What dirt does Kennedy have on Iger? No matter what scenario I come up with to try to figure things out, Lucasfilm has lost money, lost money, and lost money. And I don't mean simply failed to make money - this studio has CONSISTENTLY lost hundreds of millions of dollars - on Solo and Episode 9, on Indy 5. And the money the Disney+ series "earned" through streaming, even when Mando was big enough to draw new subscribers to D+, is negligible, if they actually earned Disney anything at all (which means, all they did was cost 9 - figures per series and their most consistent viewers were people who watched them just so they could point and laugh at how bad they were. This studio has done NOTHING since Disney bought it that ADDS to Disney's bottom line - just subtracts - in $100,000,000 increments! The only answer I can come up with as to how Kathleen Kennedy still has a job at Lucasfilm is that she has some truly damning dirt on Disney. She should have been sent packing after Solo bombed (especially when a significant part of the wakeness and expenseo, certainly after running up the costs on Episode 9 to over a half-billion with reshoot after reshoot trying to find a version of the movie audiences didn't hate.

The “Beauty and the Beast” and “The Lion King” remakes earned more than “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker”, and both cost a fraction to produce. Even “Avatar: The Way of Water” cost less than that. So whenever someone wonders why Galaxy’s Edge was replaced with the Pride Lands, at Disneyland Paris, this is exactly why. Same goes for why Bob Iger would rather invest in building another Pandora, and will probably will build unique versions in the international parks. It was very easy for Kathleen Kennedy to gamble on a bloated budget for a new “Star Wars” trilogy, because she was not the one footing the bill. Disney would have to be insane to ever greenlight any more “Star Wars” films, or theme park expansions.

Just to be clear, as I understand the distribution the box office gross gets split between the production company and the theatres. So, $1.6 billion is cut two ways. So, to break even on let’s say $800 million total overall cost the gross needs to be about twice that. This weird accounting to mask overall cost by separating production cost (borne by Lucas & Dis) and marketing (could also be Dis & subsidiaries) is why talent who sign in for a % of profits often get a % of zero profit. The only people who did get paid are the “below the line” (boom operators, camera operators, grips, gaffers, etc.). In LALA and the TMZ (thirty mile zone) they are covered by collective bargaining agreements. Somehow I expect in the UK these are union jobs and hope the UK government wouldn’t fork over £100,000,000 when such workers aren’t paid. One hopes.

They were still negative from marketing costs, but you said $250M or less for marketing... so that's a ~$250M loss from the theatrical run... It's possible they broke even or made some change from ancillary markets At any rate, it's still a failure because it wasn't the cash cow a Star Wars movie is supposed to be and because of the damage to the brand moving forward.

The accounting we get from these videos doesn't always make sense. This is what I came up with: Gross box office: $1.07 billion The theaters get roughly half, so: Net box office: $503.5 million. Add in the UK tax credit of $1.062 million and You get roughly $610 million. So if the final cost of making this film is $700 million, the result is a loss of $90 million. HUH?!?!!

@@MSgt5J071The tax credit is not part of the revenue.

George drove the shit out of that car and sold it for massive profit before the wheels fell off. I wonder what he’s driving now?

Maybe they should go LOW BUDGET for STAR WARS. If excitement Returns to STAR WARS they could spent more money on a SWfilm again.
