Yeah, you’re right. This is a temporary home so we’re being very careful about locking them away at night and being vigilant. We’ve been keeping chickens for many years and so far we haven’t had any bird of prey problems but foxes have been a nuisance.
@Mr1jimmer8 ай бұрын
Spending most my youth on a farm in the northern part of the U.S., we always had chickens .. That being said, it would be a good idea to raise the coup about 3 to 4 feet above the ground, and build a run with bricks or concrete at the bottom of the fence, so critters can't dig under, also a mesh or fence top on it to keep unwanted guest from taking the birds .. Honestly the varmints might not be visible at the moment, but now you have chickens so their bound to come around .. quick tip : secure your fence to the ground with stakes or use the RR wood tie timber so the bottom of fence isn't so easy to lift and go under ..

Although chickens cannot sustain flight they can fly enough to get into a tree to roost or over an obstacle to get food! Foxes are more intelligent than they are given credit for and they will find a way, they are also extremely agile and will leap over a 4ft fence without any trouble! Best thing you can do is leave the dog outside for a couple of fine weather nights when foxes are most active.

Self-sufficiency is always a good thing. I think it's great to have your own chickens and a way of growing vegetables. My grandparents also had a garden and grew beans, potatoes, carrots and lots of other things. And then canned them. They were self-sufficient in everything except meat. Great. And when you've finished renovating the outbuildings, you can create a storage area there. Then you know what you have and where it comes from. On the other hand, it also saves you money. I wish you continued success. And a happy Easter today. Greetings from Germany

A lot of progress this past week. The upstairs is coming along nicely. Good you've moved in, it will help being on the property, more time to devote to the project. Chickens - I wish you all the best, personally, just not my thing. I live in a town, in Florida, where they have free roaming chickens. They are more than a nuisance when allowed to roam free; rummage through residents yards, flower beds, tear up yards, crap all over everything, paths, patio furniture. Keeping them contained seems to curb the nuisance issue.

Few thoughts about your hens... If (when)we have the next outbreak of bird flu we will all have to keep our hens "indoors". If you build a run using 6 foot fence posts and chicken wire; with a solid roof (eg corrugated plastic) then APHA consider that as indoors since wild birds cannot poo on your hens. I know you have a few other jobs to do but worth planning for it now because when lockdown happens it will be a bit of a rush. Also; minor point but we call them hens. Chickens are what we put in the oven. Enjoy them and enjoy the eggs!!! ps Enjoying watching your build. Good luck

The upstairs is really looking spacious! I'm visualizing the beams all stripped and stained a natural wood color. I laughed at your dogs bringing the ball to Gil while he was setting up the chicken house. It looks really great! The black chicken looked like it had stayed up too late partying, lol. Yes, I wondered about foxes, which I have heard you have there. We have coyotes and hawks here in Southern California, and both can be crazy aggressive, going after small dogs, pet rabbits, etc. I've seen people who use a large wire cage with no floor, that they move around the lawn so their chickens can 'graze' on fresh grass during the day, but be safe from predators. Congrats on getting moved in!!!

Fresh eggs cool, I'd put some tomatoes in that greenhouse as they are so much better home grown, I think you said you were going to move it but while it is there you may as well use it?

The greenhouse is a bit of a mess and needs a good deal of attention but we’ll get some use out of it if we can. I’ll see if I can get some chilli’s growing in there 🥵

I know it's a temporary enclosure, but foxes can climb trees and may jump in from the tree.

Does the solar supply store power to keep the fence electrified at night?

Yeah, we charged it up with the USB before we put it on and now the solar should be enough to keep it going 🤞
