I remember being pretty amazed when hearing that Washingtons basketball team narrowed it's 3,000ish submitted name choices collected from a pool of 500,000ish fans to the five decidedly best of the bunch being the Sea Dogs, the Express, the Stallions, the Dragons, and of course the Wizards. Over 500,000 various thought processes coming up with over 3,000 different team name ideas... and those five were the absolute best. Clearly Washingtons pool of sports franchise name submitters experienced minimal (if any) turnover. My guess was the polling took place in Dallas.

I was hoping for the “Washington Natives”. The logo picture is a strong Native American that was proposed by Walter Wetzel, a former Blackfeet tribal chairman and past president of the National Congress of American Indians. It was modeled after the likeness on the Buffalo nickel and is respectful (not like Chief Wahoo for Cleveland). Anyone from the DC area can relate to the tourist season here as well as the politicians who temporarily make a home here. We are Native to the area and we give homage to our proud Native American population.

The Washington Redskins was a name that paid tribute and respect to the Native American. Just like the KC Chiefs, Florida Seminole, and on and on. You name a team after something or someone that is respected, honored, and instills fear in your opponent. Anyone who says different is an idiot. Redskin meant proof of Indian kill. It was a confirmation of a bounty on natives, often signified by a clump of hair or segment of skin taken off a native corpse. There’s nothing honorable in that name. Native activists have been trying to get the name changed for decades. I’m not a terribly huge fan of “Commanders” but to keep the old name would’ve been ridiculous. If we truly wanted to respect Native Americans we wouldn’t build oil pipelines through their reservations or bulldoze their sacred grounds to build Trump’s wall. I genuinely feel betrayed by this team. I grew up in the DMV throughout the 90's with my entire family. We were all Redskins fans. We all live in different states now some in Texas, Colorado, and I'm in California. We all remained Redskins fans over 20 years after leaving the DMV. We would have family reunions at road games because so much of what the Redskins were especially the name and logo were representations and symbols of where we are from and who we were as a family when we all lived in the DMV. Since dropping the name and logo, my family stopped caring as much. They think its not the team they recognize anymore. I was really hoping for a name that embodies the 90 years of the franchise or atleast similar sounding that wouldnt be too far from Redskins such as Redwolves or Hogs....I think this is the nail in the coffin and now my family has no team we can all equally love and talk about. I'm devastated. They claimed the fans would choose a name and that all our memories are reflected in the new name but it had done the opposite for my family. We feel forgotten. Its not like they are still our local team and we can root for any name. sad sad sad
