Hold onto the work until it is paid, their customers will soon kick up a fuss when they are having to wait for the head/ block or whatever to be returned. They will soon lose their customers if they are having to wait weeks to get their cars back. If you have given them notification that it is pay on collection you are entitled to hold onto whatever until it is paid. No main Dealer is unable to do a BACS transfer. It is all down to cash flow , bad cash flow is either greed or bad financial management.

I used to have a small garage, just two of us, and a local main agent took me to court over an outstanding account that was for less than 50% of what they owed me!! Judge very luckily saw my point and made them pay all costs and pay me within 24 hours! This main agent went bust about a year later. Every main agent has access to a method of payment to instantly pay over the phone, so I discovered many months later.

Main dealers can make a bank transfer that will be on your account within hours. They can drop off stuff, you can invoice them and once the money is in your account, they can pick up their stuff the same or next business day. They have book keepers, they have internet banking. Just invoice them once, email or regular paper and have them figure out how to get money to you. As long as your bill isn't paid, they don't get their stuff back. Once the guy picking it up is coming back empty handed, they will figure it out in their own organization how to deal with it. If that means they have a mechanic drive over, not be able to pick up stuff, drive back and stomp into the office to find a bookkeeper that can book the money, they will realize that they are only making it harder for themselves. They will either find another shop that will deal with their crap or clean up their act. You emailing 5 people is them making it hard for you and cheap and easy for themselves. Don't do it anymore and be strict, you will either get it your way or they will no longer bother you with their head surfacing jobs.

Sputtered bearings is referring to the process used to put the coatings on. Sputtering is a process where the coating material is evaporated in a vacuum chamber and static electricity attracts the coating material to the bearing surface. This means that they can have a fine control over how much material is deposited and this way they have a very precise thickness and even distribution, compared to classic processes like spraying molten metal onto the bearing carrier. Because of the high precision of sputtering materials can be used that will not be suitable for other processes and because of the precision, there is a better control over the thickness of the oil film, meaning that the chances of losing oil film under high load are minimized.

When I was in the game I did a lot of work for a large local taxi company all of which was on monthly account. Slowly they got later and later each month settling things so one month became two, then three, then bang they go bust! A few days later I hear they've started up again under another name and were using another local garage. Told the garage what had happened to me but unfortunately for them they didn't heed my warning. Big mistake!!!!

Ref:- main dealer payments. An option for you to consider is, when you have finished a job, you should invoice on completion and send it, with a caveat, collection of goods will be released when the invoice is PAID IN FULL, If the dealer wants there unit back to finish there work in process, they will have to pay you before they collect the goods. DONT BE SOFT, You are holding the winning hand whilst you have the engine on your premises. Good luck, I do enjoy your channel. Regards Alan

Credit unless arranged prior isn't required to be given, as a business you can hold the item that you have worked on until paid for in full by way of a lien. So if a main dealer gets work done on an engine, it doesn't leave your premises till paid for and in your bank account. Any inconvenience "downstream" for the dealer is their problem!!!

You did the right thing ditching credit accounts. In my time in the trade I witnessed no end of honourable people lose their businesses because they allowed one client to build up a significant debt who then went bust, usually dragging several others under with them. I worked for mostly main dealers and they always have the means to pay cash when they have to; saying they can't is just an excuse to delay payment for six weeks or the miserable cow in accounts can't be arsed (most often).

Surely bank transfer is the way to go. No fees for handling, immediate payment, and with a reference number to show proof of transaction. Just provide your BSB number and say pay me now. There is no excuse for non payment, only if there is a deliberate attempt to delay giving you the money. It is all online, and in a lot of cases far less stressful than a credit card.

Our engine builder in the USA used to require 50% up front BEFORE he would start on our work. Sometimes this 50% payment was over US$30,000 per engine. If we didn't pay, the builder would just start on the next race team's engine, and our engine did not get started. The other 50% had to be paid before he released the engine, AND we had to collect it, as he did not do deliveries.

Late payment is part of the business plan. It’s an awful lot cheaper than running an overdraft at the bank. As interest rates have increased debtor days have increased. It isn’t only about the late payment either. When you give credit you always take the risk that the customer won’t or can’t ever pay. As some others have said, BACS is quick and easy and they will be paying you via that route anyway. When you quote just write on the paperwork that goods will not be released until payment is made and cleared (that bit is important). You’re a machine shop, not a bank but they see you as both.

