My grandparents came from Palermo area. After they came to America, they bought a 22 acre apricot ranch where I was raised. I just thought the same thing. The old building will make an amazing AirBnB. Imagine staying at an Olive Farm with a view of the ocean. I think it'd be so much fun for the family to camp around with their camper for the summer, using the building as a rough kitchen area/living area while building the home. But I'm sure Sara and Luce have put a lot of thought to make their decision. Whatever they do it'll be wonderful. This family is so lovely. If they do an AirBnB I would love to visit. I'm 70, and though I've travelled a bit, I've never been to Italy. It's on the bucket list.

Congratulations! I have walked this same journey. My farm is in Caccamo. I am happy they have left the nets as they are quite expensive to purchase. I cried the first time I harvested my olives. It is a very emotional experience. God will speak to you there. Best of luck to your family! ❤🎉

Your experience is so similar to what we had when my husband I were younger! It’s almost uncanny how your feelings for the energy of that property are exactly what we experienced. The same knowing, the same blast of positive energy and the same excitement for the future of our lives there. Our farm was in the high mountains of the Western Cape in South Africa with views that swept across valleys to the snow capped mountains of the Matroosberge. We grew plants for their essential oils and toiled away from dawn to dusk. We even had that same thistle (Perde thistle or horse thistles in English) that you found which needed to be eradicated! We had to sell it eventually due to our growing older and no longer strong enough to carry on the hard work, but not a day goes by without at least one memory of that magical place and the longing that still remains. May you thrive in your new adventure and may you live long, happy lives there.

When I lived in Sardegna, the family I stayed with, used to borrow the neighbors goats and sheep's to eat the grass in order to avoid having to cut it them selves. It saved them a lot of time. I thought it was a great idea.

Beautiful piece of land. I love the old olive trees. Mom had olive trees in California. They produce on a two year schedule. First year they produce a lot of smaller olives and the next year they'll produce fewer olives, but they're bigger. Sometimes they're much bigger. Mom made sure the tops of the trees were not picked. In the winter, the flesh of the over-ripe olives would turn to oil and the birds loved them. There's not much food for the birds in the winter, so mom's olive trees were very popular. It's AMAZING The property has so much character. Auguroni. My family is from that area -Palermo-San Nicola L'Arena-Trabia- just before Termini Immerese. My dads family did the same, came to Canada to make money and went back and opened first, one forno in Palermo, and later in San Nicola L'Arena. On the drive from Palermo (on the old-original highway, stradale, I think it's called?) as you approach San Nicola, there is a Tower (Torre Normana) right on top of a cliff where the road curves...it is so majestic, dramatic and BEAUTIFUL...it takes your breath away. Last time there we rented a house in San Nicola on the beach, what a dream. So happy for you, and happy to see how much you appreciate it the area too. So much to explore in Sicily...la bellezza non finesce mai! E il mangiare...pasta a forno, arancini, panelle...ENJOY!

Complimenti, amici! A couple of suggestions from a bilingual italiano/inglese friend. The verb ‘to clean, cleaning’ is predominantly for indoor spaces. Even with a car/van, you wash the outside but clean the inside. So to describe the jobs on the land, better to use ‘to clear, clearing’. This works well for the more general idea of tidying up the area, removing overgrowth. Then if you want to describe cutting back the grasses and low bushes- use ‘to slash, slashing.’ The trees need the verb ‘to prune, pruning’ or to ‘cut back/cutting back’. I wish you well. We bought a 70 tree chestnut orchard with a shed on it at your age, it was a great adventure. My main advice is to make as many local friends as you can to help you and advise, but be careful to listen to your instincts and do your own research too. The old ways aren’t always the best, and there’s a new era of climate change to take into account. Buona fortuna!

Great Job! Buying undeveloped property is so fun. I always start with building a garage with small living quarters to keep tools and have electric, plumbing on site. Then it is just hard work. Enjoy the journey. Congratulations.
