I noticed also that at that point when Isabella was singing about what Bruno had told her, it sounds at first different from the rest of the stories about him. He told them all about misfortunes that would be happening, but here he was just like 'you're life is perfect and all your dreams would come true'. It hits as weirdly different compared to the rest of them until you get to her song and you realize that her whole thing is that she doesn't WANT to be perfect, but is only acting that way for the sake of her family. Now that I think about it it is a really good bit of foreshadowing. I love this movie because everything ties into itself so good. Edit: thanks for +2k likes folks!

Well notably he never used the word perfect, just that the life of her dreams would be hers some day and that her powers would grow. Notably both things she started to move towards during her songbwhile freeing her self from the expectations of perfection the world placed on her.. So it's actually even more enteresting as she actually still took his vision as negative chains confining her to her fate, which is why she has that end voice. Yet his vision was truly positive for her as it was realized by her throwing off the chains of perfection.

@@werecoth Yeah it makes me think about just how many other prophecies he might've told that were neutral or positive but interpreted as negative because he's Bruno and "everyone always assumes the worst". We see that there was more to the story when he replays the same vision for Mirabel, the ending glass only changing when she points out the butterfly in that scene.

Dolores's prophecy specifically stated "man of her dreams" while Isabella's prophecy was "Life of her dreams" which implies that Isabella truly did not want to marry than man for the life of her dreams (and IMO maybe not necessarily a man but that's a different conversation) and I interpreted the "grapes on a vine" line as that there are different kinds of grapes just as there are plants but Isabella was always stuck growing roses. The moment she grew things not roses her life flourished and I found that beautiful.

I kinda noticed in Camilo's verse that he very much described Bruno as almost monstrous "Seven-foot frame, rats along his back" which makes sense because bruno left when he was five. All he really remembers is his uncle that seemed to bring bad luck, and the tiny little bit that he heard from his family. It makes sense that his child mind made the boogieman, and that just kinda stuck. (He also could have just been trying to mess with his cousin lol) I only noticed this because I knew that Bruno wasn't really that much taller than Mirabel

Also as a little kid he could have seen him sneaking around the house and since Bruno would only interact with the rats inside the walls he could have seen him carry some of them. Ja, I have personal experience with this kind of thing. Not with a person, but with stairs. I have bathmophobia (a phobia of stairs). When I was itty bitty, the eye doctor that I went to had those old creaky metal grate stairs that you can see through with gaps between each step leading up to the office as well as stretching down to a basement level where the lights were always off. The memory I always had of those stairs was that they were super steep, there were a lot of them, they were hardly stable, the railing was wobbly, and they spiralled down into an endless black pit. The feeling of going up them was sort of like those bridge scenes where the hero has to cross a long ragged rope bridge over a ridiculous fall and the planks of wood can barely handle their weight. Of course, in reality, there weren't that many steps and it was just a normal staircase. I would have been between the ages 3-6 when I was going to that office. We moved after that. That memory warped completely out of proportion in my mind, clearly. And I still have a phobia of stairs.

I love how this song gives an insight into Bruno's original personality, as the funny uncle. All the mentioned prophesies weren't actually future foreshadowing but him just jocking around. In Pepa's case he wanted to light up the mood and she took it too literally. And to the townspeople it was just very generic and silly things: grow a gut or lose hair. Even the fish, I mean... If you go around shaking your fish it will die. However, because of his power he ended up being taken too seriously and then being rejected. That plus the 10 years living alone resulting in him being gloomy and awkward. Instead, the real prophesies were those of Dolores and Isabela. And both became truth but not in the way they had imagined.
@werecoth2 жыл бұрын
Well Delores was straight up proven false or changed. As the Man of her dreams never became betrothed to another. That said if Bruno's vision was of the Proposal for Isabella's hand, and not that it would fail, it could have been a misinterpretation of the vision. As its made clear Bruno doesn't have full awareness of the circumstances of what he sees.
@Anastasia-fj2xu2 жыл бұрын
@@werecoth I wouldn't say that Dolores' prophecy was proven false, but rather it was vague and misinterpreted to begin with much like all of his prophesies. We've seen that his visions aren't set in stone and are a subject to change depending on if something is being done to bring about a different outcome. It's just that people settle on deciding that this version of events is final or they interpret it differently (like Isabella's vision - she did get the life of her dreams, just not in a way everyone assumed she would). If we look at Dolores' prophecy not from the angle of "you won't get the man of your dreams because he'll be betrothed to another" but from an angle of "the man who's going to betrothed (not married) to another (your cousin) *is* the man of your dreams" it makes more sense in the final outcome. As for actual betrothal never happening, I'd say it's just a technicality since by that point the entire town was convinced they were going to marry and all that was left was just a formality.

