@@joshuaphilips6158 I feel your comment is over-harsh. Regardless of actual patient numbers this year, hospital staff have had to work in an unprecedented way, which has been more stressful than usual. For example, wearing protective gear for 8-hour shifts without being able to go to the toilet because it's too difficult to take the protective gear on and off. Hospital staff have also been on the frontline of this virus on a daily basis, with plenty of staff coming down sick with Covid and some even dying. @taralynnhoffmann58314 жыл бұрын
There is no "greater good". Because, who decides what the greater good is? The government. So the greater good just becomes whatever is good for the government. (Old and sick) people are dying of covid but far more (young and healthy) people will die of the government measures. Remember in Korea they didnt lock down for the "first wave" and won't have the same economic implications. Society is complex. It is an ensemble of individuals , each with their individual needs. What is necessary for one persons life may be deadly to another and vice versa. There is no greater good. Eliminating risk for covid will just be a death sentence to our entire society. When you people succeed in burning everything down, you will realize this but it will be too late.

The principle idea behind the people who are reluctant is that governments shouldn't be forcing people to do such things. Culture enforcement is far more effective than a govt telling citizens to do something. I'm very much an advocate for wearing masks and I realize its social effectiveness, but as soon as governments start mandating certain things like masks regardless of good intentions, people can feel that it's a slippery slope to allow governments to take such authoritarian measures. Again I'm very much for masks, but I don't think Dr. Kim is taking in account social relations the west has with their governments.
@rogerstarkey53904 жыл бұрын
@@Swier3D The Uk Government didn't "mandate" mask wearing, or very much of anything early in the crisis. During that time, about 10% of us were wearing masks. The "slippery slope" was lack of reaction, realisation, action, by "citizens" who seemingly took the view "If the Government isn't saying it's serious, then it's not serious". "citizens" collectively behave like children, or "Sheep". If not told what to do, they WILL as a collective wander aimlessly, even to the point of ridiculing those outliers who DO take their own decisions (I watched it happen). The problem in the UK, and it seems other countries, was (Is) that those in power were in fact "Sheep" themselves, not of sufficient calibre to actually do their job, for fear of that ridicule.......... and here we are......
@Swier3D4 жыл бұрын
@@rogerstarkey5390 To be clear I never said that any particular government has enforced anything as such, but I was just stating the fears of the people. I think that we might just have a fundemental disagreement on the purpose of governement, and I think the flaw in your logic is that governements are nothing more than elected citizens, ideally, who are educated on good governing and good policy making, but at the end of the day are still people with flaws and all, which is why I said 'cultural enforcement' is much more effective in this case. Cultural enforcement is exactly why Korea and other Asian countries wear masks almost 100% of the time because culturally the people value each other's health. It would wise of most western countries to adopt such a way of living starting in our local communities first rather than just listen to what the governement suggests or mandates. People were wearing masks here in Korea long before the governement advised to do so.

@Matt Guitar Restrict your breathing? Let's take a look at this research. Overall, there were no concerning declines in blood oxygen saturation by wearing a mask. So researchers at McMaster University in Canada set out to test the notion out: They gave 25 adults (average age: 76.5 years) portable pulse oximeters to measure their blood oxygen levels while wearing a face mask, as well as before and after. The investigators found no concerning signs of hypoxia, or reduced blood oxygen. Of course, "this supports what we already knew," said Dr. Aaron Glatt, an infectious disease specialist who was not involved in the study. "There's no decrease in oxygen from wearing a mask." Some people may feel uncomfortable wearing a mask, noted Glatt, a spokesman for the Infectious Diseases Society of America. But that's no excuse not to do it, he said. "I look at masks like seat belts," Glatt said. "They're not necessarily comfortable, but they protect you." For the study, Dr. Noel Chan's team outfitted each participant with three-layered, disposable, nonmedical face masks. Volunteers wore them during their normal daily routine, or at rest, and used the pulse oximeter to track their oxygen levels for an hour before wearing the mask, while wearing it for an hour and for an hour afterward. Overall, there were no concerning declines in blood oxygen saturation. On average, oxygen saturation was 96.1% before participants masked up, and then slightly higher while they wore masks and afterward - at 96.5% and 96.3%, respectively. The findings were published online as a research letter in the Oct. 30 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

How amazing is his analysis of the economic and political issues, notably when he talks about the Western old values of freedom and democracy. Many people in my country still do not practice social distancing and it's just frustrating because the situation here is not getting better. Some of us would be standing in line with social distancing to enter the grocery store, for example, but passersby would just walk through the gaps between those in line - thus defeating the purpose of social distancing. I am a final year student in university and I had to take my entire semester online which was extremely stressful to all of us and it definitely took a toll on the students well-being. Many of my university students often share and actively raise awareness on this so that more people would cooperate. I hope things get better in 2021 :( STAY SAFE AND TAKE CARE EVERYONE 💛

there seems to be two things i can take home from this entire pandemic so far: 1. the spread of the virus in some countries is mostly due to the sheer ignorance of many people refusing to do things like wear masks and be vigilant. some countries to a greater degree than others. 2. some governments (again, not all, but some) are inefficient in communicating honestly and effectively with their people and don't act fast enough

you are lucky bcs 1. your borders are closed 2. you have summer while the US and Europe have winter 3. your politicians communicate the problem well and have more trust then US-Europe politicians - thAT IS WHY there are protesters, antimaskers, antivaxers, and other idiots believing any kind of conspiracy theories, sometimes I think that it would do so much good to just shut down all social media like IG,FB, etc... for few weeks so that ppl would be able to come to their sense and see the reality and stop believing in conspiracy theories
