I planted cougar onions in October. I harvested them last week. I had a few huge ones. Most medium size and a few small ones. Enough to carry me over. On the other hand, my red onions bolted. I was sick. They were lining up to be some fine onions. Of course I had to harvest them when they bolted because of rot concerns. I ended up sending the red onions and part of the leaves thru my food processer. I didn't figure they would dry without rot. They are delicous and make fine seasoning. I grew all my onions based on the advice you gave me when you were still at Hoss Tools. I fertilzied using the 20 20 20 and then the pure nitrogen. This was my first attempt at growing big bulbing onions. All in all I am very happy with my harvest. Thanks. I love you guys.

I put my onion transplants in the ground October 15th. I am in South central Texas zone 8b and I grow in raised beds. I'm growing Texas 1015Y and a burgundy short day variety. Mine are bigger than I have grown before but they haven't started bulbing yet. I have a few with scapes on them. My biggest ones have stalks over an inch in diameter. I fed them Garden tone 3-4-4 at planting and they have been side dressed twice with the same. I haven't given them any 20-20-20 this year and they still look good. They should start bulbing soon I would think. I am surprised yours are bulbing now. I thought I would be on about the same timeline as you. I know onions like Georgia. I saw them wild in a field there on a visit south of Atlanta.

All are looking great with nice bulbs forming. So far the Savannah Sweets and Sweet Agents have the largest bulbs with Plethora right in there as well. I used some 20-20-20 prior to transplanting and an organic 21-0-0 until mid January. For many years now I’ve weaned off a lot of the synthetic fertilizers because of the clay soil here. .

I bought several bunches of green onions at Wal-Mart grocery in November and put them in the ground over winter, just after adding a 1/2" of compost. I mulched them woth shredded leaves and hit them with a 7-6-8 organic pellet fertilizer a couple of weeks ago. They got hit hard here in NE Oklahoma zone 7A but came back after every arctic blast and now look similar to yours. They were bunching onions, so i don't know that they will bulb.

Look like some trophy onions in the making, T! I cut back to two varieties this year, Texas Legend (the old standby!) and Candy. Roughly 230 plants. I've found that those intermediates (Candy) do just fine for us here. Ours are looking good, they're at about the 6 leaf stage, so we have a way to go. I look forward to seeing you dig those guys! I would tend to agree with your assessment of the soil condition in that no till plot. It sure looks good!
