This is why we fly within Mexico. We are retired in Chapala and do drive there. But, after driving from Florida to Chapala earlier this year, we’re more than happy not to drive again. I’m so sorry this happened to such nice people. But, you’re both safe. That’s what matters.

First class buses are another relatively safe and affordable way to get around Mexico, with service far superior to Greyhound in the US. Bus companies like Primera Plus offer a 10% discount when the ticket is purchased online. Driving a car in Mexico is too much of a liability, though I've never had any issues of this type with my motorbike.

That was the one time to keep filming. You shouldn't have shut off your camera. That's why dashcam is a thing. When those cops saw all your stuff in the car, you look foreign, you look old, and finally that you barely speak and understand Spanish, those cops found their easy victim. Be careful out there. Elderly abuse is real.

This was a cartel posing as police. I was stopped once outside Puerto Vallarta and there were 4 police trying to cause confusion, speaking Spanish and threatening, and I said no money just give me the ticket, and their attitude changed and said they would settle for $40, and I told them give me the ticket or $20 and they took the money. I spoke to a real estate agent friend of mine there, and he said if it’s little money and they take it, it is police, if they want big money only, no ticket, and have a group it is cartel.

I’m so sorry this happened to you in Mexico, it happened to me around 10 years before moving to Mexico. We were only taken for around $100. My advice is to always learn where the local police station(s) are in the area. Several suggestions, 1. Learn the rules by going to city hall, travel agent, or local police station. Or even at the border. 2. If you are near the police station, drive directly there, do not stop until you get there. 3. Never stop in a secluded area, if you are not near the station, drive to a busy location before pulling over. 4. Do not turn off the camera. 5. Only pay cash at the police station. In your situation I hate to say it, you were ripped off, if the fine was $1000 they would have never taken $875 or anything less.

I am so sorry this happened to you. We were in Cancun and Tulum in 2022. Every way we turned we felt as though somebody was trying to scam us; car rental companies, touring company, etc. It really was a turn off. On another note we had two policemen stop us driving out of Manta, Ecuador. My husband passed on a solid line like every other vehicle was doing. He was at fault and the two officers said we had to pay them $200 or they would 'arrest our car'. We ended up paying $100. We were scared as well and just wanted the situation to be over. I feel as though it was prudent of you not to film the situation. The outcome could have been worse. Glad that you are both okay.

Small pockets in Mexico that Americans out number the Mexicans, but the TRUE gentrification is happening by Mexican citizens. Yep..the younger generations all go to college and get degrees as college is fairly inexpensive. They want more than their parents and lots more than their grandparents. With professional degrees they make more money than at any time in Mexico's history. A HUGE middle class has emerged. Thus gentrification by Mexican citizens. Americans do not understand the consequences of living in someone else's country without learning the language. This is something I keep writing about in these videos put out by Americans who usually don't speak a word of the language of the country they choose to live in. I can understand when an eighty-year-old retiree decides to move to Mexico, he or she is going to have a hard time learning the language but I have seen so many cases of people that put out KZbin channels, who are in their fifties, and still can't put together a simple sentence in the local language. Mexico has so many beautiful places to visit and in general, the people are very friendly, plus the food is varied and often great but......... And that "but" is the elephant in the room. The police and many in the military continue to be corrupt. The unfortunate people who make their way up from Venezuela, cross Colombia, risk their lives walking through the extremely dangerous Darién Isthmus, take buses or hired vans across Central America, cross the Suchiate River, which is the border between Mexican and Guatemala, and then try to get onto the roof of La Bestia, the train that will take them to the north of Mexico and close to the U.S. border, are regularly stopped and robbed by the Mexican police or army. Even to get on La Bestia they have to pay railroad workers to get the train to slow down enough so that they can climb aboard. The recent videos by the KZbinr known as Bald and Bankrupt will show you the horrifying journey these people make and the obscene corruption of the Mexican authorities. They are rarely robbed by police until they get to Mexico. For me, a person who lived in Mexico in the seventies and part of the eighties, when Mexico was safe and the only thing you had to worry about was getting diarrhea from the bad water, the present situation is very sad.

$1000 I live in Mexico for 47 years, I would laugh in there faces, I very seldom get stop for something I did unless like a traffic infraction, usually I can talk my way out and if not just tell the cop if he could please pay it for me, be smart about it in most cases 20 or 40 bucks never not that kind of money, no way, I have got out of tickets just by arguing, they just let me go usually I can talk my way out dont get scared, the Mexican police always have there emergency light on, you can go to the police station and pay the ticket and also talk to the police captain that is way to much there not going to take your car and put you in jail, its a bluff you should just go to the station and explain 1000 sound pretty high, you can only drive cars, certain days of the week ending numbers of your plate can drive for smog control even though newer cars have smog devises In Mexico not a real problem there is so much all kind of Cheap transportation in Mexico city you really dont need a car, but many people do, there taxis, there the metro, there's buses, mini buses, Vans ect.

Did you watch until the end that it’s a real law about the license plates and not a made up story? So the ignorance of the law is not an excuse for breaking the law. Yes they were scared and they had to bribe the cops. That’s bad and should not happen but otherwise the car would have been impounded.

Do you have American plates? I moved to CDMX in 2010 with American plates. I was scammed in Estado de Mexico from 2 policeman as I drove in from Texas. The scam happened in the state of Mexico. I am wondering if you were also scammed there. Your title implies CDMX. I now have Mexican plates and have avoided this issue for 14 years. It is true that if you drive your car on a no drive day (based on your license plate number) they can impound your car. But this probably was not that. You were simply robbed. You handled it well. It is not worth losing your car or worse. My advice is don’t drive long distances if you have American plates although I did not follow this advice. Crooked cops will take advantage.

I mentioned when cartel killed people nearby you at your home near the lake, that Mexico was not safe. I guess you didn't think it could ever happen to you; very naive? You're lucky they didn't impound your car. I moved to the country of Panama just over a year ago and they only thing I find here are loving, happy people that want to help you in the event you need assistance, at the grocery store or the hardware store or wherever. I'm not going to warn you again because as my Dad used to say, "Robert, you can lead a horse to water; you can't make him drink; you can only make him wish he had." I would NEVER live in Mexico...but to each his own. I would have nightmares for the rest of my life if it happened to me. - Sincerely, Robert Stroney 12 15 2023 9:33 PM Central Time
