It's not worth someone being injured for internet entertainment, likes and shares. That said, obviously my comment was tongue in cheek, I'm sure it's perfectly safe to hoon around on a jet-powered hovercraft with an open container of fuel and a child in the front seat. I used to have the scat, a lot of noise, dirt, but a whole lot more fun. 6 blades will make the throttle more responsive. Reduce the angle of the 6 blades since you only need lift, you need to keep the engine speed in the power range. You can reduce the duct size of the skirt to balance the lift. Keep it rear heavy to "land" or you will "nose in". You really should be testing on water, safer if you have a chase jetski . I would not recommend grass field unless you plan to start a fire...... Snow covered field would be easier on the Scat. Wear a light helmet and neck collar on your speed runs..🎉
@Nphen Жыл бұрын
This is the smartest, most well-informed, and underrated comment on here right now. They powered up the blades just to refocus them entirely underneath, giving too much lift. Then they ripped a brand new skirt on the pavement.

My good friend and I built a hovercraft when we were teenagers based on an issue of Popular Mechanics. We put it on an illegal trailer that we made from a Honda civic frame (acquired from a junkyard) which actually worked except that we were pulled over by the California Highway Patrol for using the licence plate from the front of my friend's Toyota Celica which we put on the back of the trailer (brilliant kids, ha!). Somehow, we talked ourselves out of a major ticket (possible jail time??) from the CHP and brought our monstrosity to a dry lake bed for testing. We got it up to 48 mph and it would spin like the "Tea Cup" ride at Disneyland when we tried to turn throwing up clouds of dust. We had the time of our lives.

Forst run with the jet engines I thought this was going to be a waste of time but once you got it dialed it was ripping

If we are classifying a Scat as a fulls size hovercraft, I think the Rolls Royce Proteus which powered the SR.N4 hovercraft can be classified as a jet engine so I'd question this being the "first full size jet powered hovercraft"

What a mess!.. the older SCAT hovercraft were limited by that Rotax single lung setup. It was never meant to go fast without serious modifications, none of which were done. Installing a couple JCats was just a waste of money for something that was not going to go very far. I have the newer 4 man version of the SCAT called the Air Commander and it has 2, 50hp ultralight motors in it stock! One is for lift and the other for push. I really don't think you guys did any reading on what you were trying to accomplish here, maybe just a bit quiet around the shop and..? Inserting more blades only sapped all your HP at an earlier RPM and also increased the rotational mass, that's where all your power went. The Rotax couldn't go into power band because your ears are used to listening to 4 cycle motors rev out.. 2 cycle power SCREAMS when it's happy! Just the right dude helping you could have made that a real fun toy without the J-cats and the destruction of the machine, they are getting rare!

30:22 Not going to lie, that looked very cool. If it wasn't for the fact you are completely out of control it'd be a great way to get around.

Hey Rich. I didn't think you are the guy who cuts fiberglass with grinder disc. I mean you can put circular saw blade on that thing and it cuts way better and with less dust. As a bonus, it's dangerous as hell and exceeds maximum rpm with 2-3x. It's not enough to cause immediate failure but it definitely makes life more exiting.
