Doing maintenance on weekends has always been an English car owner thing, tuning the SU's , checking the oil level in the carbs, making sure the brass tube from the engine to the Smith temp gauge hasn't sagged onto something hot.

My Discovery Series 2 is extremely reliable because I built it that way. Now I have over 4 in lifted suspension travel with no sway bars and Johnny joints with all Polly bushings and adjustable shocks. The Toyota 4Runner has no articulation in the front and doesn't have traction control that works worth a damn😂 so you just got something easier since you don't like to make things more reliable you just fix them when they brake. Owning a Land Rover is making it reliable not working on it constantly because you're unaware of how to make it reliable. Some people can handle them some people can't but the people who can enjoy them much more because they perform much better off and on Road

Hi guys. Christian and Vera. I've been watching your videos for a year or so and really enjoy both your humour and skill you display., I am based in Oz. Sometimes smile when you mention your 16 year "old" Disco, I'm a proud owner of a 25 year old P38, 1/3 my age, which I've been maintaining for some 13 years and everything still works 100%, 202,000km How great these units are if you look after them and as you say, keep on top of service. Someday I might go the LR3 but but as mine is still so good, no hurry.

I hope this makes you smile - I suffered several strange HDC errors on my 2011 Range Rover - I then discovered that if I leave the front door open (for maintenance) that my dog jumps in the car and crosses to the passenger seat to sleep in peace. The process of crossing over often means a paw on the HDC button. The problem is not entirely solved but is now an easy fix. Thanks again for another great video.

Hi Vera and Christian, You either love a Land Rover or you don’t . My dad owned a short wheel base series 1 , in which my brothers , sister and myself were taught to drive . It had no comforts , but I loved it . The gearbox had no synchro rings , thus made changing gears a tad different , but she was very powerful. Owning a Land Rover , either you trust the workshops , and have a “ big “ bank balance , or you love a Land Rover , as the both of you do and are able to do all repairs , plus machining , and improvising ( as we say in South Africa , “ n boer mask n plan “ - translated “ a farmer makes a plan “ ) Thanking you Vera and Christian

Nice tip on periodically changing the vehicle height to keep the valve blocks fresh. I experienced this issue a couple of years ago but the leak was much slower and took overnight to see any difference. Could never identify the leak so I took the expensive shotgun approach. Ended up being a bad air line from the block to the drivers front strut. The helmet is a nice touch. You win a safety award!

Hi guys I drive a Toyota hilux Revo in Thailand, I can confirm it has no gas struts on the bonnet , but I never need the bonnet up so I’m guessing that’s why Toyota don’t fit them , don’t need winter tyres here the lowest temperature I saw in the cold season was 19c , it’s now 35 36 37c every day and the app says feels like 41c today, I only have iced coffee or iced lemon tea daily, I’m new to your channel ( only a few days ) but it enjoy the content and the chat between you two , I was a mechanical engineer in the past and retired early (59) to Thailand almost 2 years ago , in Scotland I drove a Honda CR-V , I just love good reliable cars, Keep up the great content, this is the second idea in a row that Vera don’t don’t swear it in 🤣🤣🤣 , I’m going to have a swear box here and every time she swears I’ll put 100 baht ( 2.5 € ) in it , I think I will I’ll have enough money to replace my Toyota Hilux by mid 2025 😂😂😂 Regards Davy 🏴🇹🇭🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

Because now, being too old to deal with the many maintenance issues that seem to plague the LR's I like to see what the Toyota has saved me from. Great work. Yep. Front right valve a past hangout of mine..best capable LR I had was a L322. No suspension worries but in winter the door seals would freeze so hard, could not open doors..and on the windy beach one time, sand in the door seals squeaked like mice so bad I had to pull over and use wipes to clean them! True. The best 4x4xfar !

I love your videos. It always makes me laugh and you guys do not sugar coat anything. The real deal D3 which gets hammered with suspension fault. I think 1 important thing before you buy a D3 is to make sure you have a local independent Land Rover mechanics, not only that they repair Land Rovers, they also owed them. Luckily I have a trusted mechanics here in Huntington Beach CA " CARRS4X4. I have a 2006 HSE.

What your working on is one of the reasons I gave up wanting the new Defender. I considered ordering a basic 2 door with only coil springs, but thanks to TFL's youtube on the one they got that was exactly like the one I wanted that killed the whole thing. At 150 miles they had check engine light come on and they took it to Land Rover/Jaguar of Denver, Colorado and after a few week the brilliant factory engineers could only recommend that the 4 cyl. turbo engine be replaced.. So now I have a 2018 Honda CRV that I drive to Walmart and the doctor and being 76 years old I don't need to deal with any Land Rovers.

