The fun part of the video is that you literally experienced Indian food prepared in the Sri Lankan style, showcasing the unique blends and flavors of their spices. During colonial times, the British faced a rebellion in 1818, which they managed to suppress after suffering significant losses. Subsequently, they employed various tactics to force the natives to surrender completely to the British Crown. Documented historical events can be found in the archives. When the natives resisted surrendering, the British resorted to destroying their vegetation and livestock. Since you have traveled to Sri Lanka, you may know that all the mountainous tea, rubber, coffee, and vegetable plantations were introduced by the British. After the rebellion, they destroyed the natural herbs and food sources known to the locals, leading to widespread starvation. To further humiliate the natives, the British brought in over 15,000 Malayali laborers from Kerala, followed by Tamil workers for the tea plantations. Even the Muslim population largely originated from Kerala. As a result, only a few remaining people may know exactly what the natives consumed before the colonial era. The locals were forced to surrender and work for a meager plate of rice, dhal (lentils), and dried salted fish. The southern part of the island, once a wet and fertile land, has become a harsh, dry zone due to deforestation and the destruction of natural water flows. Most of what people grow now can be traced back to India, particularly Kerala. The curry powders and mixes used are essentially adapted versions of South Indian masalas. Much of the native vegetation that once thrived in the land has now become extinct due to this destruction. Here are some dishes you might have encountered and their influences: Mutton Rolls: Not authentically Sri Lankan; predominantly influenced by Kerala and China. Vada: Of course, from Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Fish Cutlet: Similar to mutton rolls. Vegetable Roti: Mostly akin to Kerala's vegetable paratha wrap. Chicken Lollipop: A South Indian influence. Hoppers (Appam): Originating from Kerala. Deviled Dishes: Primarily influenced by China and the Indonesian islands. Curry (chicken, pineapple, mango, etc.): From Kerala. Kottu: Mostly from Kerala. Rice is a common staple food across Asia, but Sri Lanka has its unique varieties of rice that you have yet to taste.

As far as I know, kottu originated from east of Sri Lanka . This is according to many reputed chefs and food critiques. And cutlets and rolls are more influenced by the Dutch not by the kerala people

Sri lankan rice is always white rice (keeri samba) and not red rice or chinese fried rice method.. good with more vegetable Curries. If you need more meat curries with least veg curries, then try Ghee/Dunthel white Rice with curry leaves and cloves with more than 1 meat and thin Pineapple rings and mango chutney

It’s totally fine. Even sometimes in Sri Lanka also Sri Lankans eats with fork and spoon. The best and authentic way is to eat with your hands which is correct. However people need to enjoy our food that’s what matters 🎉❤

Come one dude it’s ok to eat with fork and spoon. It’s definitely not the best way(it doesn’t taste the same). But some do use cutlery 😅😅( very rarely) And for the people that don’t understand why people say it tastes better. 😊😊In my opinion,When you normally eat with a spoon or a fork, what your toungue touch first is whatever the material that the cutlery made up of. But when eating with the hand the taste buds directly touches the food so it tastes better.
