I am Dutch, although not born in Holland (OK, "The Netherlands"). I do have family in Holland, speak the language, and did live in Holland three times at different stages of my life between 1946 and 2007. That sea is called "Waddenzee" indeed. Have you connected "wadden" (plural, or "wad" singular) with the English verb "to wade"? Because at low tide you can walk and wade from the mainland to these islands, or back. So this geology has sand banks that fall dry at low tide and "wadden" that are shallow enough to wade through them at low tide. And the deeper passages with some depth that may or may not be (just) deep enough for your well keeled boat. That barge you pointed at is a "flat bottom" and has no keel so it is adapted to these shallows. The strange plate ("zwaard" in Dutch) on its side, there's one on the other side too, is lowered into the water when sailing to prevent being pushed to the lee in certain winds.

I've never been to Vlieland, but I've been several times to neighbour Texel and once to Terschelling. The trip to Terschelling was spectacular, since we went wadlopen. You start on the mainland at low tide and wade across to the island. Sometimes the water level reaches chest height.
