Dude you have no idea what autotune is. EVERY SINGER needs autotune. It has nothing to do with sounding robotic or whatever but it stabilizes your voice and makes it a recording voice by smoothen it out.. and yes even these legends had autotune on their mics

Why Whitney Houston wasn't there: "We Are the World" was released in January of 1985. Whitney Houston's first album was released the following month, but didn't catch on until later in the year. When this was recorded, she wasn't yet a star, so wouldn't have been invited to participate. But her cousin Dionne Warwick, a star since the 1960s, was there.

Written by MJ and Lionel, organized and conducted by Quincy. Whitney's aunt, the great Dionne Warwick made an appearance just before Willie. I don't think you recognized Diana Ross, Bob Dylan, Kenny Rogers, Paul Simon and Steve Perry, ALL ICONS. Probably over 100 #1 Hit songs in that room and over 500 top 100 songs. When this came out on MTV in 1985 MTV was young and only played music videos 24/7 and they promoted this "event" for days prior to it's debut. Then it played every hour on the hour for weeks to raise money for the people starving to death in Africa.

It was actually put together by the legendary Harry Belafonte ( you can see him in the video above a 8:05 in the back row. He was so humble he stayed in the back and didn't want a solo). He had the idea for this song as a fund raiser following the British Live Aid concert the year before. He contacted Lionel Ritchie and Kenny Rogers to get the ball rolling. Quincy Jones was then recruited to produce it. It was Quincy Jones who contacted Michael Jackson about participating, and Michael told him was only interested if he could be included in the songwriting credits. Because Thriller was blowing up at the time (Quincy produced Thriller), everyone said :Sure, why not, whatever". It was a shrewd marking move by Jackson. but it had very little to do with his altruism. Lionel had written most of the song before Michael was even contacted. They all knew that having Michael involved would be a huge PR win, so they let him re-write a few of the verse lyrics and take all the credit for what was mostly Harry and Lionel's work.

I was around 14 when this magic happened. This song was played all over the World. I remember the day of 28th of March of the 1996, like over 6.000 radio stations all over the planet, played the song simultaneously at 10:15am. I remember in schools (Italy) when they told us that the song would have been played all over the planet and it is been so... It has been the biggest moment of unification that I ever lived in my life. Something that is just utopia, a dream, at the day of today... I'm so glad that I'm coming from that era. Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie materialized a masterpiece that night in L.A. This song has been made for charity. All those superstars went for free to spend the night in a studio to record the song. Some of them arrived there straight from the Americans awards etc .. They all left just when the job was done in the morning. No financial compensation for that long amazing job that they did. A support to Africa, that's it. There is a fantastic documentary (presented by Jane Fonda) that shows that magical night. Whoever is attracted by this song and wants to know more, I suggest to watch that documentary.

FYI, this song was recorded in March 1985. Whitney's 1st album/cd came out in early in Feb 1985, she wasn't quite the superstar that we all remember. Everyone of these artists were the greatest in the 60s , 70s and early 80s.

A lot of heavy metal artists got together to make their own song like this after this one came out. Y'all should check it out. It's not as good as this one, but it's not bad either. Hear N Aid - "We're Stars"

You won't ever see singers that legendary again. Especially in the same room for a good cause.

Love seeing your reactions to each artist especially when you consider how many you recognize because of your channel. Great song, great charity effort with almost every cent going to food, tragic conclusion. A shame we don't have the talent today to make something like this or a Michael Jackson to pull them all together

i wish it was still the 80s. best decade ever for music and lots of other reasons

A couple artists on this track that I think you haven't reacted to them yet, that I think you would enjoy reacting to, Harry Belafonte and The Pointer Sisters.

It still cracks me up that when they do the shots of the whole choir, it's all these legendary singers....and Dan Akroyd. :P

I was 16 years old when this song came out and was in the middle of my teenage years listening to all these artists. This song was iconic then and is just plain legendary now.

Check out another great song about social change called “Ain’t Gonna Play Sun City”. About Apartheid in South Africa and musicians who were boycotting at the time. And of course Band Aid’s Do They Know It’s Christmas….

They should also check the Metal bands collaboration as "Hear'N'Aid" with their song "We're Stars"

The part where Bruce and Stevie have their mash up was added later..This was written by Quincy Jones and he felt something needed to be added so Bruce and Stevie were closest to the studio and went back.. Stevie changed his shirt... This was recorded after an awards show and all the stars stayed up all night to record it... I was 15 when this was released and ya it was very popular.

I was 7 years old when this song was released. My mom blasted through the house everyday until super bowl Sunday. The Bears were in it that year and we're from Chicago. This was the beat year of my childhood. So you can imagine how wonderfully nostalgic it makes me.

This was recorded in 1985…pre-Whitney. Otherwise, no doubt she’d be there! You should watch the remake with more current artists for Haiti and compare. Nothing beats the original, but they definitely put their own spin on it :)

Whitney Houston was signed in 1983 by Clive Davis. She was not yet famous as she would turn out to be "a legend". Her first album hadn't been released. No one knows if she had been asked and had pryer commitments. We are the World was suddenly thrown together in a matter of days in response of USA for Africa. Actor Harry Belefonte' saw a British version of a record fundraiser and approached Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie. That's when they planned to record the song the night of the AMA'S (down the street from the recording studio) to guarantee the artist would be available. The rest is history!

This performance & production/editing shows the musical power of the group as a whole chorus and, in each solo line, the singer performs it in his or her unique way. It's beautiful. So many huge talents in one room. People were humble -- some big names didn't get solos, but wanted to be in the chorus anyway. "Leave your ego at the door" was the motto.

Everyone have their own authentic voices. Masters of their craft. Quincy Jones told everyone to leave their egos at the door. This was after a award show, that is why so many great artists in one place. Icon song.