You are correct on the maintenence, I work on a few Defenders, people buy them thinking they are a Ford Focus, they don't maintain them, they fail to realise that they are a specialist vehicle requiring the correct servicing. It also annoys me how people say that they rust, yes, they do but most are getting old, check out some of the Audi A8's that have their rear axle rusted away at 7 years old. Great video as usual 👍

Hi both, love your chat, laughs, and serious talks, It makes the world go round.. Talking about rounds, I owned an early 2-door plus back door turbo diesel Discover 5 speed, I did extensive welding underneath when I got It but had It for 10 years as my daily driver.. It was a 1991 model so had very little (Landrover word) ELECTRICKERY in It, Loved that car, but still ran happily at 240.00 miles had to sell It as It had a clutch and my bad left leg got worse in traffic using the clutch.. Where possible I made my own service tools for cam belt changes getting diesel pump Injection timing spot on so it drove very well. After a few years and looking at many Landrovers I ended up with a "HIPPO" a 2004 model Freelander automatic HSE spec that I now love except it's quite small to get in and out of but once In very comfortable to drive.. Has the BMW turbo diesel power plus its FBH (fuel-burning heater) to speed up engine and cabin temperatures.. Thanks again, Ian - UK..(aged 74 & 3/4s) lol

The factory air system is one of this cars redeeming qualities!! My I suggest more videos on air suspension. Maybe replacing Desiccants. Had to do front airbags on my L322, the only difficult part was freeing the strut hub pinch bolt that had rusted and seized solid. This was worse of course on the nearside. Needed a day soaking in penetrating fluid and then application of heat to finally free it. Repairs always seem to take longer than they should on Land Rovers! It’s just a shame that nowadays Land Rover engineers are more interested in design and attracting city buyers than investing time to ensure that the vehicles are easy to maintain. The engine bays are not designed with enough space to allow easy access. Great channel - always look forward to your Sunday videos.

I also had a suspension related fault which took up my whole Saturday this week. Had that issue where the abs kicks in and the front suspension drops and you get the HDC error. What a pain but after going through the 6-8 possibilities I got it fixed. Ended up having to re calibrate the suspension with the Autel, find and fix a water leak, charge the battery, inflate tyres with a digital compressor and reset steering angle and just like that sorted. So so easy 🤣 I think I need to repair my Pajero so I can have it ready to go on days like this.

Great video as always. One thing that slightly worries me is using detergents and degreasers near electrical connections and switches. As long as you quickly rinse them with clean water, you should be ok. However, I have had problems with degreasing detergents on the upper rear door opening switch, because the seal between the metal door and the plastic handle had deteriorated on my 16 year old Discovery 3. I replaced the switch twice before I realised that the seal was the problem, allowing the detergent to short it out when I washed the vehicle. A simple bead of clear silicon cured the problem. But it did highlight the damage these detergents and degreasers can cause to electrical components.

Interesting video, as always. But one very good thing about the Discovery is that you can still get all the parts. I have a 12-year old Nissan X-Trail Mk.II (while I am still saving up for my D4) and I have a cracked pressurised air hose that is 'no longer available" (Renault engine in the X-Trail). After many days trying, the garage have discovered that an identical holse was used in a Vauxhall (ie: Opel) engine and will fix that tomorrow morning. Thank goodness as, starting at 04:00 on Wednesday I ve an 1,800km journey across Europe from the UK to Slovakia. That old X-Trail is a pretty unique beastie as everything at a similar price is smaller and worse (including the Mk III X-Trail) - the only viable replacements to give the capacity is a D4 (D3), Toyota Land Cruiser or Mitsubishi Shogun - and the D4 is definitely the best. I only wish I could pay you for a patch that did not require having a PayPal account. Looking forward to the next video and seeing what happened at the TÜV (was it the rear light that was brighter one side than the other?). Have a great Christmas.

Tüv will take a bit. There will be a few videos in between. All funny. Thanks John. Christian

I had the exact same issue with my D3, as with yourselves, delivery on a genuine one was too slow, and expensive! So I fitted the amazon one, 7 months later it is still good.👍

I really enjoy your smart vids. Did you ever consider to show us a list of all your repairs on the D3 and D4, in order of date and kilometers done?

I don't think there's enough paper in the world to write all of that down on.

I don't think we will do that. We work on several different cars and any one of those repairs can happen at any given time. Each Discovery owner should know the maintenance schedule anyway. Can be found on the disco3.co.uk website. Or they can sign up to our Patreon account. Our Patrons get a indepth help. 🙋♀️Vera

Thanks for the video Vera and Christian, I emailed you a link to some photos of our Disco in the snow here in Australia, pretty much the same as German snow, just upside down :D :D Thanks for the walkthrough, I'm going to follow it very closely as soon as I find some time around doing family stuff, renovations and gardening.

😀👍got it and looke at the pictures. I actually zoomed into the license plates to check that you are indeed in Australia with all that snow. 😅🙋♀️Vera

From Australia we’ve noticed that you guys up there that the tyres are round.😮 we have oval tyres because it work better with the Corrugation on dirt roads. Makes for a smooth ride.😊

I was always wondering what the secret is to get a smooth ride. Hopefully your mates will not be mad for telling us this well kept secret. Christian

This video is absolutely brilliant and hilarious. I love it! I am the idiot to panics when something flashes on my new to me range Rover L322 (4.2 Supercharged). It’s 15 years old and I want to keep it for another 15 years!!! So I am not going to buy a Toyota, I’m going to push through the anxiety watch videos like this, read some manuals, and get with the program! I actually opened the bonnet for the first time since buying it two months ago yesterday to put some washer fluid in and somehow the way everything is bolted together makes sense so I’m here for it. More videos please this was just soooooo entertaining and useful! And yes, it is bad a** 🎉 Namaste 🙏

I have a handy use for the air suspension on my LR I use it to connect and disconnect my trailers by raising and lowering the car instead of using the jockey wheel
