Absolutely baffled by what Southgate is saying here. He is either being incredibly insulting, or has not got a clue how you win a football match. "Got to keep your shape". That is the worst excuse I have ever heard for only making a couple of subs in 90 minutes. Unbelievable. The "shape" means Trippier is incapable of making any decent forward passes to the man in front of him. It means we have Foden out of position, offering 10% of what he usually does when in the middle, partly due to Trippier. It means Kane spends most of the game dropping deep just to get a touch of the ball. It means Palmer hasn't got a chance of getting 90 minutes. It means means Trent doesn't get a game, unless you want to play him out of position in the middle of the pitch.

He put in worldie performances against Arsenal, Bayern and Liverpool on the way to the Treble. You could look at David Silva’s goal scoring stats for City, he never got over 7 in a season I don’t think, but his general play was still the best. I am not saying Grealish is as good as Silva, just making a point there. Grealish looked good at times last year but had 3 injuries that held him back. It’s not his fault it was Copenhagen, he’d just come back from injury and it was his first start, he looked the best player on the pitch and then he had to go off injured again.

Surely any normal manager learns from performances and makes adjustments the following game. It’s weird how we are so poor with several players playing out of position and SG continues to play the same team and same tactics. This is the 4th attempt at a system and we still look clueless. Surely he must give up, change players and the system. However incredibly GS thinks we’ve played well so far so he’ll stick with the same team next match. Such a waste of an opportunity.

Can't help but feel a degree of security with him available off the bench. England have done really well getting to the Euro finals let alone the last 8 of it. "Pride goeth before a fall" and that has plagued the England side and England fans alike for decades. Pride could be the thorn in their side. Perhaps Southgate and his players are approaching these finals with a tactical sobriety based on that incite/hindsight that the fans(lost in their proud delirium and unreasonable expectations) are just too myopically minded to grasp, that might explain the disconnect leading to the "unusual environment". By all means let the team go forward with the courage of a lion but leave "pride" out, it might be the key to avoid a fall this time around. Perhaps the best tactic for both the team and fans alike is to be humble before being humbled, again.
