Nurses say weekly because we are paid hourly per week. So it's the health care jargon. We get paid overtime too. Although they are paying rent that's separate from their weekly pay. Travel nurses get a housing stipend so the rent is not coming from their pay but in addition to. We don't say salary either. A salary nurse get the same money regardless if they work overtime. Nurse Practitioners and nurse managers are salaried. An hourly nurse makes more than salaried nurse because of overtime and shift differential. We don't know our annual income until the end of year because shifts gets canceled if patient ratio is low. 30 years being an RN here. Never did the Covid thing. I had the experience to know the psychological outcomes for my fellow nurses would be PTSD. They deserve every dollar they earn. Made me cry for them. I hope she gets therapy. I see this bubbling up when she gets older.

When the couple spoke about their experiences during COVID, I was heartbroken. Absolutely heartbreaking. She only touched on a little bit, and the full reality is *so* much worse. I don't care what people decide to believe or disbelieve - that gives them NO reason to mistreat anyone else. The abuse from society was/is doubly traumatizing and massively unwarranted. I'll never forget one day, a nurse completely breaking down because of the overwhelming stress, pressure of the job, seeing all the dead, dying sick, families (angry, fear stricken, grieving), etc., then being unable to go home and get even a hug because of fear of spreading the virus to loved ones. The virus was bad enough, but the dehumanization of people who were in healthcare -who trying to help, and even laid down their lives to care for others - is grossly underestimated and we need resources and conversations to raise awareness, provide support and help them heal.

Absolutely society needs to pay for first responder aftercare. Secondary trauma is deadly. I highly recommend Self Compassion training.

When I was in high school, I decided to do regular volunteering in a hospital (no intention to work in the industry, just decided to give back to community), I was the type that had to go into every patient room and basically help them get what they need, make conversation, etc. Even though it was overall a very positive experience, in those 3 years, I did meet some verbally abusive patients, deaths of people I've recently spoken to, and family who were on their last straw. Some family members told me I saved them by being there for them, maybe cause I was so young, but the abuse from the patients and reoccurring deaths also got to me. I can never imagine working full time, overtime, and during COVID in an environment like this. Deep respect.

I’m an ICU PA who worked through the pandemic and this episode had me in tears. I love this couple and they deserve every cent they earned! The part with the disconnect between staff nurses and travel nurses really hit home and to be honest, I always sided with our staff nurses, being on staff myself. NYC nurse here that worked through the pandemic. Props to them being on this show and sharing that traumatizing experience. Most of us haven't recovered mentally and emotionally from the pandemic. If anybody is out there struggling from PTSD like I was please look into EMDR therapy, this was better than CBT or other modalities I tried. And thank you fellow nurses and MD and RTs and residents and pharmacy (stop taking long to verify my meds LOL) and CNA and PCT and transporters and cleaning staff for the work you guys do and especially did during the hardest moments for society. As an ICU nurse who worked covid in NYC and Texas, I still deal with the aftermath. I never deal with anxiety and panic attack until covid. Lots of nights filled with nightmares. Just an awful time that we still deal with unfortunately. I refuse to feel bad about the money I make as a travel nurse simply because some staff nurses rather stay comfortable where they're at. Traveling is very uncomfortable; you get 1 day or just 4 hours of orientation and they give you the worst of the worst, most ppl don't help including nurses aides who get paid to help nurses. Everyone questions your skills even when you have a badge that clearly states you're certified in your specialty. I feel for her feeling bad about the money she busts her behind for. I had to say to myself "if nothing else good happens at a contract, I get to see my paycheck weekly and be reminded of my why". I do this to earn more so I can invest, retire early, retire my mom bc she's the only thing I have left (I lost my dad and grandma same year during covid). I just want to take care of my family and have time to enjoy their presence.

I'm an anesthetist. I see this ALL the time. The nurses talk so ugly about some of the travel nurses. "How do they not know that." When it's a hospital culture issue not a competency issue. EVERY hospital does things differently and some radically so. Thats hard to account for in your field and something you get very little understanding. And you shouldn't feel bad about the money. Hospitals run themselves as a business and so we shouldn't begrudge staff who do the same and take these high paying, hard potisions. If anything, it's hospitals unwilling to pay their resident staff enough that causes staffing issues so they have to turn around and higher travellers. It's a systemic hospital management issue

I haven’t finished watching yet, but I wanted to add some additional context/reference to how the couple refers to their pay and earnings ( I’m at around 47minutes at the time of writing). Travel nurses work on 13 week contracts and get stipend pay that is not taxed. The stipends make up a big portion of their take home. Additionally, contracts /pay can be unpredictable. Your contract can be canceled with little/no notice or your pay reduced significantly. The rate that you get in one contract can also vary a lot from the next depending on demand, time of year, location, work schedule and differential and overtime pay. It’s hard for a travel nurse to accurately say how much they will make in a month due to this.

