Mike, I retired as a public safety bomb technician and you have no idea how many times we were called to a location where someone found a spent Non-El connector like you found. We always educated the caller about what they were, just as you did Melissa. We'd thanked them for calling us, we'd rather make 1000 runs for spent explosives than miss one and someone gets hurt. Between those and road flares being confused for dynamite we stayed busy.

Hey Mike and Melissa, how are you doing? I haven't read all of the comments, so someone may have already suggested this to you, so forgive me if they have. Go to KZbin and do a search on "how to make baskets from pine needles", and you will find quite a few tutorials on making baskets from the pine needles. I think Melissa would love doing this as a side project on a cold winter day. Keep up the good work with the videos, love them.

Hi from eastern Australia. The thought about bush fires had crossed my mind too. I don't think we have to worry at the moment as we are experiencing some of the heaviest rainfalls since records started being kept. The whole eastern states are experiencing major flooding with some towns almost wiped out. Some places received their annual rainfall and more in just a couple of days and there is much more to come. Keep up the great videos guys.

My wife and I grew up in the woods of rural Pennsylvania so I understand completely why you want to live in the woods! We now live in Colorado and our first experience with western wildfire was the Black Forest fire. I can’t begin to describe the feelings of utter terror and helplessness watching a wall of fire coming towards everything you have. Luckily our house survived. I almost spilled my coffee when Melissa said you have other ways of destroying things and “his” pic flashed on the screen! Our families are still in PA and we worry about them. I wish you guys lots of luck, I think you’re going to need it!

You folks picked a great location for the cabin. My place here in SC is also in a pine forest. Not as pretty as the red and white pine but I still like them. Key to good fire control is keeping the needles and your woods cleaned up and do not be afraid tp perform good controlled burns. I do controlled burns at least once a year in the pine stands. Once the fuel amount is low you will not get ragging fires. Pine needles do make a great water dam so be sure to keep your roof and gutters cleaned out!!

Super video as usual! I grew up in northern New Mexico (in a valley surrounded by mountains) and Colorado where we spent the greater part of our free time in the great mountains of Colorado fishing, hunting, hiking, and camping. Until these decade or so I never heard of forest fires, and this includes the valley in NM which this year was devastated with fires, family and friends were evacuated twice. Fantastic blip in the video so cool and so true.

I agree about living in the east. I drive truck and get to see other parts of the country, I don't run coast to coast but I have been out west and every part of the country has its own unique characteristics but I believe we live in one of the most beautiful parts of the country. I don't live too far from you , I'm up here in western NY just a few miles from the Pa. state line. Yep we get snow in the winter but thats about the worst of it , like you said a rare tornado some leftover rain from a hurricane other than that is just a great place to live. I'm getting a little older now but still love all of the seasons and I don't think I could ever give that up. Keep enjoying your journey I enjoy watching, your good people and have a great family

Have you guys talked about water/electricity supply? We are very similar in pines with some oaks. Closest power is over a mile through very rough mountain terrain. We are going solar with battery banks. Possibly catch tanks off gutters and secondary storage so we can haul water in when necessary. Septic will be simple 55gal drum set up due to 90% rock subsurface. But lots of elevation to ensure proper drainage into septic

You nailed it at 26 min. I have a home in PA and a cabin in dairy country Ohio in the middle of a Norwegian pine forest for the last 6 yrs. Pro tip, not put gutters on your cabin. You will do nothing but constantly clean them out. Use Rain Chains. Your driveway will always be covered with needles. Use RM43 to keep the driveway weeds under control. My cabin was a two part Amish built, 680 Sq ft with 2 lofts. PLENTY of room. When you run your electric run it underground. So exciting to see your adventure!

I love it all. My only change would be, again, my change, not necessarily your change, have remints of the driveway branch and cabin location prep work hauled away with the exception of collection of medium to small log poles. The Wolfridge could easily be brought down to split and save that firewood for next winter. You and Melisa could through those logs like an ice-cold coke on a hot summer's day! Otherwise, it is just an amazing idea for a nice get away spot. I'm certain all of you will find the place extremely enjoyable. I'm considering looking in the same area for my own home away from home. I do love fishing and the area where you are building is surrounded by lots of lakes, and lots of spring and summer fresh air and temps. Thats what I want, and need. Thanks guys, great video!!

I understand that the slam is to loosen materials but it is also very hard on the tailgate latches we’ve had latches get broken and bent by doing this
@davidmorse8432
@davidmorse8432 Жыл бұрын
@@justinauman5438 Yes, that can happen with worn latches and top hinge pins because the lower pin does not properly line up with the saddle of the latch. As the top hinge wears, the bottom pin will hit the bottom of the saddle and can bend or break it off. Proper adjustment will prevent that and make sure the tailgate closes the way it should. You can correct this misalignment by installing some bushings in the top hinge holes and welding them in place. Use short pieces of pipe nipples for the bushings or preferably something more appropriate if you can find them. Try to keep the top hinge pin lubricated by squirting some used engine oil on them regularly. Mine even have a grease fitting on them. Another alternative is to cut the top ears of the tailgate off and weld on some new ones in the proper location. I slam my tailgate to knock out material but the sound also tells me if I need to get out and scrape my bed down.

Mike had you thought about putting geo textile down first where the cabin is going? It should prevent weeds from growing up under and around the cabin. The site is looking good. Cannot wait to see the cabin installed. 👍

Pine needle tea. Use only the fresh and brand new needles. Do NOT boil them, but steep them in hot water, add a little bit of honey or sugar or your choice of sweetener. That's it. We make it over hot coals next to a fire when hammock camping.

WV does have wildfires from time to times. I'd love to have a place in the woods, but would like an acre or 2 of open area with mostly woods behind. The reason you want woods, is maintenance, not mowing 20-40 acres of open areas. Basically self sustaining. Plus hunting in woods is the best.

I was thinking that maybe Kubota would make you a good deal on the tractor you've been using and you'd have one for PA and one for WV. As for the saw mill you have now, that would make a good mill for WV too. Hmmm then you'd have to get another skid loader for there. It would save on having to haul what you need back and forth. But you'd have to build a building to store them in for when you aren't there.

It'll be interesting to see what you do with a septic system and well. My concern would be pine needles clogging gutters, might be prudent to invest in Leaf Guard Gutter system more $$$ upfront but piece of mind down the road no clogs

Funny to see Melissa 'play Archie' picking up all the sticks 😉 yes here in Northern Europe (especially Scandinavia) they drink much pine needle tea, just fresh pine needles wich are slightly crushed and brew a pot of tea out of it, pour it through a sive to serve .... pine needles contain a lot of vitamin C.
