I'm currently a junior cyclist and I avarage about 12 hour training weeks. I did a hundred miler on sunday and monday back to back. Guess who inspired me, L39ION. The amount of work these people put in is insane. Seeing you guys in tulsa tough really made my day.

I briefly met Cory and Justin 6 years ago, I just knew they were on the verge of something special. They inspired me to work for major brands like Specialized and continue my own bike journey. Even as a Latino kid it's hard to find representation in Cycling, what Legion is doing is holding the door open for everyone else who feels disenfranchised in this sport.

This team is a study case. It's remarkable how they have grown and how everybody knows them. Their approach is different, yes they're incredible athletes but their online presence and the way they interact with people set them apart. I've seen them race and took pictures with them after the race and they're super cool and approachable. Corey even asked me if I wanted a bottle, and I got two that day!

I’ve been in cycling since the mid 70’s as a young Hispanic man at 20 years of age. I had to work hard to buy all my equipment. On some occasions I had to withstand ethnic jokes, but to those riders in my club, I just ignored them. For the most part I felt respected. It’s funny, now that I’m an older rider, in my sixties. I find I get disrespected more for my age. It’s a new kind of discrimination. Up till my early 60’s I was still riding a fast group ride (Montrose), I could handle it, and I could hold my own, and hold my line. I don’t know being an older cyclist in a tight, fast, group ride, maybe makes people nervous. I don’t do that ride any longer, it was hard to get back into it after Covid restrictions. To much effort to get back to that level of riding. I just do my own rides. 👍🏻😁

The idea of Crit racing is amazing. My build would fit this style of racing really well. But I started on my bike at age 30+ and I must admit I would not be willing to take the risks that you have to be willing to do to, have any fun in a Crit race.. =)

The only thing that gets you representation in the world of cycling is winning, and winning in Europe PERIOD! Criterium racing is exciting for the participant, but for the fans it can get long winded. Cycling n general is tough for the common sports fan to watch. It’s an expensive sport, with little to no chance for the middle or low income levels to break into in LA. Lived and seen the same pattern for the last 30+ years.

When I came in,my coach happened to be an Italian rider and we became buddies,yet I know that if it was not for him,my Black azz would have been ignored. I got hurt and then went to mountain biking and it was the same thing.Even on charity rides they would see us brown riders and they would come at us,looking at us,then trying to drop us,just because. Then I was riding with some guys in the woods,and the shop mechanic ,also Italian really helped me out and encouraged me. Here in NYC it was the Brookly Team or the Major Taylor Team in NJ..

What legion is doing is pretty amazing! I believe in the team's goals of better representation of minorities into cycling, and doing these changes has to start somewhere locally and inside your comfort zone and that is good. However, to reach the true essence of this goal, in due time one way or another and inevitably, one must penetrate outside of their comfort zone(crit racing, local racing) and step out into pro tour level or maybe world tour level racing. If it isn't legion that would do this, i am sure some other group/person of color was inspired by Legion's beginnings and would dare to dream that way. It is just way more difficult to be seen on road racing since logistically, it would need world tour level of media coverage equipment such as helicopters, and crit racing is set up in a way more beneficial for spectators and that in its own right is good for the sport. Been a fan since starting my cycling journey this pandemic! =)
