Actually Cassia is sold as 'Cinnamon' around the world. But you will think the cassia taste and smell are awful if you can compare with true cinnamon which is Ceylon cinnamon (only from Sri Lanka) Importantly there is a naturally occuring chemical in cassia and cinnamon which is coumarin. It can cause liver damage in sensitive people if consumed in higher amounts. That chemical occurs in very small amounts in ceylon cinnamon and it is safer while it occurs higher in cassia. Cassia cinnamon contains up to 1% coumarin, whereas true cinnamon contains only a trace, about 0.004%. Also, coffee was a main export good before it was destroyed from a disease during colonial era. Thereafter british replaced coffee by tea in hill country.

@kosalamunasinghe6714 it is situated opposite the St. Anthony's catholic church in Kochikade , Kotehena, Colombo 15 I think. First built by Sir Ponnambalam Arunachalam or his father in 1857 and later completed by him, the entire temple is carved out of pure granite according ancient Dravidian and south Indian architecture as was 2500 years ago, without modern building methods. I think it is the only temple in whole of Sri Lanka carved out of pure granite, with exquisite carvings in stone.

Olivier's enthusiasm & knowledge of SL is to be admired. But I believe it was the Portuguese who first brought African slaves to Sri Lanka, though the Dutch continued the practice. Most of the slaves were believed to have been brought from the Portuguese colony of Mozambique & a few of their descendants are still able to speak a form of Portuguese creole.

The bark of the cinnamon shrubs that grow wildly in Sri Lanka is more thinner, crispier and sweeter. When dried it is fragile and breaks easily. It is light orange/tan in color than what is sold in the US and the Western countries as cinnamon which is brown with a thick hard bark. “Cinnamon”sticks sold in Western countries are really not cinnamon but a substitute called cassia Although Sri Lankan cinnamon is sweet, consuming it reduces blood glucose levels and is recommended to be used by diabetics.
