Can I ask are you intending to install a safety fence around the silt trap? it could probably do with a wild life escape ramp. On a project that size a double silt trap in series might have been a wise move. Have you considered your planting scheme for the island as they are prone to erosion.I would recommend willow reed or iris. Your tractor wheel will not hold your lilly plants they will easily bridge the rim in a scheme like that I would use a concrete ring of the sort used for large drains sink into pond bed partially then fill to eighteen inches below the rim this will prevent the lillies spreading via their root system however it will not prevent spreading by seed

Thanks for the questions, ill try answer them all as best i can. Silt trap: Short answer yes, although we have an issue with the silt trap at the moment, looks like we have a open field drain in it that we missed. So there will be some maintenance due on that this spring to find it and close it up. We have a couple of out ramps in the trap, will probably get some video of the repair this spring and will upload. We were somewhat limited in size of the silt trap due to location and the field drain layout. We will be looking to manage the silt in time, making sure we get a nice rich silt layer using products like siltex when and if required. Planting scheme: We have planted 1000's of marginals over the lake there will be video updates on the planting soon. It didnt quite go to plan.. the joys of mother nature😂 Lillys: Thanks for the concrete ring suggestion, that sounds like a mega upgrade to what we have..I went to see a local syndicate lake where they had used the same tracktor rim system and managed to keep the pads contained for the last 10 years, figured it was worth a shot.. even if it only bought me a few years free maintenance.

Where can I find some material on how lakes are constructed? Are they any guidelines that you could share?

Please fence or cover the silt trap. Safety 1st 😂. What a fantastic project, as we have taken many away from land to build on. Good to see a reverse 👌

Field drains go into the lake and then back into the field drains which eventually make it into the river stour via various small tributarys.