Nurses were screwed out of their wages during Covid, that has nothing to do with you but with the existing medical system. That’s where their anger should be directed to and not to Travel nurses.

They were not trash talking at all. The nurses who stayed home made a good decision, being paid $60k-80k annually to put your life at risk and emotional trauma was not worth it. Hence they stayed home and took the unemployment. The only winners here were the ones who quit or the ones who became travel nurses and earned 4x. The rest of them were all screwed by the medical system.

It's the patients who survived who have the stories. Trust me. What we saw and heard and experienced. And none of us came out of it wealthy. On the contrary, many suffered financial ruin. The health care providers are not the victims. They are not the survivors. This was hard to listen to.

We each have our story. Sounds like both experiences were traumatic. Nurses watching people die and not having control to fix it experienced trauma. Patients in the same experience also did. I still struggle with long covid symptoms from a mild infection and still can’t go for a walk or work full time (when I was formerly very active, owned my own business, and am a single mom with kids who rely on me). I’m no longer independent. I let people down at work…. Kids who needed me…. And it’s a hard thing to forgive. We don’t have to compare experiences. That being said….. people protect yourself. If it’s triggering to hear experiences from a different angle, avoid it. That’s ok. I have DV experiences and need to avoid certain material around it. It’s self care. I’m sorry that we’ve all been through so much.

As a travel nurse we talk about weekly earnings. Your contracts, usually 8-13 week increments, are made based on the weekly salary and your “contract” can be cancelled anytime by the facility.

$150k is too much to spend on a car unless you are a multimillionaire. Even then after you have become a multimillionaire you will likely realize why it is not a good idea to spend that much on a car. I'm a critical care nurse and worked through the pandemic. There are a couple of things I need to say and hope you hear them. I developed SARS and I can't express my gratitude to all the personnel that kept me alive and as comfortable as possible. Second, as a former wartime military wife, I did exactly as you have done. I took every spare cent and paid off every debt including car and house. Security and preparing for wartime contengencies were top priority. I commend you for identifying and executing your exit strategy. By having prepared for an uncertain future, I am in a much less stressful situation to continue my rehabilitation. Bless you.

This is great. As a nurse who went thru the pandemic. I am experiencing the same things. I left ICU from burnout. Got cancer and changed my outlook on life. The money was great. I enjoy my staff job and adjusting my rich life based on today. Glad I made the money. But it wasn’t all that I expected.

Oh my gosh I love your podcast Ramit but this episode I balled my eyes out listening to Jenee tell us of her pandemic experience. I am so so sorry you went through that Jenee both being around all that loss which must have been so hard on so many levels to the outside insanity you had to deal with. You are a hero for the work you did then in such difficult circumstances but also in general nurses and doctors save lives everyday and deal with loss too being able to get up and do your job everyday knowing there will be those losses that you just can’t do anything about and trying anyway makes you an amazing human you both totally deserve the income you earned I just wish you hadn’t had to go through so much unnecessary trauma on top of the pandemic trauma itself to get there. ❤❤❤❤ thank you Ramit for letting Jenee shine a light on what it was truly like to be a nurse through that time ❤❤❤❤

Lease the Audi... Try it out before owning the car. No maintenance, new car. Why not? Usually leasing is a bad idea, but in his case it works, Audi and BMW is notorious for having huge repair bills.

150k is a house, that's grounds for divorce in my opinion. If you are not making 450 grand a year that's not an option. Those cars aren’t in for the mileage, after a hundred thousand miles your dashboard will be lit up like a Christmas tree😢

I am also on the side of the wife as well, spending 150k on car is not a wise financial decision. Super cars are depreciating assets with high insurance and very expensive maintenance.

Buying a car is dumb in itself for that price. How about lease it for a year and get it out of your system. Spend maybe 10k to have your dream car for a year. Then be practical. I am totally on the woman's side as well. We all have dreams as a kid, you grow out of them.

