Hank and Willey, that’s a silly question, OF COURSE WE ALL WANT TO SEE YOU START AND MAKE IT MOVE 😂😂😁. I can’t believe they needed a crane that big to construct that bridge over a CREEK. I’ve see much bigger bridges that didn’t need that big of a crane.

A saying goes "if you have a hammer in your tool box pretty soon everything starts to look like a nail" so maybe some influential person at the company just loved using that massive old machine?

Hank, looks like a 100 ton + machine with a luffing boom also looks like they wiped out the gantry ( the top part that sticks up to get the wire angle to hold the boom and load). They would have used the machine for driving the piles, swinging beams and concrete for the bridge. I have moved a few similar cranes when i was heavy hauling. usually the track units come off the main turn table frame the dog house comes off the turn table counter weights and boom. 5 tractor trailer loads at least 1 lowboy for the dog house. I see some of those at work today. there were couple here in Central Florida when they did the I 4 project.

Hank it was a 'small creek' when you pointed the old 'tookalook' at it but I suspect floodwater can sometimes get fierce enough to justify the cost of building that bridge just so essential services could be maintained when that happened! You know, really important stuff like pizza deliveries.

A lot of up and coming Crane operators are scared to run the old friction cranes. The American Cranes are still used by a couple of civil Construction companies for building bridges here in North East Florida and can also be seen for shipyards and Barge work. Very good reliable cranes.
@hfdzl2 жыл бұрын
If you can operate a friction machine, do clam work, dragline and hoisting work, pile driving, >you will be an operator< and would be able to run anything. Then get the big money and prestige.

Thanks for another great video. It was interesting and enjoyable. Wow and wow. That is one huge and I mean huge machine. YES and YES come back and see if you can start the engine. Would be most interesting project. Thanks to both of you for your history background of that crane. Amazing that the owners just walked away from it. Wow. The steel alone would be worth a few bucks. About it for now I guess. You both take care and be safe. Looking forward to the next video. And looking forward to the next video on this crane start up. Thanks for everything Hank and Wiley. Thank you for showing the Girl. I just watched them lift a 250 Ton water tank ROOF on a new water tower. The Crane was a Mobile 500 Ton. Yes it takes a separate Truck crane to take apart. I watched the whole take down of crane as lift of tank roof was very short. There where 12 semi trailer for crane parts, they needed. It took a while crew of riggers to take down. What amazed me was the tip of boom and the end winch rollers of crane( the part at rear base) all sit on one trailer in a special cradle. The Crane operator had a Hydraulic pin disconnect for main boom base pins. No sledge hammer. The guys really worked in Harmony. AMERICAN Hoist &Derrick first product's were Steam Railroad cranes. But the company soon broadened it's output to include all types of Lifting Equipment. It's First excavation machine was the American Railroad Ditcher of "1905" a fully Revolving Rail-mounted steam shovel used for the Purpose it's Name implies.

Yes, it would be interesting to see it run. However, I saw considerable vandal damage and I wonder how the controls were left, and how many of them are still able to control anything. Those cut wires were there for a purpose, the cutting will have disabled whatever they were supposed to control, though I suspect that most of the vital stuff was controlled by mechanical linkage. If it runs, that would be great, just please take care, though it would also be sad to see it in the wreaked state and somewhat incapable state.

Looks like the running gear is still good but of course has wear on it. American makes good stuff! When I started my all expenses paid tropical vacation on the asphalt plant we went from a 22-B track crane to a 20-ton truck mounted American to work the clam bucket to fill the plant. The bull gears wore out so we swapped it for a 20-ton P&H truck mounted. The swing clutches wore out on the P&H so we eventually ended back up with the American again with the gears ringing like Large Benjamin. Just trying to get done with the paving job on the Delta Dragway and just looking to strip the whole thing out (I had NEVER been around a crane before this) I got to thinking about some of the other stuff I'd seen and stick lube on shovels was called crater compound that looked like tar. What a better place to find tar that an asphalt plant. I got a can on a wire and dipped some hot stuff and poured it on the gears and they got SILENT! Every time from then they started ringing we just tarred them without feathers and they finished the job. It was powered by a flat head Ford 6 GAS motor that NEVER missed the 1st time. Truth is stranger than facts and I don't know that guy yall were talking about from Adam's house cat. GBWYall!

That was a very enjoyable video Hank and Whiley, it took me back many years. I built American Hoist cranes all over the world from 5292 to 9310 and 11320 with skyhorse and guy derrick attachments. The 999C your showing is fitted with a third drum in the front which is chain driven. The boom head may not be original as most American Hoist cranes had a tubular chord on them. I would really like to see you get the 999C up and running. Great video keep them coming.

Great video, guys!!..... just FYI.... The NT/NH & NTC 855ci Cummins was Never factory rated at 600hp, in Any application. The Compound turbocharged NTA was factory rated at 475hp for the optional "Owner/Operator" semi trucks of the era. The KTA was the Only Cummins truck engine ever rated at 600hp in the "Owner/Operator glory years" of the 1960's & 70's.... until the O/O spec'd 600hp ISX (w/1850 & 2050 lbs ft of torque options) of the mid/late 2000's+. Even the Marine versions of the NTC 855ci engines, were "only" factory rated at a maximum of 480hp.

Howdy Hank (and Wylie too!): If you two want to go to the effort to fire it off, I'll darn sure watch! As for the crane...somebody shouda torched her up for scrap when the prices were way up here recently...they are crashing now, so most likely too big and too much work to even torch it apart. If the engine was not damaged that might be worth saving for someone that needs one.
