Hi Rob, noticed on the dash it's 53,000 miles overdue a service so it's done 63,000 since it's last change, might be worth giving it a full service to go with the new plugs. Shows how bulletproof the little hyundais are for it to still be running and with no chain rattle. Great video though found it very interesting and glad that you guys got it running without the costs spiralling away.

In western Canada we have extreme temperature swings, especially in winter. When a vehicle moves from a warm place (11c heated garage) to a cold place (-30c outdoors) condensation can develop within a gas tank. This can result in a poor running if not no running condition. In order to prevent this poor drivability condition, it is recommended that methyl hydrate (gas line antifreeze) be added to every other fill of the gas tank. It has been my experience that this is the cheapest way to repair a possible poor fuel issue for a few dollars. I would recommend that you add 250-500ml to the gas tank and try to agitate with the fuel in the tank by rocking the car. Good luck!

Just fixed an i10 with this same problem G3 LA engine. Tried new injectors, fuel filter plugs etc etc. Lots of head scratching. At the end of the day the piston rings were worn causing the cat to block with burnt oil causing back pressure. Take out the up stream o2 sensor and the engine will run albeit very loud as it can now breathe. Sorted mine with new rings, cylinder de-glaze and a new cat. Runs a treat now. Don’t be fooled by apparent good compression figures. Mine were showing around 200 psi even though the second compression ring was visibly about 50% worn down! Previous owner obviously gave up on it when it wouldn’t run and abandoned it. Thanks for producing great content!

Personally highly rate i20's - well built and drive nice. Wondered if a fresh tank of fuel with an additive might help. Quite like the comments about a blocked cat/silencer - if it can't breath out that might explain the symptoms.

Strange how this car wouldn't run until you loosened off the fuel rail? Possible vapour lock in the fuel rail? I know Diesel engines can fail to start if the fuel rail isn't fully bled, and this is the only thing I can think could have caused this problem. Great episode!
@dave644510 күн бұрын
I'm thinking more of an inlet manifold problem rather than injectors. They looked good when out when they were spraying and by lifting the injectors gave the cylinders air and air needs to come through the inlet manifold!

Those Hyundais don't flag up sensor faults like European cars do. My sis in law has an i30 where the crank sensor failed to the point the engine used to cut out - I only managed to get the engine light on long enough to diagnose it by driving it hard
@richiejeal9 күн бұрын
This is a hydraulic lifter issue. By holding the injectors partially out of their ports, you allowed air into the combustion chamber and the engine ran. Once it ran the oil pressure built up and the lifters opened the inlet valves. My opinion but plausible.

Removing the injectors opened up some holes for air to get in. Not 'more' air, 'some' air. The inlet system is capable of flowing more air than the engine could need flat out, so opening those little holes should make no difference. That suggests the intake system is not letting the air through. Stick a camera down the inlet manifold from the airflow sensor. You said it was a new air filter. Did you put it in, or did you find it there? Is the old one in the manifold as a mouse nest?

Perhaps this car got abandoned due to being unable to be started, the owner presumed it had an expensive problem. Hopefully replacing the injectors will do the trick, nothing else wrong. You both had a lot of patience, and luck in figuring what the problem is. As to doing paint work, I don't think most buyers will care as an 8+ year old car and likely to get a few more parking lot and other minor dings anyway for an everyday vehicle.

If this has sat for a number of months I'd drop the fuel out of the tank due to E10 fuel segregation. Ethanol binds moisture and now it's up to 10 percent ethanol, I see far more problems with stale fuel, zero throttle response at times, cutting out ect. It's a good starting point for testing with a fresh tank.