Jenee & Dan you'll are amazing. Both risked your lives during the pandemic & continue to do so. Having said this, i would like to add, but I don't want to hurt you Jenee. I respect you a lot. 1. Jenee try to stop mentioning that you helped Dan pay off his IRS. Its in the past & it hurts him a lot 2. He contributed to the house & also is contributing to the holidays you like to have, so try & be considerate towards his dream car. Life is short, let him be happy too. I just discovered your show and this episode is especially interesting to me because I'm a RN, but haven't done traveling. I understand why Janee and Dan talked about their "weekly income." Traveling nursing contracts are normally in a 13-week contract. You'll get a based hourly rate that is taxed, but then you'll also get a different hourly $ amount that is not taxed. The taxed and non-taxed amounts are what you'll be paid for for the duration of your contract. Travel nuring is very lucrative compared to just taking a position at a hospital somewhere. By the way, travel nurses don't work all 52 weeks of the year. In my hospital, travel nurses can do up to 3 contracts (3 × 13 weeks = 39 weeks) without triggering the rules from our hospital nurses' union. So they mostly would seek out their next contract elsewhere. They'll usually take a few weeks off between contracts. It won't surprise me if they work < 45 weeks /year.

Janee’s description of being a healthcare worker during Covid was so devastatingly sad. All the people saying that those workers were/are heroes will unfortunately never be enough to undo the harm and hatred from the deniers and conspiracy theorists. Not to mention the mental anguish of dealing with patients, and their friends and family even if they supported the healthcare workers. That must have been awful as well. I wish them the best. ❤

A shame on all the horrible people who were brainwashed through media or social media and became hateful against common knowns that our medical workforce keeps us safe, that masks have been a thing for DECADES, and vaccines save lives. A nurse friend tried to talk me into travel nursing. I'm so glad I declined. Experience taught me this would not end well for those on the front line. We are no longer friends because my friend of 30 years became someone I didn't recognized. Suddenly everyone who earned less than her is not worthy and the lack of empathy towards others was too much. I had to end our 30 year friendship. She was a Covid nurse. It hardens people.

I think it would be nice to discuss the cost of owning a 150K car and how often the car is getting used. I remember seeing an MSN Make It episode on a black couple who were also traveling nurses, and the guy owed multiple cars while rarely drove them. Why not test the water first by renting the 150k car for a day or so and see how it feels? Very often the novelty and pride of ownership of a luxury vehicle wears off after a month or two. And the fact that both are traveling nurses and rarely get to use the car is also a concern.

Some additional context: my family bought a really nice Royce Rolls from an auction many years ago but sold it after a year because either we were afraid of driving it and wrecking it, or we were afraid people knew we owned such an expensive car and would steal it. We spent over 6K thirty years ago just to maintain it for a year. So the car was just mostly collecting dust in the garage, and it really didn’t serve any good at the end.

I'm watching this and while I understand why you, Ramit, are confused about how they think about money on a weekly basis. But I also am a contract nurse and I understand why they speak in this way. You only know for sure how much you're going to make for the length of your contract for which you are paid weekly. You literally don't know how much you're going to make on your next contract. You hope that you're going to make a certain amount but you never know. Plus, there's always a possibility of your contract being canceled at anytime. You have to be comfortable with the unknown and what you know for sure is how much you make weekly if that makes sense. I appreciate what you do so much Ramit. I'm halfway thru your book and I'm working on being more conscience about my spending. It's quite literally changed my life ❤

I personally would be living in the house that’s paid for & working on staff instead of paying $5k for rent. The income will drop but so will the fixed costs. Definitely invest more. Thank you both for all of your hard & sacrifice.

I'm just watching this couple now - while filling out our Quicken(!) just wow. I'm glad she revealed the 'real life' of healthcare workers! I'm a counselor - through the last 30+ years- between political news and the pandemic - now I'm working with the grieving left behind - including my own father. It sounds like Ramit doesn't understand travel nursing. The reason they use weekly income is because that's how it's discussed in that field. They ARE competent in talking about the pay in the field. It also fluctuates. How could you possibly know what your ANNUAL income is going to be when your contracts might only last a few months and you don't know how much the next one will be. That's why he's saying his pay is going to change this week. Using annual monthly income is not always an option for people in gig work, seasonal work, or with fluctuating incomes. Its not a lack of competence its a lack of being able to see the future and trying not to plan around money you might not ever earn.