About 30 years ago oil companies went from a 90 day pay on accounts to 120 days. So you are a small contractor doing work for them, but have to wait 120 days to get paid. With interest rates low this is not the big problem but when interest rates go up on the money you have outstanding, this adds up. Your company may be waiting for 200.000 to 300.000$ for a months work. Meanwhile the oil company is sitting on money owed to maybe 40 contractors, which adds up to interest in their accounts on millions owed. When you deal with multi billion dollar corporations you kind of bite the bullet while muttering under your breath. Dealers, same thing. They are coniving thieves IMHO. Being a journeyman mechanic I have worked for enough of them.

I deal with a lot of business nationwide ( we supply printer cartridges)of all sizes and have yet to find any company that does not have a debit card for payment if necessary. Some large company's seem to regard smaller business as a free banking facility, i took the decision to treat everyone exactly the same. Payment up front with order, or i do not deal with them. It is i very easy to be worth a fortune on paper, but if you never get paid/have to fight to get paid it is pointless. We all do things our own way. But all business large or small need to be paid, and should be. You cannot walk out of a supermarket with a trolley full and say you will pay in due course. Have a good day.

Any work taken on should be done with clear statement of terms and conditions to the customer. 1. Payment in full before the release of the goods to the customer within an agreed period of time after the work is completed. 2. Failure to pay after that date, you have the right to sell the goods to recover your costs.

As a business owner if I was not maintaining any credit accounts doe clients it would be a non negotiable. Pay on collection or leave it there. If you must use a credit account and your willing to allow the dealers to hold a credit account keep a strict term of 7 days from date of invoice and then chase up with them through your local legal process of demanding payment prior to action if anything is outstanding. Sure they may get off side however they do not respect you or your business if they are treating you this way with an unknown payment schedule.

Lee, get your main dealer T&C's sorted out and make sure payment terms are robust. By that I mean you include the right to charge interest for late payment. Most organisations will operate a number of payment terms e.g. 30, 60 days etc. but if you set and agree the terms their system should reflect your agreement. You're still reliant on their people processing invoices correctly but I'll bet they sort themselves out when interest is accruing.

Hi Lee Great video as always. There were three main types of rockers on the A series engines. the early 875cc, 998cc & 1098cc ones had Press Steel rockers, but as the performance was up'd there was a tendancy for the tappet end of the rocker to shear off. So the upgrade was the Sintered Steel type, which look like the ones you have fitted on that cylinder head. The third tye were Roller Rockers, which had a roller bearing fitted in the tappet end. I think some of the Cooper works engines had them fitted and there were the "got to" upgrade for those trying to push the limits of the engine. Back in the day Dave Vizards "How to modify your Mini" was required reading for those tinkering with A series engines. Ahh.. Seeing those engines is taking me back to my teens in the mid-70's when as a kid I used to rebuild A series engines in my bedroom. Once built-up though is was always a pain getting them down the stairs! 🤣🤣 Simple solution for main dealers.... Pro-Forma invoicing. In it simplest form it works like this. You quote them. Once agreed, you send them the invoice before you start the work. They pay. You complete the work. Keep up the good work.👌👍

Many years ago I worked for a company that didn't trust its managers so wouldn't give us a card to make payments. Most of the time it wasn't a problem as we had accounts with all our regular suppliers and used petty cash for little things we would pick up from local shops. On the rare occasion we had to get something bigger without an account we could organise sufficient funds into petty cash. Yes it was hard work getting accounts to authorise but that was our problem not the suppliers.

Dealers are slow to pay because you are dealing with an accountant not a repair technician. The accountant shows the dealer how good he is at his job by holding payment and increasing cash flow. Accounts only respond to financial issues. Usually a discount for quick pay will get it done. Of course it is not a real discount, you mark the invoice up 5% and then tell them if they pay within 5 days they get a 5% discount. Of course nobody can pick up the parts until the invoice is paid. Hope this helps. Keep up the good work.

Increase all prices by 30%. Give 30% discount for pay on collect. Watch the dealer suddenly find a why to pay on collect.

Better still, increase charges to this dealership by 25% AND require that they pay before collection.

Problem is at dealerships, the accountants run the place. They crack the whip on the sales directors to move metal, only see a parts department as a drain on finances with more dead stock than moves and the service dept is a drain on on the whole place. Bet any customer either for a new/used cart or someone having a service doesn't get 90 days due never treatment they hand out to suppliers. Stick to your guns... paid for in full before being released to them be it trade or walk ins.

