Hi Vera & Christian, this is the third time I have put a public comment on any channel simply to say thanks for the entertainment, education and for making me laugh. You put those of us in the UK to shame with your excellent command of your second language. Most of my countrymen can't articulate themselves as well as you guys!! Keep the content coming. Yourselves and Henning Wehn have proved that Germans DO in fact have a sense of humour. Thank you for your entertaining and informative videos . Also I echo someone else’s comment , you proved it’s possible to do pretty involved repairs to your own vehicle without € 50.000 worth of workshop equipment and tools ,just research your subject and a methodical and calm approach. And of course a sense of humour. Subbed and binge watching. Thanks .

Oh, you are talking about a Toyota. When working on a Land Rover Discovery , you do need tools,, and you need to be able to fabricate special tools. We use our lathe and mill all the time, to fix our cars. Almost on every bigger job. Or you need to buy the special tools for a lot of money. It is not a beginner automechanics car. But if you have the skills and the tools, you are definitely able to own one the coolest cars out there, for little money. 👍🙋‍♀️

Dear Vera & Christian, I’ve only started watching you for two days, and I’m completely hooked! You two are unique in a whole list of ways. I love Christian’s obvious knowledge of engineering and his willingness to absolutely get stuck in, no matter what. In particular his diagnostic efforts & logic, which always works, but not always quickly! The daft trash bag issue made me laugh out loud. It’s just the sort of rabbit hole I myself could so easily fall down. The power of assumptions! But bloody well done in the sheer doggedness and (correct) refusal to “fire the parts cannon”. While that so often succeeds, you don’t learn as much if anything compared with the route you took. Vera is endlessly supportive, maybe even indulgent, in that she never tells Christian what to do, but she’s clearly equally smart and determined, but accepts her man must do things the way his mind & spirit takes him. You’re both humble, too. I love what I watched. A new highlight was explaining how the oil pressure standards were changed in the more powerful motor despite that representing a reduction in stringency. I agree it’s a bean counter decision, almost certainly fought against by engineers, because they KNEW the consequences, statistically. I’ve recently retired from “big pharma” and biotech. Exactly the same kinds of decisions are increasingly being made on human safety. You’d be reasonable if you assumed this would never happen, but you’d be wrong. It’s bean counters vs the people like me. I do understand the need to run a profitable business, but no known avoidable deaths is the right number. It’s impossible to have a 100% safe medical treatment. But known safety liabilities that can relatively cheaply be engineered out? I couldn’t bear that even this is a monetary consideration first and foremost. Enjoying more LR time! We own a 2017 Evoque 300ps petrol auto in beautiful Autobiography trim. Nice vehicle to be in.

Sensor still works, but I get intermittent error messages on the dash after longish journeys that the oil level system is unavailable. Independent Land Rover garage has quoted 8.5 hours for this job and I'm supplying the genuine Land Rover parts which they are happy to fit. Thanks for teh video and now understand why its an 8.5 hour job to replace £100 worth of parts.

I have unfortunately done a few of these and I'll tell you what I think happens. The same sensor is used on BMW's only the body of the sensor and electrical connector are outside the oil pan. I believe that the sensor was engineered to be submersed in oil, but the connector was not. Being submersed in oil with changes in temperature ranging at least 200 degrees causes the small clip inside the electrical connector to expand and contract ultimately causing it to release from the sensor. If they had used a locking tab on the connector like VW or MB this would never have happened.

