After playing Monster Hunter on the PS2, I can wholeheartedly agree with Cotton. The hip-check isn't that bad, it's no different to any other monster that does the hip-check, it's just done frequently, and enough people are hit by it that when someone says 'that hip-check tho' it spreads like a wildfire, similarly to Jho eating his tail. The TAIL ATTACK, however? Fuck that move.

Honestly 3U Plesioth was the best, he was an agile and speedy Shark Dragon as intended from the beginning ( at least from the stylish design) and not an anorexic Gravios rip-off with the same fatty hit-boxes. At least that's what i felt when i fought him underwater back in the day. From what we've seen in Iceborne with Yian Garuga, i will never doubt the capacity of Capcom to rework and building hype for a very hated monster. I can't wait for what they're thinking with Plesioth

The hip check used to take over half of your health, and had a hit box that started on the other side of the attack, it basically didn't have a safe spot, best you could do was block it. It was it's most spammed attack, which adds to everyone's plesioth PTSD. Even going gunner was annoying due to the fact that if it got to you it oneshot you. 4 Ultimate definitely treated plesioth the best.

I never played MH1 but I know that both the tailswipe and the hipcheck (or more accuratly hyperspace tackle) were insufferable in freedom unite. And if I remember correctly you both agreed that he just by himself without taking controls into concideration was way worse in freedom unite than he was in 1. The thing about the hipcheck though and why it's remembered so well instead of the tail swipe if I had to guess was that for one its hitbox used to be way worse (as in you stand in a direction that is not the visual line of fire and you still get hit (or as past josh puts it the hipcheck hits all and is all)) and for another every single other Monster of the typical flying wyvern skeleton has the same hitbox problem with the tail swipe which probably was just accepted as normal at some point. Any freedom unite veterans (or anyone who played it recently) feel free to correct me as it has been some time since I last played it but I am pretty sure every monster that has the standard tail swipe attack, be it a rathalos, Diablos or whatever had that same issue. But because thats just the way things were back then it never came to mind. Then beginning from third gen the animation for the tail swipe was tweaked a bit so that the visual hitbox aligns a bit more with the actual hitbox by lowering the tail during the swipe. However since plesioth is just such a massive unit it might be that due to some oversight in programming his tailswipe hitbox became more noticeable. It didn't quite overlap with his visual hitbox due to his massive size. Anyway that's my take on it and if you made it this far thanks for listening to my Ted Talk.
