There is a lot happening in this episode! We get the rudder and nose wheel all hooked up, so that means we have steering again on the Free Abandoned Airplane! Jason and Steve flew over to Forward Aero in York to pick up a tire tube for the Piper Seneca. While they were away Joe and Sam removed the engine from the Kitfox. We also gave a call to the winner of the Austin Healey and he was so excited that he one the car! Welcome back to Rebuild Rescue!

Great job boys! Owned a 69' 421A for 45 years and after not using for the last 20 years. Had to trade kids for airplanes, not a good trade. Now the kids are grown, back to my Eagle. Have spend the last 4 years doing what your doing. Biggest job I've taken on. Everything cost twice what I est. and takes me 3x the time I had guessed. Next plane I want will be a rental. Stay with it, your on the downwind. Got to love it!

Dear Jason, You made me happy be seeing you and Joe working together again on the Cessna 401. It looks like the complete steering system of this wonderful plane is working perfectly so you can strike some out of the to do list of the refit of this plane. I’m also happy to learn Joseph’s reaction when he was the lucky winner of the Austin Healy Sprite. I wish him and his family a lot of joy with this classical car what party became so beautiful thanks to Yuriy V Livarchuk. I guess you know him rather well😀. I look forward to your next vlog and send you love from the Netherlands

Reeaally enjoyable episode 😃 Great work guys. Love seeing progress on all the aircraft you guys have. The 401❤ will be a dream to fly and enjoy. I know taking one apart is easier however when it comes together like your doing it, this will be a seriously nice aircraft! New aircraft dont get this type of attention. It will be huge when engines, interior, paint are complete. You will forever enjoy this aircraft! **Great work**! Love from Australia!

I imagine that the cables through the length of the fuselage connecting to the rudder must be extremely important. A frayed cable could stick on a pulley wheel preventing operation of the rudder - or the cable could even break! The pulley wheels must be equally important for the same reason. But even so - you could probably still live! You can fly and land the aircraft without a rudder...

I have no background in aviation, just a curiosity and interest. I started with the first episode and got to where you taxied for the first time with both engines and thought “oh, they’ll be flying this in no time”. Then you proceed to basically disassemble the entire aircraft 😂. I have so much respect for the level of attention and precision it takes to make an aircraft air worthy, but honestly had no idea until I watched this series. I am fully invested and can’t wait to see the day when this thing is completed. Kudos to you and everyone involved in the hard work you have put into this. Sincerely, a new follower. 🤘

Hi Jason!! Right rudder pedal should deflect the rudder to the right. The air coming down the fuselage strikes the rudder and pushes the tail to the left. That points the nose to the right in the direction of the pressed right pedal.

Jason, At 43:30, you are talking about the rudder control meganism and calling it a "push-pull" system. Sorry, but that is completely wrong. This is a "pull-pull" system. On each side of the bellcrank is a cable that pulls on the bellcrank. Pushing with a cable is very difficult. A "push-pull" system uses a rod that pushes or pulls on a lever that controls the rudder or elevator or ailerons.

I admit the fact of these videos that parts that are sitting for long periods, especially on airplanes need careful expectation and lubrication to operate properly... And that a bad or well-used parts that should be best replaced... Like Joe's working on the Kit Fox engine pull down, that even goes to show when that a big hammer is not working as expected it is some 'Good Thinking] that shines on why the hammer is not working as expected. Also, like what you showed in the video on working on all the 401 cables that are neeededd to operate the steering and rudder... One big job to make it all work...

Nice episode. Here's my take on what the springs are for. I understand that the springs are a Cessna-created patented. When the right rudder pedal is pressed, nose wheel steers right, and rudder's trailing edge moves right. They make landing in a crosswind more forgiving when you put the plane into a slip. For example, in a left-to-right crosswind, you would dip you left wing and add right rudder to keep the plane from turning left into the bank. But that steers the nosewheel to the right which would cause a sudden turn the right once the nosewheel touches down. The springs allow the nosewheel some "give" so that it can align itself to the direction that the plane is rolling down the runway (hopefully straight down the runway) at the moment the nosewheel contacts the pavement.

I landed a Skyhawk on a flat left side main as a student pilot. CFI shouts "what are you doing?" I said, trying not to ground loop. Kept the left side up as long as possible with the ailerons, keeping it straight with the rudder. Managed to not bend anything. He said that was a pilot control event.

Some thoughts for Joe and Sam regarding the Rotax engine: exhaust springs, use a length of coat hanger with a hook at the end. As the requirements for a 2 stroke in an airplane and in a mountain snowmobile (of which I am very familiar) are similar...ie leaving at 1000' and cruising at 6500'...that motor probably has the Rotax old school compensator, the HAC..High Altitude Compensator. It works by changing the vacuum applied to the float bowls of the carbs, thereby adjusting the fuel going up the needles and jets....so pay attention to all the vacuum lines (which on the sleds were clear fuel lines). Good luck!