I like how to choreography in the video looks directly out of a stage play's choreography. A lot of musicals will have number where they get across that the scene has shifted to a new place, but since this is animated, they can convey that in a literal sense. And during Isabela's verse in which everyone else is doing a slow arm lowering move around her as she descends. "I associate with the sound of falling sand" is such nice foreshadowing. It's literal because it's talking about the way that in Bruno's liar, sand is always falling when he tries uses his ability. It being so vague shows how Dolores doesn't know exactly what he does in there, he just knows that when he's in there, sand is falling

@@JonahWho But, I am glad to see someone appreciates the sheer genius of this song as much as I do, I'm a professional opera singer and I love stuff like this- this number is a master class on how you compose a musical theater show-stopping number. Heck, the entire score, really- Lin Manuel takes the use of the leitmotif to Sondheim-levels here. Like: -How the first thing that comes out of Anuela's mouth musically is the melodic line that will come back as 'Dos Oruguitas', hinting that although she is talking about the present, the tragedy and trauma of her past loss is still hanging over her. -How Mirabel's "Waiting for a Miracle" is a melodically transformed "la Familia Madrigal", showing that she is uncertain about where she fits in the family as a whole. -Or how, during Isabella's "What Else Can I Do?" , Maribel sings the melody of "He told me that the life of my dreams..." at Isabela, because Isabela is finally 'waking up' to who she really is. The other amazing thing about "We Don't Talk About Bruno" is that it's a Variations On A Ground- all of the characters sing their individual sections over the same chord progression, but each section is a different melodic and rhythmic variation- that's how they all fit so well together at the end when Miranda brings them in. But I think the way that Dolores echos Isabella immediately after is particularly heartbreaking, considering the circumstances. I don't think people have realized just what a cohesive, organic and overall brilliant score this movie has.

Spoilers below about Pepa's part It's revealed later that what Bruno said during her wedding wasn't a vision, and was just him trying to cheer her up with a joke. The line "Bruno walked in with a mischievous grin" indicates he was smiling, which I imagine was because he was holding back laughter. And then he says "this looks like rain", which was likely meant to be a joke in reference to Pepa's weather powers and the fact that she was sweating. However, we've seen how much stress Pepa's weather powers cause her, and saying that joke when she's already anxious about her wedding would not have the good results Bruno hoped for, hence the hurricane.

Isabela's verse is one of the most important one in the song when you see the overall music. She's saying how Bruno "prophesied" that she would have the life of her dreams and her powers would grow. Mirabel understands that with "everything that Bruno predicts happens " but what Isabela is trying to say is that, her prophecy, up till that point, wasn't fulfilled. And all while putting this perfect facade. It also shows how Mirabel goes so hard on her sister bc when she hears that she could think "oh so not all of Bruno's prophecy are bad" but, bc Isabela's "perfectness" isn't good to her, she sees as bad thing
@locsoluv942 жыл бұрын
There is also the perspective that Isabela believes that Bruno's prophecy will come true if she just keeps up the perfect facade and does what she's told. She's later trying to convince herself that she's fine. This must be what "the life of my dreams" is supposed to look like.

We can assume that her power hasn't grown outside of pretty flowers because she's so surprised when she grows a cactus, she's never done that and therefore; her power is growing. She's not happy in the moment she's singing, not really rubbing it in, but moreso joining in with the family saying, "he promised me a good life but that still hasn't come yet."

@iantaakalla81802 жыл бұрын
This basically is an animated theater project given that it has the same property as many other musicals that you can get the story by listening to the soundtrack. Just by knowing the songs you can say that it’s a story where Mirabel lacks magic but the magic users aren’t better off because of pressure to use their gifts to help their little town and to be perfect (as per Luisa’s and Isabella’s songs) and by reconciliation with each other they get their magic house back, which was Bruno’s prophecy (which you can infer is one of Bruno’s prophecies based on the emphasis placed on Bruno in We Don’t Talk About Bruno and the building of the house in the last song). If you know Spanish, that also takes care of Abuela’s motivation for being so hard on the family and thus why Mirabel is nervous to announce she doesn’t have anything in The Family Madrigal and then reveals she wants a Gift in the next song, and also the existence of Luisa’s and Isabella’s songs. Thus, you now have working knowledge of Encanto’s story without knowing the details, like Bruno’s room being a sandy cliff, the house itself having a personality to the point of treadmills and gesticulating banner flags, the fiasco just after We Don’t Talk About Bruno, or the in-between of the house. It’s that much of a musical.

One thing I noticed on a rewatch was how some of the characters have their own leitmotifs that show up both in a song associated with them and a song about the family as a whole. Luisa has a bit in her song that also shows up at the end, Isabela has one that shows up in her song and the end, as well as "We Don't Talk About Bruno," and Mirabel reprises a bit from the opening at the end, possibly to reflect her character arc. However, I think the most interesting one is the Abuela's, because she has a line in the opening song that parallels a moment in "Dos Oruguitas." This song is about her and her husband, but it's interesting in that while the full song plays in the background, she sings part of the melody in the beginning, perhaps to symbolize how she views the family's gifts as a result of her own past? I'd love to see a full musical analysis of this film.

