“We are living in a culture entirely hypnotized by the illusion of time, in which the so-called present moment is felt as nothing but an infinitesimal hairline between an all-powerfully causative past and an absorbingly important future. We have no present. Our consciousness is almost completely preoccupied with memory and expectation. We do not realize that there never was, is, nor will be any other experience than present experience. We are therefore out of touch with reality. We confuse the world as talked about, described, and measured with the world which actually is. We are sick with a fascination for the useful tools of names and numbers, of symbols, signs, conceptions and ideas.” ― Alan Watts

I sorely need this quotation in front of my face every day, several times a day, so I am replying for the sole purpose of finding this comment later on. I am on my way into sleep, so i will find a way to put it in front of me outside of this context when I wake. For the inquiring mind: My "present" is an awful, compounded mess that has resulted from many wrongs in the past - distant and very recent, and in many ways currently ongoing - and I'm struggling to mend it all, which I must do before I can dive into the amazing things lined up in my near and long-reaching futures. Much as I try to keep my focus on "I can better this one thing, in this one moment," I'm so overtaken by the ongoing wrongs and tower of things I have to fix on my own, against constant resistance from things outside my control, that the promise of a fantastic change in the near future feels more like a looming deadline and the pressure is paralyzing. But. If I can fill my head with these videos and quotations and comments, more than just as I'm unwinding to sleep, my stubborn brain could hopefully - no, will surely - be able to rearrange its wires to function in the present moment. Because at the very core of it, the present is all I am working with or against, and if I can do what must be done regardless of others' effects or what lies ahead, then I bet I'll get to that hopeful future much more quickly, efficiently, and painlessly than I have so far. So, I am grateful for your comment here. I may have heard it in another video, or i at least will I'm sure, but I process better visually (i originally came to the comments to see whether anybody mentioned more videos that include footage of Alan Watts for that reason) so taking it in through my eyeballs is hugely helpful. Thank you.

I started listening to Alan Watts 5 years ago and have been listening to his lectures weekly. Today I have less problems and feel that life is easier, and I flow more naturally through the world. I feel this awesome power within me, and wherever I go, people sense that power. When I wake in the morning, I’m not afraid to die that evening. I understand it all and it is good. My way of life is simple: I work, I eat, I rest. I am at peace and it is good. The Tao flows both to the left and the right. It clothes and nourishes all things but does not lord it over them. When merits are accomplished it lays no claim to them. ~Lao Tzu

This is incredibly true and real, I was telling a friend today the exact thing, I told her " take one day at the time" and essentially is what this gentleman is saying, we worry about tomorrow, and we neglect to enjoy and take in all the beautiful things that are passing us by each day, like the love for someone, and generally take in the beauty of life. What an eye opener this is.

“Your time should not be without any structure, such that you occupy yourself arbitrarily with whatever comes along. Rather, you must take account of yourself and order your worship during the day and the night, assigning to each period of time an activity that must not be neglected nor replaced by another activity. By this ordering of time, the blessing in time will show itself. A person who leaves himself without a plan as animals do, not knowing what he is to do an any given moment, will spend most of his time fruitlessly. Your time is your life, and your life is your capital: by it you make your trade, and by it you will reach the eternal bounties in the proximity of Allah. Every single breath of yours is a priceless jewel, because it is irreplaceable; once it is gone, there is no return for it. So do not be like fools who rejoice each day as their wealth increases while their lives decrease. What good is there in wealth that increases while one’s lifespan decreases? Do not rejoice except in an increase of knowledge or an increase of good works. Truly they are your two friends who will accompany you in your grave, when your spouse, your wealth, your children, and your friends will remain behind.” - Imam al-Ghazali

We can only live in the present. It’s not possible to live in the past or future. If you can make your brain understand to let go of the past, great. But how will your heart ever let go? So then you could say their is no present their is only the past. I think when you loose a child, you loose your life. Because you will never leave them. So now your stuck in a reality that only exist for you. But if your blessed enough to have more children then you must leave the past and live. You may live for them if you can’t for yourself. Sometimes the subconscious mind may can get stuck, and because you're so in the present it doesn't fulfill its objectives or partially does because it's in the present too much or used to the past. That has been my experience because iv been fully in the now but objectives were not met or partially fulfilled. Or when they finally began to be met they eventually fizzled. So yeah. It was weird.
