Pulling my trailer up Spotted Wolf on I-70 , you can actually watch the fuel gauge move before reaching the top. I am on my 6th Ram diesel since 1996. Only going off the 6.7 though, they all seem to really jump up in MPG at about the 10k miles mark. They take some time to break in, then you really see an improvement. Of the last 3, after the 10k mile mark I would be between 19-21 mpg on them. I only see 15 when towing a heavy trailer. So the MPG tests on brand new diesels is a bit misleading on what you will eventually get. However, new, that is pretty close to what I was seeing as well.

@T51B14 жыл бұрын
FWIW, my 2019 Ram 2500 gets 21mpg unloaded going down the highway at 65-70mph. They are getting less mpg in this truck because it's a dually, low gearing, speed they are traveling at, etc. That faster speed and low gears brings the revs of the engine up and eats the economy up. Def and emissions really is not that big of a factor as some seem to think it is.
@chrism20425 жыл бұрын
It will improve as the engine breaks in. I have a 2018 crew cab Limited 4x4, HO 6.7 with Aisin trans, 3:73 gear ratio. I checked it on road first trip where I go approx. 120 miles with cruise set on 75 mph on I40, no bed cover. When truck had approximately 600 miles on it, that stretch of highway I averaged 16.4 mpg. I made the same trip yesterday, close to same outdoor air temp, truck now has 13,000 miles on it and it averaged 18.5 mpg. With the trip I made yesterday I have approximately 50 miles where I can set cruise on 58 mph once I get out of congested traffic. Yesterday it got 23.2 mpg, when it was new it was getting 21 mpg.
@AkioWasRight5 жыл бұрын
In fact, Cummins doesn't really have traditional engine break-in periods. Actual break-in is 300 miles, and that's simply to break-in the rear end of the truck before towing. The Ram Manual states, "A long break-in period is not required for the engine and drivetrain (transmission and axle) in your vehicle. Drive moderately during the first 300 miles (500 km). After the initial 60 miles (100 km), speeds up to 50 or 55 mph (80 or 90 km/h) are desirable." Well, they're well beyond the 300 mile break-in recommendation. As for mileage, I don't believe you got anywhere near 23.2 MPG on any HD truck, certainly not after regeneration and in real-world conditions. My truck's display will lie to me and say I'm getting 20+ MPG regularly, but it falls to around 17-18 MPG highway on a good day after it regenerates.

But, full trip real numbers at the fuel pump. My trip consisted of 398 miles to and from, I have a lot of driving on interstate prior to getting in slow/stop & go traffic for several miles through Raleigh NC morning traffic then 55 speed limit of highway and slowing traffic through towns for remainder to destination. Then the same trip home with similar evening traffic. I stopped and topped off tank 7 miles from home on return trip and checked total trip mpg. Thinking about upgrading to the Ram 5500 so I could have the 10ft toolbox bed with a backpack toolbox between the cab and the camper. The only limitations to that are the insurance could be quite expensive if I was commercial hauling. I've heard it could be $28,000 per year. Registration could be as much as 1,500 per year

It is an average, not an instantaneous reading. You can probably set it to show instantaneous if you were curious. The average reading on the dash is for that particular fill-up, not a lifetime average (although that might be a menu item in the display).

I have the same truck from 2014. As far as stuff going wrong we have gone through 9 recalls, and now currently wondering why if the truck sits for a week the battery voltage drops from 12.4 down to 12, there must be some sort of parasitic draw. While moving stuff near the truck one day I noticed that the bed light came on and so did the tail lights like when you hit the remote to turn on the bed light. My neighbor came over and told my wife while we were gone that our truck headlights are on, when they went outside to look they were off. Luckily the lights are not staying on long but something in the computer is automatically turning these lights on and they probably stay on for about 1 to 2 minutes such as the feature when you're walking to your house door when parked at night. I do have a battery charger handy but another hassle with my brand new $70,000 truck, although it is 4 years old now with only 30,000 miles. Took the camper off and I am enjoying driving it without the camper for a while but I do love my arctic fox 990 camper .nice to have room to store everything you need and not have it blow out of the bed or get stolen. Getting 15 MPG just like these guys or 10 MPG loaded with the camper

You have to break the diesel engines in before you will start to see good gas mileage. The best way to break them in is to tow heavy trailers. Once they are broken in, which is usually around 75,000 to 100,000 miles, you will easily be seeing 25 miles a gallon on the highway. (Not pulling trailers). For my RV use of the truck, I prefer the better mpg than the often unneeded 1,000 torque figure and no DEF tank. As I remember, I paid around $34,000+ for my truck. The need for DEF, diesel fuel costs, ,and the crazy prices for a diesel truck today has turned me off on ever buying one again. I will buy a gas engine next time. The new 1/2 tone trucks pull what once required at a minimum a 3/4 ton truck. I know there is a market for that new Ram monster TFL drove back from Vegas, but it has outgrown me in too many ways.

Yes some people buy 3/4 ton diesel for their highway commute and get 18mpg. But the trucks that are used as trucks (for example 1 ton duallys equipped with flat beds or fifth wheel hitches) come in displaying about 8mpg average fuel economy. The upfitted trucks with big “work truck tool box beds” get even worse mpg. But hey, you don’t but one of those things for the gas mileage, lol.

Super Viral Sick Vids the people who do hot shot trucking and anybody who uses the truck as a piece of equipment for their business certainly care about fuel economy. A truck that costs the same as a competitors truck but gets better fuel mileage doing the same work will be a much better investment.... even half a mile per gallon better adds up to a lot of money saved at the end of a year for a small business, and even more for a bigger business.

Take into account the size and weight of the vehicle, along with all the emissions bullshit that destroys fuel efficiency, and that makes perfect sense.

Duallies don’t get the same mileage as SRW trucks, but that being said, I was still unimpressed for a straight highway / cruise control run.
