your little Bel-Air was once a common as a Toyota Camry is today in the 21st century. The example you did a wonderful job of cleaning up is a one owner survivor car, the last car the owner ever had. It is original mile and had very minimal use, and was kept up very well, not driven in the winter, and stored inside a dry garage. The major body damage was from backing into things when the owner had become very elderly, and the surface rot was from accumulation of debris decaying on top of the flat surfaces as it rested forgotten in its newer location. So glad you were able to tidy it up, and I hope it goes to a respectful new home. Amazing the mice didn't get to it!

Also that trunk was that huge for the trailering package and it works awesomely for camping and fishing trips and hunting trips. My Father's '71 Bel Air had vent slats in the trunk lid so we could put our hunting dogs in the trunk with blanket padding and haul them with us. They actually loved riding back there. 😊

First Off-HAPPY B-day RJ! 🎂 I've stayed in Cleveland many times. My nieces still live there on 95th Street. Have watched this Channel for quite a while now. My opinion, WD Detailing is above and beyond the BEST clean and detail shop I have literally EVER seen. Absolutely love the hard work and detail you both do each time. I agree. These guys are supposed to be in the business of saving older cars, but know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about them. Even at the most fundamental level like "why would someone carry a one-gallon gas can with them?" or that the first thing to try with an old engine is to simply see if you can get any rotation out of the engine by manually grabbing the fan blades and see if you can give it a turn. It's astounding how little these guys actually know about cars. I'm embarrassed for them.

Nothing like a 1960s 'standard size' Chevrolet with that marvelous workhorse of an inline six under the hood, and Powerglide to boot! Just off the top of my brain I believe the 230 six in that year and configuration was good for 140-145 BHP. Fantabulous!

The entire series of engines was commonly called “Turbo-thrift”, although the name was first used on the 230 cubic inch version that debuted in 1963, but the the new engine featured seven main bearings in lieu of the four bearings designed of it predecessor, the “stovebolt” engine witch the stovebolt was considerably smaller and approximately 100lbs lighter.

I got a kick out of the Saint Christopher on the dash. He was the patron saint of safe travels. A lot of religious folks back then had a little statue or a pin in their card. My dad had one. This reminds me of a priest mobile as we used to call them. All black, not flashy 6 cylinder, low milage and looking at the wear of the interior it didn't look like a family car. Brings back memories.

My aunt always had a lil St. Christopher statue or clip on medallion of him on her sun visors in remembrance of her brother Chris who passed away due to a car accident. Out of the 27 years ive known her shes yet to get into an accident, so maybe there is something to it.

Back in the olden days as you kids would call it😂 most of the General Motors cars (Chevrolet, Buick, Pontiac, Oldsmobile) would all use the same body and just change a few things like the grill, tail lights, bumper that we’re actually chrome and put their emblem or hood ornaments on them. The big steering wheel was because it didn’t have power steering.

That particular car was equipped with power steering. Turbo- Thrift denoted the inline sixes (194, 230, 250, 292). Small block V8s were Turbo- Fire, W- series big block V8s were Turbo- Thrust. This car could be had with a 230, 283, 327, 409, or the ultra- rare W series 427.

From low end to high, the chevy Biscayne, Bel-Air, and Impala were Chevy's full-size offerings for 1963. Engines ranged from the 232 inline 6, the 283 v8, 327 v8, and the 409 v8. My Dad had a 1963 Impala convertible with the 232 6 with 3 on the tree. It would be the following year (64) when Chevy would introduce the Chevelle. My mother would have 3 of those before switching to Buicks. '64, '68, and '72. But the 63 Impala that Pop had featured the 6 taillights. His previous 1960 Bel-Air has just the 4, a feature shared with the Biscayne. The 232-6 engine was about 130 hp, and fairly economical to run. They always seemed greasy and dirty. The Turbo-Thrift designation referred to the 232 cu. in. 6 cylinder with way over 100 hp, 130 as I recall. Thanks for the memories guys !

If it was properly cared for and stored dry in that garage when not in use, it's not too surprising it survived that long. I bet most of the corrosion on the top of the hood and the roof, and the water in the trunk are the result of the roof collapse. Still, it's in overall good shape, which is cool to see.

R.J. Happy belated birthday! To the viewers; these guys are good at what they do and they do it for us… the viewers. Please note that they may not have the same knowledge base of these older cars as we May not have the same knowledge of the newer cars they do. It is refreshing to watch and see what questions they have regarding these older cars that we may have had in high school. I enjoy it because my kids would have the same questions. In my 1964 1/2 Mustang, my son was looking for the air conditioner knobs and power window switches. I had to explain and demonstrate the 2/60 air conditioner… (2 window vents at 60 mph). These old cars had large trunks so that we could get more people in at the drive-in movies w/o having to pay for them.

Wow, not only is the Chevy from the year I was born, but it is the exact car my grandparents had when I was a kid. However, their´s was white with either blue or black interior if I remember correctly. They kept it until 69 or 70 when they got a Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser station wagon with the faux wood paneling to fit all the grand kids.

Chevy produced the Bel Air from 1950 to 1975 (U.S.) and 1981 (Canadian). I owned 3, a 1954 (2 dr sdn), a 1961 (L6 2 dr flat top), and a 1963 (L6 4 dr sdn) like the one in this video only Ermine White with blue interior. The 1963 L6 upgraded to a 7 main bearing. The Turbo Thrift was just marketing jargon. I also had a 1963 Impala SS with the 327 ci 4 barrel carb and it got better mpg than the 1963 L6 if you kept your foot out of it and drove it sensibly. Dupont owned a major share of GM and that is why so much of these cars had their seat materials and paints. I used to call my '54 Bel Air "The Dupont Special." Great job on this car, brings back a lot of memories.

My Aunt had a 64 Belair very similar to this one. The only difference was the grill. Interior was almost the same. 6 cylinder power steering no power brakes. . The differences between the Byscane, had one taillight on each side, Belair had 2 taillights each side and the Impala had 3 each side. Great running car. Turbo thrift means a semi automatic trans. Powerglide was the automatic.

Yes 230ci. Turbo was in reference to the turbo 350 transmission i believe. And thrift because the 6 was a thrifty economical cheaper engine that sipped gas but was also a torque’y little engine.
