My daughter who is a professional Marie Kondo organizer helped me declutter and I do not miss a thing I donated. I can’t believe how much left the house. One thing that helped me let books go was to distinguish between books that I read and would not read again and books that I read and would read again. I was able to donate about 150 books to a local used bookstore whose profits go to support adult literacy. All of the rest I let go of went to a local thrift store that has a large food donation program. Decluttering was a win/win!

Very small suggestion: when asking someone to sort cords and cables, sit and untangle then and separate them with twist ties. Then hand the "cable expert" in the house the box of separated cables. They are far more likely to sort them quickly. When just handed a tangled box of cables they will just put it aside forever!
@sheila39362 жыл бұрын
It also helps condense like 3 boxes down to 1. Just went through the same thing myself.

Def! Unfortunately we just didn’t have time for that because of our timeline and they were fine with just putting them in a box for this particular project, but everyone and every project is differnt

Thats a nice gesture, but if the cord expert wanted his/her cords, they should take the time to are care of them and untangle them instead of shoving them down a black hole.. 🤷♀️ to me, unless you're a child who doesn't know better, take care of your stuff to help it last 🤗
@JlNXED2 жыл бұрын
THIS! i had to untangle and do a rough sort of about 3 big bins worth of cables for my dad, but it made it easier when the time came to declutter and store and put to use, otherwise we probably wouldn’t have moved as fast or gotten rid of any and kept it stored like the mess it was in

It's always such a joy when you find the floor in a room like that. When I was in the process of decluttering, everything got dumped in the craft room, and it was beginning to look like your room. I have only recently got it all cleared out and painted the walls. When it was done I stood in the middle of the room, spun around with my arms out, and cheered. I've been binge-watching decluttering channels too. I hope I get motivated like you did. 🙏🤞My problem is chrinic pain and fatigue from an autoimmune disease. I've had a couple of good decluttering/cleaning sessions by setting a timer for 20-30 mins (depending on how I feel), then rotate through different areas or zones, stopping in one area and moving on to the next when the timer goes off. I find that it helps me keep going if I see a little progress throughout my home rather than getting bogged down in one area. I do have ADHD too. 🐿Squirrel! I take rest breaks as needed between timed sessions but have learned to set a timer for that as well, because it's too easy to not get back up again if I don't LOL. If it means having to rest for the entire next day, so be it.

Fantastic and motivating job, April and Mama-April. The sheer mountain of physical stuff is one thing, but it's the emotionally baggage you both went through which is the hardest part. It's also motivating to know you're opening up the space for both your parents' interests and creativity - allowing them space for themselves. Those twenty minutes are an excellent way to avoid being overwhelmed - somehow they make it easier to start - perhaps because you don't think you have any chance of actually completing the task so it loses the pressure? I don't know, but it works! Thank you for the flyby pupper Dirk at 15:04 - I'm always happy to have a pupper flypast. Also the shots of pupper Dirk from above with his little round tummy are appreciated. I want to squish him so much!

You are your mom are awesome!! Tell her that she is doing great, dealing with all the stuff, decisions and emotions. It will feel so rewarding to reclaim that room and make space for your parents creative hobbies. I helped my parents with some decluttering this weekend. They have lived in the same house for 41 years (I just turned 40 this May) and they have almost never thrown away or said no to anything...including big furniture from dead relatives. So we declutter now and then (I live a couple of hours away from them and we don't have time or want to declutter every time we meet) and they seem to enjoy their space. Lots of love to you and your parents!

Question for you, in one of your videos you said how much you dislike fake plants. What do you recommend for extremely high places in the bathroom I have 2 shelfs areas above the doors. Hey Robin! That’s her opinion on fake plants. Fake plants have a place and a purpose. I was a decorator for years and to this day I have fake plants in my house. Buy what you like. Maybe cascading down a little. Put them in some pretty pots. Our homes should reflect what we like. What makes us happy. Add other things you like. Maybe large shells, ceramics you enjoy, glass jars filled with vase fillers that I’ve seen at Target. My one suggestion, scale. Go for it!!
@SpaceMakerMethod2 жыл бұрын
I probably said that about fake plants when I was in Korea 🤣 and we didn’t have any good fake options. But there are a ton here! I’m a huge believe in adding green wherever you can and honestly, fake plants are sometimes better if you have pets at home anyway! I’d say go for it! And if it’s high up, no one will really notice!

I certainly don't consider myself a minimalist, but the amount of 'stuff' your parents have is RIDICULOUS! Have they waited years just so you could take time out of your life to help them 'grow up' and throw out and recycle things? Something is emotionally really out of kilter with people who have to save everything like this. It's just GROSS. There is a university department in California that documented American families and their obsession with stuff ... your parents' place is only a few hours away from filling up the showers with six feet of junk. I would STRONGLY recommend that your parents seek a good 'hoarders' therapist to address what is going on with them emotionally. I am saying this respectfully, but this is OUT OF CONTROL considering their ages!!
@jenniferwright83552 жыл бұрын
Oh please. I know genuine hoarders, this house is nothing like it.
@SpaceMakerMethod2 жыл бұрын
Actually I don’t think there’s anything respectful in your remarks. They’ve lived in this house for 40 years and when you never go though your stuff, it all accumulates. And to address your “there’s something emotionally wrong” with them, they dealt 4 family deaths all back to back before the pandemic hit, 1 of which would be unbearable for any parent. So yes, there is a lot of emotion stored in this room, a lot of which she’s processing while the camera isn’t on. Please don’t be rude on my channel.

It’s been mentioned in every video in the series that a good portion of that room were possessions of family members who passed. Everyone grieves in their own way and time. Your lack of empathy is astounding. Apart from that, it seems pretty standard for people with passions and hobbies to accumulate related stuff. Sewing can definitely be one of those space consuming passions. I’m impressed how much her mom was willing and able to purge. Lovely team work throughout the videos.
