theres a huge hole missing in american culture. PTSD from WWII was never fully treated, vietnam was poorly treated, desert storm, Iraq, etc. we're still working on that. Most of them go on to form splinter groups that are easily controlled from a central, intelligent source. But this will likely be deleted. I have no stripes. I'm merely a well-read armchair.

As a kid, you only enjoy this movie as an action movie. But as you get older, you come to realize and appreciate the depth and realism. Stallone's acting was superb in this movie, and he honestly should have won an Oscar for it.

If you like Rambo you should look up F.I.S.T. Stallone plays a under paid dock worker. He ends up taking favors from the mob and ends up disappearing. It was based on a true guy by the name of John Kovak. Him and Jimmy Hoffa disappeared around the same time bc they where both becoming very powerful.

So sad. At his core Rambo was a lovely, gentle & compassionate soul. A good man with good intentions along with a fair & noble heart. And Stallone played Rambo to perfection as no one else could, amazingly & with poignancy, pathos, depth, intensity & conscience. He could have won an Oscar for his outstanding performance in this movie.

But in 1982 PTSD was just beginning to be recognized as a serious issue and a lot of agencies had little idea how to deal with those affected by it.

Mhmm. Underneath all that "Friendly Exterior", inside, Sheriff Teasle was a tyrant. He didn't want to help Rambo, just by letting him get something to eat. That was a MAJOR MISTAKE, on Sheriff Teasle's part! In the long run, Sheriff Teasle's arrogance and pushiness nearly cost him his life!

Despite being 80's action classic it doesn't change the fact that the movie misinterpreted the story and message of the source material. The general story is still there though but deeper themes are missing First Blood is just not very good adaptation of the book. I understand that Stallone wanted to make Rambo more sympathetic in the movie but that move doesn't justify a decision to present the authorities and the police as straight up sadist for no reason

And you are correct in that Sylvester Stallone used his clout to force changes to the film script to make Rambo a more sympathetic character than he is portrayed in the novel. Regarding the book I am intrigued that police chief, Wilfred Teasle, is described as "'sympathetic to Rambo's plight."

The opening scene leads to everything that happens in the movie. Rambo was already miserable but the notion of seeing one of his war buddies gave him such joy that he traveled the whole country to see him. The backstory behind the sheriff is that he was a retired Army vet from the Korean Conflict. He had a personal problem with Vietnam vets.

But the "bad guy" isn't detestable, and that's what makes it so good. The movie heavily implies that the sheriff is a decent guy, he is friendly and says hello to people, etc. It's just that he's misguided, stubborn and a little prideful, and he messes with the wrong guy so the situation spirals out of control. For those with sharp eyes they'll notice he's a Korean war vet and so has a personal issue with Nam vets.

When you consider that in the book they dive a little more into teasles history? When he tells the colonel "rambos not the only guy had a tough time w war" Teasle is a korean war vet. A lot of korean war vets looked down on vietnam vets. The irony is that korea was the war that time forgot. Guys like my grandad didnt face the discrimination viet vets did. Makes the scene that much more powerful when you realize one treats the other like crap bc the second one didnt win his war.

I was in the USMC. Our Company Gunnery Sgt. was a Vietnam Vet with 6 Purple Hearts and 2 Bronze Stars with Combat V. I asked him once what it was like coming back to the USA after such a brutal war. He told me a story of a time when he attended a University of Washington football game and the announcer asked that the crowd recognize him as a special guest, a local boy home from the war. He said the entire stadium started booing him. He looked me right in the eyes and told me it was the only time he ever cried while wearing his uniform.

I always felt so bad for Rambo in the beginning with the Delmar's family. He seems like such a polite and easy going guy and this is possibly the happiest we see Rambo throughout the ENTIRE franchise. Everything after hearing of Delmar's death is a downward spiral for him and we never really see him smile or be nervously optimistic like that again(damn near feels like a completely different character here 0:45). I also always imagined Ving Rhames as Delmar Barry in my head canon.

@@dawebslave3571 You seem to be missing a crucial part of the sheriffs backstory. He isn't bullying Rambo for the sake of it, at least not out of simple abuse of power. He is doing it because Rambo is a Vietnam war veteran while the sheriff is a Korean war veteran (the movie doesn't make this very clear). Korean war veterans felt a lot of resentment towards Vietnam war veterans due to the amount of exposure and publicity surrounding the Vietnam war in comparison to their own war which took place only years before. And to this day is still only talked about rarely in comparison and largely forgotten about. His animosity to Rambo is unfair and misguided no doubt, but it's understandable.

This is such a powerful beginning. The location, the cold, the mountains towering in the background. Something ominous and desperate about Rambo's plight, alone, cold, surrounded by a gigantic nature and a brutal social order ready to punish him. Learning about his friend's death, is experiencing the hopelessness of our existential journey, no compassion, no hope, this powerful man was "cut down to nothing" by an implacable disease. Rambo is a post-modern hero, no more kingdom/damsel/glory/friednship for the braves, only scorn, loneliness and rejection, but he is still a hero, and he is going to prove it, he is going to pit his desolated life against this desolated world. The ultimate affirmation of human despair, utter destruction.

One of the greatest action adventure movies of all time. It had everything in it. Suspenseful scenes, drama, tear - jerking moments, horrors of war etc.etc. way ahead of it's time. Cast and characters were super underrated too. This movie Inspired cinema and opened the great outdoors for movies like Predator, Surviving the Game, the Edge, The Fugitive with Harrison Ford and the Hunted in my humble opinion.