Hello and thank you for doing a very thorough job in your videos. We have a 2012 RR Sport HSE Luxury and its been a great car so far. It does have the 3.0L ttdi Crank snapper engine in it with about 135000kms now, still in perfect working order. I was aware of the issues regarding this engine for quite some time and weve owned this car since new, so I started on a service schedule from the begining with service intervals of 7-10,000 km oil changes or every 6 months whichever came first with Penrite 5-40W a great local synth oil in Australia. The local LR dealers here were doing service oil changes under wty every 20k but i did interim services because of the issues people were having in the hope I would mitigate against this. I have no idea which oil pump we have in the car but next time i have the front of the engine appart ill have a look. So far we've also done the timing belt and all the upper engine rocker covers and intake manifolds replaced and throttle body inlet due to minor oil leaks from the top end and on further inspection it was clear the engine plastics manifolds and covers were cracked on the seam joins and leaking everywhere. eventually the engine went into limp mode one day and what started about two weeks earlier with a minor drop of oil on the driveway ended up with a limp mode and engine loss of power while my wife was on her way to work.. ( crazy prices for these parts here in Aust all the components cost about 3k ) and we ended up spending about 1k in additional items (lower ball joints and suspension bushes and new air compressor pump for the suspension which was taking too long to go up or down and would send errors to the computer saying timoeut error suspension). Any way appert from these items in 11 years there have been no other major issues so far. The vehicle is now 11 years old and runs perfectly. I know they can be a bit difficult to work on but My god the thing is a beast to drive. So smooth on the road and so quiet and comfortable, we love it. The components are all massive and over engineered compared to the other 4 cars we have ( 2009 Ford focus LV Xr5 5 cyl 2.5 turbo, VW Golf R 2010 2L turbo & VW Amarok V6 3.0L TTDi - yes we have a few cars and a Vespa :) ) id like to say you've done a great job and hope many other people also benefit from the info you provide. I do have a question regarding the online manual you're using. Where can i find that ( maybe you can supply a link for us so we can purchase it as well) and i do have a question regarding the gearboxes. Ive never replaced the oil in this gearbox ( 6spd Auto) and after this long 135,000kms its still going smoothly and strong. however im sure its long overdue. The factory provided service book says lifetime oil and i know thats rubbish but can you do a video on this if you have time one day as it would help me do the same on my vehicle. I wish you both every success and thank you once again. very informative and entertaining.

Another great programme from both of you. If Landrover have made a device to stop the electrical snap connector supposedly jumping apart then they must know that this is a known problem and if a problem occurs with this sensor it should be a free fix from Landrover. The person on the production line fitting the snap connector may have not understood that the connector should snap shut. I wonder how many vehicles they did. :)

Fantastic repair. I love when one has a go, and tell many not to be afraid. Having a go is the way to go. It can be frustrating, but fun once you get the job done. I am going to purchase one of these but haven't decided weather to get a petrol 4.4L V8 or the Diesel version of the LR3 or 4 Thanks for sharing Subscribed.

Great work. 2 small things: 1. Oil level measure is available from cold without the CAN x 2 hack. 2. The hack does not need the door open.

Great tip at the end to get the oil level without the engine temp + 10 minutes stupidity. I'm making a note of that one for sure!

I have a LR4, this amount of work scares me. No wonder i gave up on major repairs on cars. Too old and insufficient tooling. Love the banter between you two as you work through the repair. Makes me laugh in light of the complexity.

I also don´t like the additional complexity of the SDV6 comparred to the LR3. We will make a video about this at one point. Christian

I have a D2 that I’ve brought back up to standard.. I checked the famous oil pump bolt, then discovered the timing guides were breaking up. Front end of the engine stripped and re-timed the engine, i was super proud Ive never gone that deep into a car repair before.. perfect repair, alles gut. But I had sleepless nights about it.. I think watching this video will give me a few more.. Well done guys.. it’great you can manufacture parts like that.. Does every German have a lathe in their shed🤔 I’m new to the channel, great videos..

You two are awesome! The commentary is hilarious! As a FORMER '07 LR3 and '15 LR4 owner(and '07 RR Sport, '12 RR and '15 Discover Sport, the amount of issues, time, $$$$$$ and finally a lawsuit, I can definitely relate. I hated those cars as much as I loved them but after going Land Roverless for 2 years I just bought a 2000 P38 so I can do my part and put more money into the economy. Good luck with the LR4 and you got a new subscriber! Vera's commentary is absolutely amazing!!

Wow. And thanks. Our policy is to never go to a Land Rover shop. This way we want to save money. And avoid law suits 😂 or in my case a „barfigth“ in their workshop 😂😂😂 Christian

At least you can fix the P38 when it goes wrong. That old V8 can be tuned by the local blacksmith.

Christian, I just replaced all of my control arms on my LR3 (8x), and I can't help but think that the reason your upper control arms are under so much tension is because the two bolts holding the control arm to the chassis were tightened with the control arm pushed up to try and access the bolts. If the car was at ride height (as per the manual) when the bolts were fastened, there would not be so much tension on the control arm. When doing mine, I noticed that the control arms are held in place after they are torqued, which makes sense as the car will spend the majority of it's time at normal ride height. The difficulty is getting to the bolts to torque them with the car at ride height. It is much easier to torque the bolts if the arm is pushed up and out of the way. Your upper control arm bushes won't last as long as they should if they aren't fastened with the car at ride height (465mm from drive shaft centre to bottom of wheel arch shroud).
