@@NorthernMudlarks The Navajo have a traditional method they use to achieve a glossy surface. They make their pottery and allow to dry hard. They find a smooth, river rounded stone that's not gritty and rub the pots surface with it making it shiny. They then use metal tools to scratch/carve traditional designs. Stone rubbing the interior makes the item waterproof. Like you, they excavate their own clay from river beds. Where they live was once an ancient inner sea in the cretaceous, so mud and sand of differing qualities is abundant. A potter often keeps their smoothing stone for life.

Wonderful day out, with some special finds, especially the red clay! Those are the sweetest, little miniatures you both made. When Gail was shaping the rectangular shape, I thought, “Oh, she’s making a perfume brick.”, which is something I saw for the first time on “Si-Finds” KZbin channel the other day, when he was digging with a couple of friends in a bottle dump. It was a little brick, about the same size, marked with the words, “perfume brick”, and the man who found it said that it would be soaked with a bit of perfume to make a lady’s chest of drawers smell nice.

Great video just a heads up its much easier to carve when the clay is semi dry. Again this applies to slab clay as well let it dry out if you have some plaster slabs this is ideal for wicking excess moisture from the clay. When making joins for the slab use a slip mixture and keep water to a minimum the idea is to maintain the rigidity to the clay adding water makes it floppy but Im sure you have probably worked that out by now. :)

@@NorthernMudlarks another thing is the elasticity, french say "chamotter". it's a verb, and it's about the way you need to knead the clay a lot to make it more cohesive and elastic. this way, it also dries and it help a lot to maintain its shape :). you need to knead a lot the bunch of clay, in every directions, folding it and smash it, the same thing than some bread dough. and the texture will be way better and usable :)

When I saw your clay brick, I remembered something from one of your fellow mudlarker's videos. Nicola and Simon were digging at an old dump site. Simon found a tiny unglazed brick about lego size, and it was stamped perfume brick. They said that people would spray the brick with their favorite perfume or cologne and leave the brick in a drawer with the clothes. It seems like a clever idea, though I would wish for something prettier than a brick, maybe a perfume tablet with the impression of a decorated perfume bottle I have. It really is fun watching your videos and being inspired by the things you are doing. ♡