I used to do work for a Ford dealership, they paid their invoices fairly timeously up to a point then they missed payment, we resent the overdue invoice, emailed them, called them, spoke to the financial director, and they still didn't pay months down the line. Excuses of lost paperwork, job cards etc. Bunch of ©§°€¶s

If they cannot pay on collection, tell them politely that you cannot do the work assuming you can afford to lose them. I suspect you are more valuable to them than they are to you given the limited number of folk who do what you do.

i use to have a contract with the local county council which also covered the police and ambulance contracts i had..you think main dealers are a nightmare,my terms were 30 days but i never got ongoing payments for 3 months and even then i had to threaten court action..the work i did for Ford and VAG were not bad as i had a 1 person contact but that was about 20 years ago so i suspect times have changed

Isaac could do a video on John crank polishing; or else we might alternatively enjoy him both finding and overhauling a Holy Grail while we wait....... Treat the no-payment dealer to returning work as provided, untouched, after giving a bill which if paid is then divulged as the required pre-payment by bad payees. If they leave without paying in the belief the work has been done they can then maybe have an epiphany. An alternative you can try is load EVERY bill by 25% with payment in full within 5 business days at a 25% discount. You can then feature interest payments contractually declared for late payments on top of the 25% loading. I tried these methods and they work. You need to protect your cash flows.

Instead they will complain that the work was not done according to their expectations!

Common practice between large companies is to jack the price a percentage and then offer a smaller percentage discount for cash on pickup or a lesser percentage for payment in x days. Cheap mongrels always take the maximum discount options. It’s a game to them and they will always claim to be a dollar short and pee in your pocket if you let them, while they play the overnight interest game. Buggers all have deep pockets n short arms. Isaac doing the second channel is a great way for him to develop communication skills and public awareness. Take care and play safe.

Have you had any work done at a main stealer - they want paid before they will release your car. Most of my customers have internet banking and can and do pay on invice/receipt of goods.

Sounds like they are giving you the runaround. Typical accountants ply to delay making payments for as long as possible. If you can remember a large supermarket chain were actually asking their suppliers to pay them to put their products in a more prominent location before accepting them as suppliers. Fortunately some saw through their game and stopped supplying them.

its normal to pay before you leave with a car/engine in the Motor Trade ! The main dealers are just trying on, get paid just as the expect payment when when you pick up parts from them.

I worked in main dealer parts all my working life. It is true that these days they do not have a company credit card but that is no reason they cannot pay you by BACS transfer, it might be a few days depending on what day of the week it's, some only do it once a week. Just say to them they will need to pay by BACS, the SM will soon get it sorted if accounts are holding up a job.

In many developed countries you can do real time bank transfers. ie you pay a bill online and the payment immediately appears in the other parties bank account.

Lee thought you were asking for interest on overdue accounts? Standard practice and I'm sure main garages do it. Good idea for content on main channel and Isaac looking after Chanel 2. Get Issac to do things like crank comparisons, block comparisons, college and apprenticeships covers. Cheers.

I think you need a dedicated administrator to run the office, someone who can answer the fone but also once a week ring up those owing and nag them into paying and those that don't pay hand the debt off to a collection agency or small claims as no company is going to want that smudge on their record book. I have also suggested several times of working with your friends in the business and build up a database of bad debtors, so if a chap knocks you for money your network will know and he would have to go considerably out of area to find someone to take on his work as it will say to your friends in the business too to not allow credit work for that person and they pay up front or no workee done. Snap On truck runners operate such a list, maybe a chat with your local one might yield some ideas and it will put paid to shifty fibbers knocking firms for hard earned.

Ref payments easily solved let them know its ready and they can collect once payment has been received when it is this way they magically process it as they need it - also add a storage charge if they don’t they quickly learn if you let them they will take take take

For the main dealer issue - build a 10 or 15% charge into your estimated invoice. Tell them they’ll get a 10 or 15% discount if the invoice is paid before or as the work is being picked up. If they don’t pay at the time of delivery or before, they don’t get the discount and you make an extra 10 or 15% for your mental anguish from dealing with them.

Whether they have a card or not is irrelevant, send them a pro-forma invoice, when it is paid by BACS, card, bag of cash, whatever ... when it is paid, they can collect. If they don't have a card, fine, they can pay by BACS. No payment, no collection note, no collecty! When their service dpeartment needs the parts just tell them "well, we've sent the invoice, YOU go and chase up your accounts department!" ... job done.
