There’s a reason an in-line 2 cylinder usually has both pistons traveling parallel. The vacuum produced by the engines firing gaps is erratic messing with the carburetor. The issue is you have cylinders firing at 540 and 180 degrees the 540 degrees again before another ignition. If both cylinders where parallel you could fire every 360 degrees providing better control of the standard carburetor. I’m sure you could get it to work but not with the carburetor the way it is not receiving enough back yet to get the venturis to function correctly.
@CaptHollister3 жыл бұрын
Parallel twin engines can be 360 degree twins in which the pistons travel up and down together, with each one firing on alternate crank rotation. 180 degree twins in which one piston is at tdc when the other is at bdc are also very common. Today, an increasingly popular configuration is a 270 degree separation in crank rotation in which one piston is basically chasing the other. This last configuration results in a parallel twin which sounds and feels like a v-twin.

Empressive build! Nice clean workmanship. I've cut a VW engine in half in the past. It's involved though I did not have water jackets to worry about. Cutting engines in half is nothing new it's done quite often with a Volkswagen Type 1 engine block. These are used in ultralight airplanes. In the 80s I had a J-3 Junior with a half VW engine. Although it was built from a 2300 giving it 78hp nearly 20 more hp than the original half VW. That lighter weight allowed me to stay Within fars part 103 category. Those engines run much smoother since they are opposed cylinders. Likely much of the vibrations felt within your lada engine is an imbalance. Then if it's vacuum advanced timing, that's going to mess things up. Leading to pre detonation which tends to heat things up. Would love to see a custom manifold that support two AMR500 superchargers on a Lada. It's what I have on my bush plane. ( Feeding 4 throttle bodies.) it's good for almost 120 fp extra torque and around 135 hp for short takeoffs or high density altitude. And the wine from the superchargers is an eye 😲opener! Lol I only give approximate horsepower and torque figures since those values vary depending upon temperature an altitude.

How about converting an engine into a self-contained water pump by running the engine on 3 cylinders and using the 4th cylinder as the pump with a separate inlet and exhaust for water in and water out via hoses. The camshaft would need to be modified so there is no compression stroke on cylinder 4, only the inlet and exhaust valves opening alternately. It would be a great unit for draining ponds or flooded basements, or fighting fires with an onboard water tank.

Did anyone think to tune the carburetor and re-jet it? It's set for twice the displacement otherwise, running filthy rich... EDIT: If it's a points ignition you might also be saturating the condenser because there's no spark energy leaving where 3 and 4 are missing. The heat's probably from a lack of crossover passages in the back of the head and block, it's getting a hot spot and making a bubble that blocks flow.
@nkuntroll2473 жыл бұрын
The carb jetting is most likely fine. They are meant to mix the proper amount of fuel based on how much air is flowing. More air more fuel. The inverse is also true. The condenser job is to prevent points from arcing when they begin to open. Ignition system will work fine if timed properly. I completely agree with you on the cooling. There's no doubt some areas where water flow is now blocked.

That's some pretty amazing work. The original GMC V6 (60s) was created by simply chopping off two cylinders. I wonder how the car would work if you used those two cylinders to power a generator which in turned powered electric motors?
@merlinmagnus8733 жыл бұрын
Guess the other option would be to remove the pistons and connecting arms from 2 cylinders and cap off the valve openings or turn the lobes off the cam to keep the valves closed on the unused cylinders. That would solve the overheating problem due to the coolant passages being blocked off. Days less work with the same power result.

Yes, running cylinder 1 and 3, remove rod and pistons from 2,4 would leave the engine in balance, remove the rockers from 2,4 would give the same effect ... but.. they did this for entertainment of... cutting the engine in half.. considering all the work, amazing that it 1) ran, and 2) didn't leak all over the place.

@Fabien26263 жыл бұрын
Exactly. And the firing of the cylinders would be way more even. Here they have 2 cylinders firing and then nothing for a revolution. Using 2 cylinders reaching TDC at the same time it would be the equivalent of a 2 strokes 1 cylinder engine. The carburator is also a problem. I suspect it's running a bit rich. Also the timing is not right. And the automatic advance may screw up everything because this engine doesn't have a smooth enough output. I think it got something like 12 HP, it should be something like 24 to 28.

@@CarsandCats I would love to take two V8 engines, one of the engines cut in half directly in the middle and the other two engines remove the front two cylinders and the back to cylinder. It’s skipping two fires you need to blend the spark wires so it fires one cylinder on 1 and 3 and the other on two and 4 that would help a lot
@wilsjane3 жыл бұрын
It cannot possibly run smoothly with the cylinders 180 degrees apart. Whatever you do, the two ignition strokes will always be 90 degrees apart.
@fivepointeightnate3 жыл бұрын
@@wilsjane It's just like a 2 cylinder bike engine. Like Glory said, get the distributor right and it will run correctly. It will still feel like a sewing machine, all straight 2 cylinder bikes feel that way.
@johnfox38453 жыл бұрын
@Glory Hold Sounds like someone needs to read an article or two on the subject of the 4-stroke engine cycle. What you are proposing is essentially a "wasted spark" ignition system used by millions of engines worldwide. As the name suggests, firing the engine on the exhaust stroke (which is exactly what you are proposing) does not provide smoother running or more power. Without modifications to the camshaft making it more suited to two cylinder operation, this engine isn't going to run any better.
@wilsjane3 жыл бұрын
@@fivepointeightnate My point was that a 4 stoke engine needs to have it's cylinders in line with each other in order to fire evenly, with one cylinder on induction, while the other is on ignition. If the cylinders oppose, the second cylinder will fire after 90 degrees and then their will be a 270 degrees interval. The cylinders are only opposing on a 2 stroke engine, which then fires every 180 degrees. As a design engineer, this is obvious to me, but it takes a while for most people to work it out. It often takes me ages to fully explain it to people before the penny drops.
@Nickwillfixit3 жыл бұрын
Now you need to make a six cylinder from a four cylinder and two more cylinders from another engine. One I have heard of is a guy driving a Citreon 2CV it broke so he converted it into a motorcycle with just the manufacturer's supplied tool kit, have you got a vehicle you could do the same. I would like to see you take a V8 and make it a V10 or V12. Maybe you should have settled for three cylinders.

@demontech06 Жыл бұрын
I know this is an older video, but these videos are interesting to see. Cylinders 3 and 4 were cut off, but the crank was cut in half as well. The firing order is 1,3,4,2, but the crank was cut with journals 1 and 2 at 180 degrees out. The firing order changed to 1 and 2, but the degrees of crank rotation is at 540 degrees for a complete ignition cycle. So an easier way to explain this is that the crank has to turn 540 degrees from ignition on cylinder 1 to fire cylinder 2. Then the crank turns just 180 degrees from cylinder 2 to fire again on cylinder one. This in turn created an uneven power balance in the engine. If the cam was cut in two places and then rewelded so both cylinders were 360 degrees apart, then the ignition wire could be moved to the number 4 position and most likely would run much better.

This was an awesome build thanks heaps guys!!!!! :D I think possibly the timing was set a couple of teeth out though ;) and the cut down intake manifold needed to be more direct as the air/fuel mix was "getting lost" on the way past the cut off cavity for the old ports (hence the hesitation and backfires out the carb) so a tube manifold would be best! :D ...And you could have kept that beautiful Lada manifold in one piece!!!! ;) hahaha I think if you done these things you would be surprised at the power! =D Keep up the good work and awesome videos guys!!