The song gets into your brain and gives you an itch that is only relieved when you open KZbin and listen to it at full volume.

I love the way Disney animated Camilos transformations, I expected there to be smears or something but you can’t catch a frame where he’s between the two, they straight up just switch his model out mid-movement and it looks so snappy I love it.

I listend to the soundtrack on loup for days before I saw the movie and when you hear it in context it's just like hearing the whole thing new all over again and the *visuals* are stunning and just add to the song so much. When you watch it you can tell that everyone involved took so much care and detail into making it them best. Disney knew this was going to be fire and it was

Thank you so much for your analysis, especially about Camilo’s part! I love all the songs from Encanto, but this one definitely sticks out. Not only is it a banger, it gives us so much information about all the characters and their relationships with one another. That being said, I really feel like I need to stand in defense of Vivo here! I personally don’t believe that any song from Vivo is as good as We don’t talk about Bruno, but in my opinion they’re still solid songs. I especially love the opening number, it’s so catchy! I understand why people don’t LOVE Vivo (heck, I don’t!) but I still think it’s a fairly good movie with good music, and with a very good “musical” structure, which many Disney movies actually lack (strong opening number, then a song about a relationship between two characters, an I want song, etc, etc, and then a closing song which mirrors the opening). I didn’t mean this comment to be this long, for which I’m sorry, but I feel like Vivo is getting so little recognition for it’s worth.

You're right, shit slapped so hard Bruno was bopping in the bg during Dolores' part

I’m so surprised you didn’t mention Dolores last little part before the crescendo/beat drop…it’s pretty important storytelling

also when you look up on the gallery area when Dolores is singing you can see Bruno dancing along to her singing

I'm torn. On the one hand, the Bruno we got is my favorite character in the film, and I love how it's a total subversion of what the movie built him up as and I think his significance is really meaningful on a number of levels. But there's a part of me, the part of me who looooooves Disney Villains and laments the lack of scenery-chewing "bad-as-I-wanna-be" main story antagonists in recent Disney Canon entries, that wishes we could have gotten the Bruno from Camilo's verse.

I feel exactly the same! I love Bruno's character, but I also love Camilo's Bruno character design so much! Would've loved an evil version as well, it looked so cool and theatrical.

Camilo is so handsome and funny he deserves his own little short or mini series, would love to see more from the side characters like him and Dolores. the little baby boy would be a great option on starting a series on Disney Junior almost like Go Diego Go where the kid goes around saving animals and going on other adventures!! can’t wait to see what they do with this movie, soooo much potential!!!

I love how different everyone's verse is, yet they all coalesce so nicely. Each character has a certain way their verse is sung, and it's always drastically different than the last. Like the way it shifts from Dolores' to Camilo's. Dolores is quickly whispering her verse and it gives off a very calm or quiet vibe, then Camilo comes in almost yelling his verse. It keeps the viewer on their toes

i still dont understand during the last part of the song when the madrigals dancing aroung mirabel, why the villager with the dead fish is included but then switched to Dolores

I had a feeling that Manuel had a part in making a lot of the hit songs like "We Don't Talk About Bruno". A lot of the songs are paced and sound very musical worthy, especially that one song in particular. The way they all describe Bruno in their own experiences both true and misunderstood, good and bad, it shows how in-depth he is as gives us some thought about why he may have left before it was confirmed.

As someone who loved Hamilton, this reminded me a lot of "Non-Stop," particularly at the end when all the verses start coming together. My favorite part of the song's structure, though, is the progression through the first half. We start with Bruno's sister, who knows him well and blames him for a specific incident that he arguably (accidentally) caused. Then we move to an older cousin, who knew him briefly and finds him creepy, but knows he's human. Then Camilo, who's young enough to not remember him, goes all-out on the horror because he's had to imagine Bruno from what other people say about him. Then we get the townsfolk, who technically knew Bruno, but didn't have a family connection to him and have created the general atmosphere of suspicion and gossip around him.

This song is what made me watch the movie. I’m obsessed. I rewatched this scene so many times and paused for every frame. It’s stuck in my head now. I’m literally getting emotional watching this.

You forgot to mention how at the end when they all say “HES HERE” they aren’t just talking about Mariano they’re also foreshadowing Bruno still being in the house

I wasn’t expecting this movie to be a musical. And it wasn’t until this song that I realized the songs were progressing the plot. Rewatching the movie makes the songs so much better because you know what it all means at the end. I also loved that Mirabel didn’t want to disrupt the party but she say Luisa’s door fading and decided helping to save the magic couldn’t wait.
