I’m sure you know but if pin is too long you’ll torque cam bolt down and think it’s all seated when in actuality the torque goes into the pin and not the threads. Bolt then backs out over time and kaboom. Adding this for others as something to watch for since there are multiple cam pin lengths floating around out there and it’s an easy one to miss.

Youd be suprised on how many have reach out to me and said that the same thing happened to them. Its a problem for sure. SPecially in this day and age when power is more easily obtained vs old engine designs.

Not boring at all man l! I personally like watching engine builds and disassembly. After the first pin broke for you I was worried about 2 step myself. I have it all setup on my car but I haven’t used it yet

All else fails you still got the 387 put it in and boost it. Im sure it would hold up until you get another motor build finished. Every racer needs a backup motor.

Ya we had a 410 that was supposed to be in the car by now for the 363 needed a bad refresh as you can see. Just didnt play into the cards. Backorder on custom pistons 2+ months. Didnt see that coming

Just did the same thingwith my blown 351 but it broke a rod to and took out everything trying get a new put together by next week 🙃 😅

That's is a good amount of time on a race engine. Lucky it did not drop the valve stem and send it through the block. It will be interesting to see of the cam bolt hole is worn. That bolt backing off could have caused pin failure - or the pin failure could have backed the bolt off.

Thanks. Theres a valuable build lesson here. DOUBLE PIN your camshaft and if you can, put a bigger cam bolt in it. SPecially if you plan to make 500/600+

100% will NOT build anything that goes past 500-600 w/o double pinning

It sucks to see it come apart, sorry Dan. My take on that cam bolt... without the cam pin holding the gear in place against the cam it just walked itself loose. The rotational force simply unscrewed the cam bolt. Guy math here brother, just throw all those new receipts in a box and burn the box when the build is done. You don't need to know how deep the hit was to your wallet lol.

Does anyone know if AFR aluminum heads 185's sit Flat on a 351w engine without any clearance issues? Or do you have to take them to a Machine shop?

Yes they'll work If they're for a Small block ford 302 or 351W block.

LOCK TITE EVERYTHING, I DO , EXCEPT HEAD BOLTS AND MAINS, AND USE ARP HARDWARE ON EVERYTHING. KEEP ON TRUCKIN NEO KICK ASS AND TURN ON WIN LIGHTS.
