Yeah, you’re right. This is a temporary home so we’re being very careful about locking them away at night and being vigilant. We’ve been keeping chickens for many years and so far we haven’t had any bird of prey problems but foxes have been a nuisance.

Spending most my youth on a farm in the northern part of the U.S., we always had chickens .. That being said, it would be a good idea to raise the coup about 3 to 4 feet above the ground, and build a run with bricks or concrete at the bottom of the fence, so critters can't dig under, also a mesh or fence top on it to keep unwanted guest from taking the birds .. Honestly the varmints might not be visible at the moment, but now you have chickens so their bound to come around .. quick tip : secure your fence to the ground with stakes or use the RR wood tie timber so the bottom of fence isn't so easy to lift and go under ..

Id move the house away from the fence, because they will jump onto the roof & over quite easily. Need to clip their wings occasionally because its amazing how high they can fly

You should do a collaboration with one of the Power washer youtubers in the UK to clear your Drive. It would be an awesome before and after shot for them. That’s a good suggestion, there’s at least half the amount left over. We had 7 foot fence around our last garden and the fox still got in. We’re going to have to be extra vigilant until we get something more secure set up.

Well done getting the chickens all set up in their new home. Good job on upper floor and I bet you both feel better getting it cleared. Love your dogs - oops and the chickens too, haha! My husband and I had never cared for chickens until a couple years ago while renting an apartment on a farm. When the farmer and his wife took vacation time away, we'd babysit the chickens and turkeys too. We loved them, so sweet and incredibly soft. Enjoyed watching them all head up the plank at dusk to go to bed haha.

We wouldn't want to know that the ceiling could be Suddenly jerked open when we were in the bathroom and being vulnerable. 😞 Just a seemingly small thing that makes a difference And is a nice ritual for the humans too. 💛 😊 How fun to be able to see them from the caravan. 🐥 Top webbing is a good idea with an easy lift section on the corner you use most often for access. I'm not sure what the birds of prey situation is there.

Although chickens cannot sustain flight they can fly enough to get into a tree to roost or over an obstacle to get food! Foxes are more intelligent than they are given credit for and they will find a way, they are also extremely agile and will leap over a 4ft fence without any trouble! Best thing you can do is leave the dog outside for a couple of fine weather nights when foxes are most active.

Self-sufficiency is always a good thing. I think it's great to have your own chickens and a way of growing vegetables. My grandparents also had a garden and grew beans, potatoes, carrots and lots of other things. And then canned them. They were self-sufficient in everything except meat. Great. And when you've finished renovating the outbuildings, you can create a storage area there. Then you know what you have and where it comes from. On the other hand, it also saves you money. I wish you continued success. And a happy Easter today. Greetings from Germany

A lot of progress this past week. The upstairs is coming along nicely. Good you've moved in, it will help being on the property, more time to devote to the project. Chickens - I wish you all the best, personally, just not my thing. I live in a town, in Florida, where they have free roaming chickens. They are more than a nuisance when allowed to roam free; rummage through residents yards, flower beds, tear up yards, crap all over everything, paths, patio furniture. Keeping them contained seems to curb the nuisance issue.

Few thoughts about your hens... If (when)we have the next outbreak of bird flu we will all have to keep our hens "indoors". If you build a run using 6 foot fence posts and chicken wire; with a solid roof (eg corrugated plastic) then APHA consider that as indoors since wild birds cannot poo on your hens. I know you have a few other jobs to do but worth planning for it now because when lockdown happens it will be a bit of a rush. Also; minor point but we call them hens. Chickens are what we put in the oven. Enjoy them and enjoy the eggs!!! ps Enjoying watching your build. Good luck

The upstairs is really looking spacious! I'm visualizing the beams all stripped and stained a natural wood color. I laughed at your dogs bringing the ball to Gil while he was setting up the chicken house. It looks really great! The black chicken looked like it had stayed up too late partying, lol. Yes, I wondered about foxes, which I have heard you have there. We have coyotes and hawks here in Southern California, and both can be crazy aggressive, going after small dogs, pet rabbits, etc. I've seen people who use a large wire cage with no floor, that they move around the lawn so their chickens can 'graze' on fresh grass during the day, but be safe from predators. Congrats on getting moved in!!!

Also, keeping them alive in winter would be a real struggle. What king of heating would I need to keep chickens warm under a foot plus of snow or temps of -23 degrees Celcius or more? No eggs since we moved them but generally get a few a day so hopefully they will lay again soon

It’s only our second night in so no eggs as yet, maybe they just need to settle as they were laying prolifically before we moved them 😋. And 👋 from south Wales!

you probably find the chickens up the tree,as they like to roost up high. you would have to clip their wings to stop them flying.

Great job guys looks brill, may I suggest moving the coop away from the fence as they could jump on it and over the fence. Just an idea. They have a great area. Hope you get plenty of eggs 🥚🥚🥚

While contemplating the "What happens next" part. I had my money on it involving a canine assistant. The hen hutch would have taken far longer without them. 😉👍

Had an idea come to me about the tops of the windows. You don't have to lower or raise the floor to fully expose those windows. Cut a hole in the floor about a foot and a half wide and build a box over where the hole in the floor is then use it for a built in nightstand or something. Then put a tiny solar powered ligt in there to light it up at night.....Just a suggestion.

Best to get in a dumper bin, so you are not twice cleaning up from the top floor to the outside ground, and then wet, damp and ugly, gib board plaster etc. all again to be picked up and put in a dumper bin. Just a thought.

A little worried you might've put the chicken coop a bit too near that back wall. A clever fox could jump from there onto the coop roof without getting shocked.

I have seen foxes jump over 5-6 ft fences with ease. I wonder how effective would that fence be be it electric.
@theoldstationrenovation
@theoldstationrenovation 8 ай бұрын
We had 7 foot fence all around our last garden and the fox still got in, this fence is just temporary so we’ll have to be extra vigilant until we get a permanent run in place.

Nice to see the doggies again , I love ball being dropped for Gil to throw it. I hope you don't get bored of omelets and baking cakes with all those eggs? wonderful work upstairs did I spot a fireplace or was that just the chimney breast?

It was the chimney breast running up from the living room. We’ll always find a use for eggs, we do them for breakfast most days and Holly does a lot of baking 🍰 😋

Dogs thinking, new house? LOLbtw, same yourself lots of double labor, if you build something, do it at the spot, you want to place it, and also when breaking down stuff, put it inmeddiatly in garbagebags when possible, and also that old wood, safe it, maybe can use it in future, saves money, and also same, try to get it in hands, one time. Chapeau for saving real heritage

Fresh eggs cool, I'd put some tomatoes in that greenhouse as they are so much better home grown, I think you said you were going to move it but while it is there you may as well use it?
@theoldstationrenovation

The greenhouse is a bit of a mess and needs a good deal of attention but we’ll get some use out of it if we can. I’ll see if I can get some chilli’s growing in there 🥵