Most of his team were killed in Vietnam and was looking for Demar berry as was the last one of team Rambo believed to be alive. Later on when Rambo talks to Trautman he says he is the last one of team as Trautman thought Berry made it alive but Berry survived the war but later died of cancer due to exposure to Agent Orange. That Agent Orange was terrible as caused many veterans a lot of health issues and death. I had a Art teacher who taught for 34 years and was a Vietnam Veteran serving from 1968-1970 as was drafted. He suffered for years with various health problems and died at age 77 in 2020 from cancer due to being around Agent Orange himself.

Barry was the main combat soldier of Baker team. He was an expert in firearms, war machine operation, the Vietnamese langauage and survival tactics. He survived the war, and was last surviving member of the unit. But, nope, he really did get himself killed in Vietnam 🇻🇳 and didn't even know it. You see that land his mother had? Damn. The pac northwest is indeed beautiful. British Columbia, WA .. all magnificent scenery.

@@BillClay88 that is true that agent Orange was terrible and killed many brave members of Military like Barry himself in real life as well. My former Art teacher who died from cancer due to Agent Orange 52 years after serving in Vietnam from 1968-1970 thin when he passed away at age 77 in 2020. He was teaching when was drafted and came back continuing to teach for 34 years. He had PTSD. I taught firearms safety classes with him as well as he was a certified firearms instructor and taught home defense classes for the NRA.

My older brother and I were both in the NAVY during Vietnam. I was not over there. However, my brother went TWICE at his request! He was in North Vietnam above the DMZ, and in some of the rivers on his ship, shelling shore batteries. He made it back, got married, and had two wonderful sons. Unfortunately, he got cancer due to AGENT ORANGE. It is the "Home of the FREE" because of "The BRAVE." Rest in Peace to ALL who gave the ultimate sacrifice and to ALL MIA's.

Great observation. I'm 40 now. As a kid, it was all about Rambo II and III - winning the Vietnam War for 80's America and single-handedly tackling the Russians in Afghanistan. Watched both many times over, but only watched the original a couple. I liked it, but it was smaller scale and less action-packed to my naive young eyes. Once I hit my late teens / early twenties though and revisited the series -- boy, what a difference. Then it hit home. The first movie is nothing short of a masterpiece. I always have a big grin on my face when Richard Crenna (Trautman) walks into the tent and announces "I made him!"

For me, First Blood is far superior to the other Rambo films (and almost all of Stallone's output) ... the dramatic location, the atmosphere, the authenticity, profound themes ... love this film & I really can't say that about the others. And there's something very early 80s about the feel of it that I can't quite articulate ... partly that it's shot on film ... takes me back to my teenage years at the time.

It was very different in the book. Teasle was relatively nice to him at first. Took him to a dinner and bought him a hot meal. Then took him to the city limits and wished him well. Rambo even asks himself, "this guy was nicer than most, why give him a hard time?" To which he answered himself, "Just because someone smiles when they hand you a bag of shit, doesn't mean you have to take it." And then he turns and walks back toward the town, shit storm ignited. What a great line. I read it in 6th grade in 1978, and I still quote it to my kids today.

I had no idea the series had such a low-key beginning, packed full of important political messages. Will definitely give this a watch.

In the book, he's just wandering. He has PTSD, although that term was not yet widely used. The cop was more polite. Rambo was more weird and unkempt/unshaven. The idea of lots of drifters coming through small towns may have been new, since the Interstate Highway system and the adult baby boom were relatively new phenomena

He should have dropped Rambo off at a diner, and made him feel at home. Imo the secret magic to this film Is the location and enviornment Itself , It's so tucked away and tranquil , and feels so "hope"full surrounded by the grandeur of pure clean untainted nature , It's the furthest retreat from the filthy theatre of war. Rambo's fragile lost demeanor really resembles a man you Instantly have empathy for trying to find his way and start over , and something about that location and It's serenity just makes you feel like he truly could've emotionally healed and blended In If they would've let him , but they're so xenophobic. The sheriff was the core of the problem , his prejudice tainted everyone else of power around him and he didn't care to understand Rambo's PTSD , he just saw Rambo's emotional unavailibility as an enemy , Instead of recognizing a friendly fellow patriotic victim trying to move on he just victimizes Rambo again for being the reality within his god-complex driven matrix of "Hope". I think It symbolically relates to the town and It's guarded sense of peace how Rambo also contrastingly represented the guarded unpleasant chaos of life and the reality that any kind of "hope" dosen't always appear or function the way you expect but you should learn to embrace It In many forms. Ironically It was really the sheriff that embodied psychotic violence and warlike truama with paranoid hatred , It's the sheriff trying to act as a hero Irrationally oppressing another man with his power who did nothing wrong but be his own man , seeking the same sense of order but In his own peaceful way.

The switch from wide to close ups for the vital dialogue works so well here and makes it so much more impactful.

The irony in the scene where the sheriff drives Rambo out of town. He tells Rambo that wearing the American flag on his jacket combined with his appearance might cause him trouble. While at the same time, the sheriff is wearing an American flag on his jacket and displaying a very un-American attitude.

When Rambo visited his friends home was the saddest scene for me in the whole movie because it meant that John lost his family when he learned that his friend had passed away from cancer. All of his friends that he served with in Vietnam had either been killed in action or died when he got back. He had essentially lost everything that mattered to him.

I picked up this book back in the 70s, and I couldn't put it down. The Delmar scene is added for the film if i remember correctly. The descriptions in the book of Rambo's strategies t outfox the small-town cops are just terrific. You read, and you say to yourself..."Yes, that WOULD work!" And after a while, you root for Rambo to destroy the town....The Korean vet cop just won't leave well enough alone. Richard crenna was great in the film....And the leads....wel they were both sensational.
