I just got back from our vacation and one of our stops was glacier. We spend 5 days, did some small hikes with pregnant wife and 2.5 year old daughter and on final day I was able to solo highline trail with grinnel overlook. We didn't have time to get to many glacier area but after watching tour video I have a reason to go back there and do those awesome hikes. Cool video thank you 😊

Thanks so much. Trying to decide on Iceberg Lake or Grinnell Glacier. We only have time for one. Hubby and my oldest don't love heat if that changes your suggestion. Going first week in August. We do have tickets to take the GrinnellLake shuttle boat back if that changes your recs. Thanks!

Hi Sarah. Those are both amazing hikes, but I would go with Grinnell Glacier if you can only do one. It’s a “must do classic” in the Many Glacier area of the park. I hope you have a great trip. You probably already have, but be sure to get your lodging early. Cheers!

Awesome you’re going to Glacier! Carry Bear Spray and be noisy or carry Bear bells. Have fun!

Wow! Beautiful! Questions for you... Did you have to get permits to hike? Where did you stay as your home base each night? I would like to hike in Glacier with friends and maybe not camp but do the hikes like you did and then go back to a lodge each night and then go back out and hike again each day. Would appreciate the feedback!

Glad you enjoyed the video! You do not need permits to day hike, but you do need a vehicle entry pass to get in the park. Check out our other Glacier video (Top Glacier Sights in One Day) for details on the timed vehicle entry pass. For hikes on the west side of the park/Highline trail, I would stay at Lake McDonald lodge. The majority of the stunning hikes, though, are in the Many Glacier area. If you’re not camping at Many Glacier Campground, I would stay at the beautiful Many Glacier Lodge or the Swiftcurrent Inn. Either way, be sure to make your reservations very early! I hope you are able to make it to the Many Glacier area. It’s world class hiking and one of our favorite places to hike! Enjoy!

Which would you recommend more hiking to Grinnell glacier or iceberg lake?

I would definitely go to Grinnell Glacier. Aldo check out the boat ride which cuts off a few miles of hiking.

Great video. What dates did you go? I'm concerned by all the blogs regarding how crowded it is, is that true for the hiking trails as well? And finally did you need to get any sort of pass or get in a line to gain access to these hiking trails or can you just show up early and go? Thanks!
@MarknKathryn

Glad you liked the video! We went in late August/early September near Labor Day. It was busy, but not terribly crowded, and as long as you’ve planned ahead, crowds shouldn’t be an issue. No admission fee other than the park entrance fee and your vehicle reservation ticket, which you need to get in advance now. Check out our other Glacier video for details about that. The best trails/hikes are especially consolidated in the Many Glacier area which is hard to get lodging at, so be sure to reserve your lodging or campsite super early!

We went the third week of August in 2019. Kids are back to school by then, so the huge numbers of families with kids running around is greatly reduced. Glacier pretty much closes up by October, but late August/early September are fantastic times for Glacier and all the western parks. We did the 3rd week of September this year to Rocky Mountain National Park.

In order what are the best hikes for seeing the most amazing views of the mountains?
@MarknKathryn
@MarknKathryn 4 ай бұрын
The view coming out of Ptarmigan Tunnel is the most stunning by far. After that, it’s a toss up but I’d go Grinnell, Iceberg, Cracker. Highline trail has great views all the way as well. Enjoy!

Been once, I'd recommend people to take a side arm we had a bear bluff charge us. Bear spray is a joke. I had a buddy almost died he used spray and it kept changing luckily he had his 10mm or he'd be dead.

I just made our late itinerary for glacier for early August 2024 and these are all in our hikes we plan on hiking! We don’t have time for all of the highline trail but would you still suggest to hike the first 2 miles in and then turn around to get a taste of it? We will be doing this hike on our way back from Many Glacier towards Columbia Falls for our last day in the park.
@MarknKathryn

Yes, you can get a great feel for the Highline in 2 miles. The best ledge part is right at the beginning! Happy hiking!

So you don’t have to go through the sun road to go through the grimmal trail?
@MarknKathryn

Correct. Grinnell Glacier is in the Many Glacier region, not accessed via Going to the Sun Road.

@MarknKathryn

I’d hike a portion of the Highline Trail for sure, Hidden Lake Overlook from Logan Pass, Avalanche Lake and Swiftcurrent Lake. There are so many hikes in Glacier. You can’t go wrong with any of them!

@@mrpollergamesmpg7475 for all of the usual likes, your typical hiking shoes or boots are great. On the Virgin River Narrows, you will be in 1 to 3 feet of water typically, depending on the season, and the sticky shoes make it much, much easier and more fun!
