They recorded this following the American Music Awards, 1985, when the the artists were all in town for the awards. Quincy Jones recorded the instrumental tracks beforehand, and it took twelve hours to record. They worked through the night. I loved that Quincy Jones told them to check their egos at the door. The single raised $60 million at the time.

Ego's checked at the door, except let's showcase a during or future pedophile!?! Yupp They did work thru the night, Lionel's thumb up meant this is the take we're going with, probably around 6am. Boy they were troopers, skipping the after parties and pulling an all nighter.

The great Quincy Jones orchestrated this recording session. He had a sign over the door that read "Check Your Egos At The Door". And they all did! They let the master of ceremonies Quincy Jones run the show! They all knew that this wasn't about them. This was about helping the people in Africa. When you have Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson, and Lionel Richie ask if you would like to be a part of something special, how in the heck do you say NO to that? Most of them didn't! How proud would anyone be to have been a part of that? Thank goodness we can continue to share this with later generations. People need to see that coming together for a united cause is POSSIBLE! Loved your reactions!

Guys, besides the fact that all these stars gave their time, effort, and money for a single and humanitarian cause; that is amazing. Last thing I found amazing was how this gathering was kept secret and the security must have been out of this world. Great song and great people that pulled together to help their fellow man.

The music video was made in the night of January 28, 1985 on A&M Recording Studios (now renamed as Jim Henson Studios) and the single was released on March same year distributed by Columbia Records (now owned by Sony Music Entertainment) it is considered as a best charity single ever made, 46 singers united in one voice saying WE ARE THE WORLD!! With that song they founded USA For Africa (United Support of Artists For Africa). The reason for making this song was in order to fight against famine in Ethiopia. USA For Africa raised over $100 million over 30 years reported as on 2015. Keep making great reactions!

Yep Dan Aykroyd was in this. He was in the Blues Brothers and they sold a few million records. He also played a musician in a persona, he walked into an office in LA, he and his father were interviewing business managers at the time, and they accidentally went to a talent manager and not a money manager. The manager said “ so long as your here, would you like to come and join this We Are The World thing we’re doing?” Dan said sure. So that is how and why Dan is in this video right now

Actually, they did a new We Are the World with 80 different artists to benefit earthquake victims in Haiti. There were some parts that some didn't like, but there were several spectacular singers involved, and they even included a new rap section with several legendary rappers. I'm not really a huge rap fan, but I still found it very inspiring! Barbra Streisand, Josh Grobin, Celine Dion, Tony Bennett, Janet Jackson, Nicole Scherzinger, Jennifer Hudson, Gladys Knight, Carlos Santana, Enrique Iglesias, Natalie Cole, the Jonas Brothers, Myley Cyrus, and Justin Beiber took part, among many others. They even included Wyclef Jean, a Haitian artist. They also released a Spanish language version by a group of Latino superstars like Gloria Estefan, Carlos Santana, Jose Feliciano, Ricky Martin, and David Archuleta! Both are worth checking out!

"We are the world" was a truly global event in 1985, I remember it well. Ethiopia was afflicted by famine and it was necessary to intervene, so the USA for Africa did a great work for good. And then to see all those great artists come together and sing a song like this, which has become immortal and eternal, was truly extraordinary. In that same year, an Italian hit was born, "Ti Sento" by Matia Bazar with Antonella Ruggiero. I don't know if you know them and yes I know, the Italo Disco pop music genre would have nothing to do with the reaction to "We are the world" but it would be so nice to see you react to this song, of which there is also the version in English "I feel you" and in Spanish "Te siento". Thank you and good work to you.

Oh, I almost forgot ... Quincy Jones was the conductor.
