buy a box of baking soda for each room/closet, open it and set it down in the room. Within a day or so, it'll suck most of the stink out of the house. A fan moving the air around will speed it up.

I remember this feeling so distinctly when we bought our first house. Such an emotional experience when the realization hits you actually own this place... and then the exploring begins... and then very shortly after the list of repairs and changes begins, lol.

I'm really happy for you guys. Welcome to adulthood! I think it's adorable that Kari thinks the interior will be done in 6 months! Having moved recently, we've discovered that ANYTHING house-remodeling related takes months longer than pre-Covid. Everyone has been doing the same, so all the craftspeople are booked out for months.

I got super emotional while sitting next to my wife in the house we just bought while watching Kari getting overwhelmed and tearing up as she talks about having a home to call her own. Congratulations to you both!

Man, its weird because this feels like the most real and relatable vlog I've watched of yours. I think it's due to your new house layout and how similar it is to an old Australian home, like the brick fire place and open plan living and kitchen area, plus the bathroom heater lights! When I was looking for a new place, the majority of affordable houses were old and very much the same. So excited for you guys! 17:35 always rooting for you!

If you're not moving in for a month, do the floors. Probably a lot of the smells are from the old carpet. Better to have new inexpensive carpet. Then start on the other things. GOOD LUCK!!
@ScottPDX3 жыл бұрын
This! Paint, Ceiling and floors are a PITA to do in an inhabited house. Get that done and you can move in. Hire out the kitchen and baths, or do some trade. My guess is you are a better camera guy than contractor. Its sucks making the mistakes pros already learned from...hours =dollars.
@onocoffee3 жыл бұрын
Agreed. If you move in and then do the floors later - you'll regret it. When I got our new place, we did all the paint and floors (plus lighting and electric) before moving it. Took some time but worth it.

Congrats! ProTip: Don't make any changes until you have a *plan* for the entire house. Odor is in the popcorn ceiling and walls. Remove popcorn, but have a company do it since it probably contains asbestos. Then have it ceiling retextured. Have a painter prep & paint renovated ceilings and walls.

Kari - congratulations on your new stinky old house! (Gene too!) Super excited for you guys! Good to hear you have a realistic plan regarding interior work. Pulling the carpet and repainting the walls (and stripping the popcorn and painting the ceilings - now is the time with the house empty) will make a huge improvement on the smell. Looking forward to your fix-it/remodel vlog episodes! Some of the Quasar Science tubes, like the T8 dimmable, snap right into fluorescent light fixtures (but you have to disconnect the ballast first and wire the receptacles direct to the AC, which is pretty simple to do.) I hate fluorescent lights, but slapping in some Quasars would give you the same lights as Bradford Young used in a bunch of shots in Arrival, but in your kitchen!

Congratulations Kari and gene. you got a lot of work in front of you. One advice, don't start doing every thing (room) at the same time. Make a priority list, then make small project of everything you have to do and finish them. Prepare to have to rethink and redo thing. You will learn a lot and you have at this time no idea how much work you have in front of you. I would gladly help, but US is a bit far away from Norway. Take care :)

smell is mostly in the carpets and curtains. dump any of those you intend on replacing as quickly as you can, the rest shampoo and clean. replace the HVAC filter with one that has carbon. put baking soda boxes open in a few rooms. if you have box fans run them and you can even tape a cheap carbon HVAC filter to the back of those. that will get rid of the smell very, very quickly. congrats on the new home.

That's so cool!! I remember the first house I bought, it was super cheap because it didn't have a furnace so no heat ... which is kind of a big deal in New Hampshire especially in the winter!! 😁 Luckily we bought it in the summer and I had all summer and Autumn to install the furnace and baseboards! Anyway enjoy your new place. There is nothing more satisfying than working on your own house ... also nothing more frustrating ... but when your projects are done and you are comfortable in your space it will feel so good. Also when the place smells like you and not like old people! 😁
