for wire management i recommend what is called "wire spaghetti" it is a plastic flexible tubing , with a split in it for easy installing. then only zip-ties can be used to attach it to frame or tabs to secure the harness. it comes in different sizes as well. it also protects the wires from abrasion.. good luck and have fun! i hope this helps.

One advantage extra wires have in a plug is they help fill a hole that is also a place for moisture to come in, albeit not exactly water tight. I'd just cut extra wires the same short length and call it a day but it's clean to take them out. I wonder if it would be worthwile to put a dab of silicone sealant over the empty holes to help keep it water resistant. Databyter

It was a time crunch thing. In every race vehicle you have to go through and check, double check, and triple check everything. This is why it's so hard to develop a winning professional race team. You can't overlook anything. When you buy a premade off the shelf wiring harness you're going to need to modify it. Walter should go hang out at Chad's Fab for a bit when they're doing wiring. I think he would learn a lot. You still has a great first race and there's a lot of potential there.
@marvindebot3264 Жыл бұрын
I replaced all my vital fuses with breakers on the racecar, stock fuse boxes are not made to withstand this usage which is another good reason to use breakers. As for fusible links they should all be mounted on a board if you can't replace them with breakers. That harness is a freaking nightmare and should be replaced with a custom one using heavier wire; I'd consider the current one only good for making sure things work on delivery. Ideally, at some future point, I'd ditch it all including the stock ECU and fit a Haltec ECU and dash when time and money allow. In my experience, the stock ECUs do not tolerate the dust, heat and vibration of race conditions for very long before becoming problematical, especially off-road. While using the stock one it is important to isolate from all three as much as possible. The issue of course is that protecting against dust (and water) while protecting against heat is not easy. I use an IP68 enclosure that is insulated, shock mounted and has air from the fresh air breathing system forced thru it creating positive pressure with clean air. I keep a silica gel pack in there as well to combat moisture and change it prior to every event. Walter is a wiring machine, I can do it but I certainly don't enjoy it. Making a harness takes me forever and it never looks as good as the ones you guys have made from scratch.

I have a similar custom wrench. I was working on my 1982 Reliant Wagon, and the pipe from the catalytic convertor was loose. Talk about an awkward location, I had to have a wrench cut down to about 3" long to be able to use it in that tight spot.

Did Chad Fad look at your wiring harness? You really need some flexible wiring harness wrap. I wouldn't rely on electrical tape to offer much in the way of heat resistance. You all have spent considerable time to get things correct on Nessie. You need to make sure that wiring harness looks as professional as the rest of the build.
@MischiefMakerTV Жыл бұрын
We used the same fabric tape they come with from the factory and added 2 layers (and some cases 3 layers) of heat shielding to the sections of the harness that run anywhere near the exhaust. The remaining portions of the harness just have 1 layer of heat shielding.

You are right and that will absolutely happen at some point. Walter was convinced the minute that all the old harness protection started cracking and crumbling away (and the state of the harness clips being so brittle).
