@MerlinsOldSchoolGarage and @jetskijim007 resurrect an 80's Toyota Celica and can't believe what they find in the trunk. Merlin is making it road-worthy; taking it to Chuckawalla to race the Datsun 810 with Jet Ski Jimmy....Watch to see what happens!

Always like the Celicas and Toyotas. Bought a 1989 Camry wagon with 5 speed manual transmission new. Had it 16 years and 236k miles. That thing moved 4x8 sheets of plywood, a bathtub, windsurfing gear And my belongings out to Vegas and back to the Midwest. Camped in it at the Grand Canyon What a great car. Sold it when I bought my 2006 Tundra which I kept for 14 years.

@@ohiomoto it's all rusted out- but we use it as a company truck for our wrought iron buisness! I live in El Paso Tx- so there isn't much rust issues here! Hardly ever rains! @@ohiomoto you should come look at the one next door! I see a lot of them here still running with no rust on them! Just the other day I passed one towing another one on the freeway! There are plenty here! And because we live in the desert southwest there is only surface rust on most!

My brother bought an 85 Celica GTS with the 22RE in late 84. It was quick. I bought a Civic S the same month and our other brother bought a Corolla GTS. Our folks bought a new Cressida. Go Ronny RayGun. I was trying to buy a 4Runner, but couldn't find one to buy. So I was the loner. This generation of Celica was not offered in the US market with a turbo. Let alone in the mid-range GT model. The GTS model got a 22RE, the same wheels as a Supra and those flares, but you could get the flares from the dealer for any Celica of that generation. The power window switches are aftermarket. The dead body in the trunk is also aftermarket. The car looks pretty clean overall. I have a 1990 pickup that's a pre- runner. 22RE 5 speed. It's sat for a few years and the fuel in the tank connection is solidified. Tank smells lovely.

I didn't think Celicas were ever turbo charged until the next generation or so with the Turbo Alltrac. It was fairly common in the late '80s and early '90s for people to put turbo badges on everything.

The biggest problem we found with 22R/22RE was when the plastic timing chain guide breaks and the chain rubs a hole in the timing cover. Antifreeze goes in the oil from there. We bought several with ''a bad head gasket'' that had the timing cover wear hole. Fun fact: To check it remove oil cap and blow air in radiator. If wear hole is big enough, you will hear it in the valve cover. If one is lucky it hasn't jumped time and bent the valves.
