2:11 黄沙百战穿金甲 Literal translation: In yellow sand, the warriors wear golden armors and battle for hundreds of wars. It's followed by 不破楼兰终不还, which means the warriors wouldn't be coming back if they didn't conquer the enemies. Overall it's an idiom used to describe and compliment the courage spirits of the soldiers who defend their homeland. I guess the person wrote it there just because there's a lot of *sand* there, though it's not "yellow sand". 😂

It's a quote from a poem by the poet Wang Changling (王昌齡, 690-756), the famous frontier poet of the Tang Dynasty. This specific quote is still pretty famous and popular. www.exam58.com/twclsr/687.html en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wang_Changling

It was an emergency phone. That's what the cord was and the compartment on the other side is where the phone is normally stored. That one however is pretty old. They have them on the side of US70 between alamogordo and las cruces located near the fences.

They're for aircraft performing embedded (self-contained) approaches utilizing their onboard radar. The reflectors are normally placed to define the landing threshold. Military fighter aircraft and some transport aircraft utilize these systems. The positives of these embedded approaches, commonly known as AILA (Airborne Instrument Landing Aid) is that there's no ground or airfield power required to run any ground systems (they're purely passive), and there's no signal(s) such as you'd have with ILS or VORTAC that can be jammed or destroyed in a hostile environment.

I'm a fighter pilot. I've flown F-16s at Holloman afb by white sands. I've flown jets for 9 years and I have never heard of this type of landing system. Maybe this was an old school navigation system, but I can assure you that it is not currently in use and it hasn't been for the past 20 or 30 years.

The monument is in the middle of while sands missile range as well as bordering Holloman AFB. The poles you saw was just a marker that fell over. There are tons of missile, aircraft, and explosive debris in the monument. If you go deep enough, you can find used rocket boosters sticking up out of the sand like line trees. There is a large runway on the dry lakebed to the west of the monument for the space shuttle. Twice a year, in the spring and fall, you can take a tour of the Trinity site where the first nuclear bomb was tested. Also, the monument hosts an annual balloon festival where balloons launch from and fly within the dunes. You might be able to arrange something similar for paramotors.

I was stationed at Ft. Bliss on the edge of WSMR for 3 years. We would do tank maneuvers in the southern part of WSMR all the time in the 3rd ACR. Stay there long enough and you'll see all kinds of strange things. I've seen meteors and spacecraft crash into it, Patriot missile batteries missing drone targets, a ghost town, ground-based lasers firing into space, stealth fighters, the Space Shuttle on the back of a 747, stealth bombers, and even the occasional dead body. I think there's a serial killer still working the El Paso area that uses it once in a while to dump their work. The touristy area is fairly safe but I wouldn't advise venturing outside of it. Munitions all over the various tank and bombing ranges.

So the reason they don't want you touching strange objects is because they fire live ordinance (think explosives) out there and sometimes it doesn't explode but could still be live. They're pretty good at going out and disarming any ordnance that may be outside of the range (designated area for blowing stuff up). Not saying that everything out there is live or that you could even find one that is, but its just better to think everything is live since the human body doesn't take well to explosions.

Basically when you see the marker pass on the scope, you know it's safe to drop your training munitions and so forth.

Last time you were here you flew over the storage yard for commercial aircraft in Marana, the small town just north of Tucson. The air force storage facility is far larger than the one in Marana. Great video! I'm planning to go through training this year with team halo and have been watching many of your videos. Good stuff. One small piece of advice from a guy that's been married for 33 yrs. Never say your girlfriend looks like a sea lion! Lucky you lived to the next day. Keep up the good work.

Having jumped into McGregor Missile range just south of White Sands and just north of Fort Bliss (home of Air Defense Artillery). Saying this isn't a good place to fly is a bit of an understatement lol. Also as I'm sure you noticed half way up that hill, at over 4k in elevation with near zero humidity that air is THIN. Enough to have a effect on the flight characteristics of your wing. Hands down, the hardest I've ever hit the ground under a t10-d cute was near there. What you found is just a marker on it's side missing a light.

The “missile /rocket” you found was a sign with a wood anchor that would have been buried in the sand.

I wonder if that might have been a radar reflector point for calibration of range. If it is it would have been setup upright. Not sure that is what it is though.

The thing at 12:40 looks like a RADAR reflector.

looks more like a transmitter, to warn vessels of the coast. reflectors traditionally look more like a 3 sided pyramid.

Yes it is a radar reflector They're for aircraft performing embedded (self-contained) approaches utilizing their onboard radar.

Looks like a waypoint marker that use to be planted in the ground. Wiring looks like its going to what used to be a light at the top of the pole.

Excellent audio quality I noticed that errie muffled sound thru my headphones, just like I have experienced at White Sands. Love this side trip I would go out of my way to do this route any chance I got.
