That must've been a terrifying and helpless feeling for the person unloading the excavator, as the entire rig began sliding off the edge and they were along for the ride. This was one of those situations that was unforeseeable but a lesson learned would be to always chock the trailer tires when loading/unloading equipment. Possibly even add some stabilizer jacks to the rear of the trailer. Great video footage, and I'm very glad no one was hurt!!

Another viewer here from your comment on Matt's video. Great job on the self recovery. Just a quick thought for you. If you are unloading something off of a trailer that is going to pick up the rear tires of the tow vehicle, and the tow vehicle is 4 wheel drive, engage the 4 wheel drive in low range first. That will help hold the tow vehicle in place if the back tires come up. Like anything else, it does not always help, but it is a little extra insurance and may be enough to avoid a major problem. Just my 2 cents.

The use of the backhoe to move the trailer while still connected to the truck was Spot-On!. I do not know if you normally use support stands or blocks of timber/wood under the rear of the trailer when loading &/or off loading equipment but it would be recommended. I used to haul equipment for many years ago and we always used supports. It eliminates the trailer "teetering'" when weight shifts at the rear, resulting in the lift at the towing vehicle. My 02 cents.

Hear from Matt's video That was impressive. You need to do an explanation video on how the trailer lifted the back of the truck up You have trailer rear stabilizers were they not in use? Did you not use wheel chucks on the front tires of the truck or the trailer tires? Did you not set the emergency brake? Did you not put the truck in four-wheel drive if equipped? We need to know how not to do this in the future 😂 I'm glad no one got hurt! 👍

That is a legitimately good lesson to remember about a heavy piece of machinery coming off the back of a trailer and lifting it enough to make the rear brakes ineffective if you’re on a steep or precarious position. Either putting jack-stands or some other heavy duty stand under the back of the trailer would probably work, or just ensuring the truck is properly secured.

Thanks. Lesson learned!
@spyder0000695 ай бұрын
On gravel and a hill that still not enough because once the rear is up you only have the fronts and it will still drage the truck. The lesson is to chock the trailer tires but also if the area is sketchy you need two throw some 6x6 or some jacks under the rear of the trailer so that when the vehicle unloads it prevents the rear of the trailer from diving and prevents lifting the truck hitch. Its a simple solution but its easy to rush and think that it will never happen to you until it does. :^) Now if you think fast enough you can run the unloading vehicle forward to set the trailer/truck back down but most people are in panic mode at that point and are in for the ride.

Theres a saying we often use, 'improvise, adapt and overcome.' and that is exactly what you did here...and did well. So to claim your 'ambitious amatuers' status, I reckon was passed with flying colours. @leonhart24525 ай бұрын
I have watched a bunch of videos where any times I have seen simular things happen when loading or unloading heavy equipment on trailers. Once the weight of the equipment is behind the trailer axles the rear of the truck lifts up. In this situation it happened on a of camber spot on a dirt road and the weight of the trailer and load pushed the truck off the edge. I think that equipment trailers should have built in jacks on he rear so they can be put down to support the trailer so the trailer can't tip up when loading and unloading equipment. I tried loading a motorcycle on a trailer without it being hooked to a vehicle. I now put jack stands under the rear of my trailers, so this doesn't happen. Trailer tounge jacks added to the rear on each side would work well for this.

Yeah. I saw that on European trucks with long bed for transporting heavy equipment...at the end of the bed, where you put ramps down they have 2 hydraulic legs to support the end when loading. Would work great here to.
