First set of tracks you were at were the former NYC Egyptian line to Cairo Illinois. Progressing west from there the pulled up roadbed/driveway is most likely the former Milwaukee Road southern Indiana line to Louisville and the active double track line would be the UP former MP/L&N (C&EI) line.

Dang it! It happened again... I got lost at Ritchie Bros. .. again.. this time in a whole different State than last time. Heck , I woulda been able to help with the small vehicle issues you had, I'm an expert on breaking down in the middle of nowhere, on long trips, with no phone, and no money... it always works out fine. I love this new adventure you are showing us. I know little about about trains, and less about about the Midwest. I'd love to drive out and dig in and help y'all, but I'm allergic to cold weather (anything below 50°F). What you are doing, every part of it, is all new to me, and it's fantastic. Keep on sharing. When you mentioned you had about a mile of rail, I thought, 'that's a mile more than 99.999% of people in our country have'. I doubt there are 6000 people in the US who could say they own a mile of rail and have the knowledge, ability, where-with-all, and gumption to take action and put it to good use. I'm gonna change that to 99.99998% of people, making it sixty-ish individuals in the entire US, who MIGHT be able to do what y'all are doing. As of this morning, 20 miles from my front door (and all 20 miles is needed) there are 80+ huge Container Vessels and another dozen Tankers all lined up and waiting to be unloaded. All that 'stuff' has to get transported... Y'all are a part of that for our Country.

Your statement about having to add coolant to the Pathfinder caught my ears as a mechanic. I know some of the older units had isssues with the transmission heat exchanger in the radiator leaking internally. I forget which happens, but I think coolant gets into the ATF since it's under more pressure and would contaminate the transmission/ATF. How's the ATF look in your?

Sounds like the brake caliper pins on that F350 have some corrosion on them and the heat eventually defeated the corrosion, a classic example. I would recommend you pull the calipers off remove the pins lather them down liberally with brake pin grease, and replace the rubber boots where the pins go in. Afterward, put it all back together, no need to replace the caliper I'd bet you it's fine. Do that for both sides. Ahhhh the joys of living in one of the rust states, I know, I'm from NJ and had that happen more than once when those stupid rubber boots fail.

Lorenzo on the BNSF has a four track staging area. You where it the east end. It has been constructed in the past 15 year. This location had the two track spaced along distance a part witch allowed for the four track staging in the center. The history is interesting the South Track was constructed by the Chicago and Alton Railroad and the north track was constructed by a railroad that became part of the ATSF. The Alton become the GM&O then the ICG. In the late 1980’s the IGC sold off it’s Joliet to St Louis route. This south track that ran along the ATSF main line was part of sale it was sold to the ATSF. The remaining part of this IGC Joliet to St Louis line was sold to the short lived Chicago Missouri and Western. That allowed for this construction BNSF Logistics Park Chicago is east of this location. And BNSF using this location to stage mostly intermodal trains here. This route sees mostly intermodal training heading into Chicago.

You comment upon the demise of railways in USA. Here in GB we had a massive closure of uneconomic lines in the 60s. Alas we not only closed the services - which probably needed to go = but cleared out the tracks and released the land for other purposes. Many of us Brits see this wholesale ripping out as a mistake as a few closures have now been re-opened

My F350 gets a new pair of rear calipers almost every year, because they seize up. Doesn't matter with new fluid, anti-seize on the pins and whatnot, always seizes the piston. It probably needs something like a brass liner or whatever in the cylinder but at 60 bucks I pop, I just keep replacing them

The caliper might have frozen due to salt. I’m a tow truck operator in Australia near a beach and often tow salt water flood damage 4x4’s. Often if they sit after getting drowned in salt water a brake will lock on, I’m sure it would be the same in snow with road salt. Only takes a small amount of rocking back and forth, or a heat cycle as you guys did, to free them up
