Does the new towing systems actually apply the brakes? My Ram is a 2011 so old school now but all it does in Tow/Haul is change gears and it does have an automatic exhaust brake, which is awesome. But it does not apply the brakes. I don't tow anything near 30,000 lbs, maybe about 15,000, but damn that exhaust brake can practically stop the vehicle even on a steep slope. It sort of cuts out once there isn't enough engine revs but by then it is in first and not going very fast. That is one feature of the exhaust brake is that it is rpm dependent and works much better if the engine is reving high, so it is not consistent. But it sure does work. Almost too well. In my 2011, once you tap the brake it is on and it doesn't turn off until you tap the gas. I don't know what it would do in cruise control as I never hardly use it especially when towing. I just don't find cruise useful because everyone else isn't using it, or if they are they are going slow. Oh and I had an experience once where I hit some ice on a bridge in cruise and that was not pleasant. Thankfully I was able to steer out of it but I was probably 30 degrees to straight when I hit dry pavement again, which caused quite a jolt. So I never use cruise if there is water, snow or ice on the road anymore. All those vehicles you see in the ditch when it's snowing are usually all-wheel drives with traction control. Traction control sure gets you going, but it don't help a lot when you have to turn a corner.

That engine is designed to run like that. It's how an exhaust brake works on a diesel engine. The red line might be at 3200 rpm but those engines can easily handle that, they just stop making power at that high of rpm. Also using exhaust brake is much safer than using your actual brakes. Using physical brakes shifts weight around or can create brake fade. The brake pedal while towing, especially with diesel is an in case of emergency device, you need them to be 100% when you need it.

The engine has an actual cooling system unlike the brakes man. All it does is turn the engine into a big compressor and create some more parasitic drag in order to slow everything down. This doesn't harm the engine or reduce it's lifespan at all. A good driver in a vehicle with exhaust brakes should be using them at the correct speed and getting 90% of his braking from the engine itself. Yes, pads are cheap to replace. But you flat out shouldnt need to use them.

I still like Ram, don’t get me wrong, but I sold it and bought a F150 Raptor. The F150s I have had since 2004 have been flawless (I’ve had a few Ranching). The Raptor fits my wants in this case. I had modified the Ram to suit my needs, but it didn’t perform off-road to my needs, that was my fault and not the trucks fault. If I had bought a Rebel, I probably would still have it. @mtrujillo1973 Your reply is a bit of a contradiction/apples & oranges thing. Low end Torque doesn't matter on the Ike, as a manufacturer can easily spin an engine to power peak and leave it there with enough gears. Secondly, it is the huge amount of torque lower in the RPM band that results in the ability to use 6 gears with minimal penalty due to the wide RPM band with constant HP. BTW, almost none of what we're seeing with HD trucks has much to do with the engines. It's all cooling systems and drivetrain. This is why the fronts are getting so ridiculously hideous.

Yes, and I think they recognize that. Great videos, great content and nice that it is unbiased. One bit of criticism though... for the mirror stick out it would seem to be more accurate to open both windows and get an overall width, cab widths vary from truck to truck. Next up is the max tow rating of the RAM truck, yes it was higher than the other two but the Ford tested had a 3.55 gear set and GM had the only option of 3.42 from what I can see on their web site. If you buy a Ford with 4.10 gears you get an additional 3,400lb of towing capacity for a total of 34,700lb when properly equipped. Lastly, while the RAM sat really well in the rear it looked like it had the front end way up in the air seemingly due to the lever action of the air ride rear end. Perhaps it was in illusion. I wonder what the axle weights are (front and rear) when loaded. I'm a Ford guy but apart form brand loyalty, I like all three brands and can appreciate how you guys set up your videos. Just a few more specifics in terms of axle ratios as tested and different gear ratios availbale, as well as dimensions taken from more accurate points would be great. Keep up the great work, by far the best truck content of the web, awesome job!!! Chris Roy

Great video, When I'm pulling a load I like to have downhill control over uphill speed anyday.

I would really be interested in what the EXHAUST GAS TEMPERATURES are on these trucks with you pulling such a heavy load up a steep hill with it pedal to the floor. I love these videos by the way!!

The truck having nanny systems that apply the brakes is cheating. Wait until the first time it smokes the brakes on a long grade.

If only it had the most aggressive exhaust brake setup of the HD trucks so it didn't have to rely on the service brakes as much as the other two. Oh, wait...

It doesn't use the brakes. It uses engine breaking, look it up and read about,

As a lot of other people have said on here, I'd be skeptical about the truck sticking in redline for that period of time, regardless of whether you're fueling or not. Diesels aren't designed to turn RPM like that. Their parts like the crank, connecting rods and pistons are all much heavier than a typical gas engine and therefore generate a lot more inertia when they are turning. It's not unheard of for diesel trucks to snap a connecting rod when they start spinning that fast.

It's a small engine. 3k rpm is going to hurt it. I'd be concerned if was 13+ liters.
