Thank you for your videos, love watching, listening, learning, ( even thou I'm 68- I still learn). I wish I could have a garden again, I miss all that- I did have trouble with keeping up with the weeding--but I loved the end results. Fresh out of the garden tomatos, green beans, peppers, lettuce, corn, even potatos at different times. The satisfaction of canning the vegs. & having them all the rest of the year was a wonderful feeling of accomplishment. I was so happy for awhile.

I’ve had several dogs and after the last one I said no more. But in 2022 I got another, my married son named him Mr. Henry Iba after the famous Oklahoma State basketball coach. He’s been the best thing for me, I got him after I was diagnosed with a rare degenerative muscle disease last January & retiring in October. I wouldn’t take for him, he’s a real character!! Love the new raised beds, thinking about getting a few myself.

I lived in NM for 30 years with several serious droughts. The natives there talked about the change in weather. I was desperate to leave and finally did to Middle TN 8 years ago to be near my son with my aging. I grew up in Northern Indiana, snow, rain, etc. I still appreciate every drop of rain, water from the heavens!

Loosing a pet is no difference that loosing a human it hurts no less. Funny that some of your dogs were named after songs. I had cat for 16 years his name was Jake he ended up with kidney failure which is common in older cats. But is name was after a song too by Pirates of the Mississippi named Feed Jake Its about a dog one line in it says If I die before I wake feed Jake so this scrawny little orange and white kitten I had taken in became Jake.

Seeing Matt have to try to dig out and level your garden spot with all that rock, is exactly what I have to deal with in my yard. Rocks! Rocks! Rocks! I feel his pain with this. Looking forward to seeing these beds with vegetables growing in them. Today in AR where I live, we are having a full day of sun and high of 75 degree weather. So, we are getting a yard of dirt to add to my raised beds I built. We have been waiting for a good dry day to do this. We finally got one! 😊

Tipper, y'all are blessed to have such generous viewers. The new metal beds look great! I hope you'll eventually come around to getting another dog if for no other reason than for deer control. My son Andrew and his wife Jocelyn have a dog named Beau, who loves his mama and his quirk is that he doesn't like to eat his food as much if Jocelyn isn't around. Even when she is, he will eat one piece of kibble at a time. He's also a scaredy dog. We think he's a cross between a Corgi and a Beagle. His ears are huge and pointy...I call them bat wing ears. I have a new nickname for y'all: Mr. & Mrs. Got Rocks. If you've never heard that before, it's usually used to describe someone with plenty of money, but in your case, it describes the amount of actual rocks your soil has...besides that, y'all are wealthy with many other more important things besides material possessions. I'm glad you and Matt didn't get hurt or burned by the hot chocolate mishap. Y'all take care and enjoy your new raised beds. Hi from New Bern!

Glad to hear that you didn't get hurt when you fell, Tipper. I recently fell. Our cat, Buster, ran inside of the house. Being afraid he would pee in the house I got him and was rushing to carry him out the backdoor before he could scratch me. I quickly pushed the storm door open with my shoulder and immediately lost my balance. In my attempt to fling him out the backdoor, I ended up flinging BOTH of us out of the door. We were both AIRBORNE!! While we were flying through the air I finally realized that I better let go of him before I end up landing on top of him! I was surprised that my brain "kicked in" with enough thought to let go of him. I landed on my hands and knees 6 feet in front of me on the concrete. I scraped my shin on the edge of the top step on my way down, it left a bruise 6 inches long and 2 inches wide. I also had 2 bruised knees and palms for 2 weeks. I felt like I had been tackled by a concrete football player lol. It sure knocked me for a loop lol. I think I need one of those t- shirts that says "I do my own stunts" lol.

"I'd rather have what _looks_ level than what _is_ level" There's definitely some truth to that in certain circumstances. Sometimes you can make something technically perfectly level but it looks totally wrong because of the context of things around it. So if it's only cosmetic (doesn't need to be level to function properly) then you might as well just put it how it looks best. It's kind of like art vs science or wisdom vs knowledge.

Oh, what you said about the responsibility of pets, I hear you, girl! I have two dogs, one 25lb beagle mix and a 75lb lab mix. My little girl is sweet and wonderful and loves everyone. My big boy is sweet and wonderful WITH US and a holy terror with strangers, especially men. The only sitter I've been able to find for them is a nice lady who lives on a blueberry farm in the middle of nowhere! I love having the companionship of dogs. They're loving, sweet creatures, but they do definitely make life a bit more challenging!

The Iris will look great going down that slope. I never like mud, yucky!!! But appreciate rain when needed. Here in Indiana we had a very wet spring last year and then. ....it dried up too much. We haven't had hardly any snow or rain so far. God will provide. Those grow beds look amazing.i watched Cory's and her and Austin are so cute in their excitement. Beautiful roses and daffodils. Will you have to be concerned with wind blowing them until you get dirt in them? I like the idea alot. I watched Katie's turn your bad day around and loved her perspective! Very wise. You and Mat have raised 2 wonderful young ladies. One day I had deep cleaned my kitchen, everything scrubbed, polished...took me all day, decided to fix a big mug of hot chocolate, set it on the counter, decided I had not bleached my trash can. Somehow. ...I knocked the hot chocolate off....LOL.Chocolate everywhere. I snapped a picture and laughed. Sent it to my kids!!! We all got such a laugh out of it...kitchen got scrubbed again. Okay, you're talking dogs and that's somewhat my department. If you're able to work with big dogs then I'd like to suggest a Rottweiler. Rotties love their humans and are the smartest dogs plus they love kids!! I can tell you that they do shed quite abit, but their kisses make up for it. While some believe them to be mean that's not the case at all but they can be protective of their people. My Rottie girl was with me nearly 13 years when she passed.

You mentioned cedar being a good wood for outside use because it lasts longer than other woods. When I was growing up, my family talked about chestnut wood being what was used for outside applications. Zig-zag chestnut fences were literally used throughout the eastern part of the early United States. My aunt Nanny, and others, said a chestnut blight came and, by about 1940, had all but completely wiped out the eastern American chestnut in less than four decades. Most rural people here in the Piedmont gathered chestnuts in the fall and ate them roasted on top of the wood cook stove and/or fed them to livestock. Bald Cypress if another good wood for outdoors use, but has a limited range in the southeastern U.S.A..

I used cardboard boxes last year and clothes hampers for potatoes. Looks good. We always have old tin laying around. But save your good soil. I make like a hugel mound move my wood and leave that to compost and old soil and fill in dirt took a few trees made a border. God bless ❤️🙏

Enjoyed this! Your metal raised beds look great ! Best wishes for much success with your garden this year ! I understand about dogs . I have had dogs that just loved us , their family, but didn't have anything to do with anyone else . Dogs are definitely alot of responsibility. I've always said " they are like having a toddler that never grows up " . Matt is funny. I understand about knowung things . My late wife use to tell me i had a weskth of " useless knowledge" haha...Thanks Tipper and Matt, appreciate y'all always...God bless...🙏❤️

I agree with you on dogs Tipper! I love my dog but she is a lot of work and responsibilities. I’m up since 3:30 am because we’re having our first thunderstorm of the year and my dog is freaking out, she’s afraid of thunder, gun shots and fireworks! I think I’d rather have cats but I still have a soft spot in heart for dogs 🐶

Mat,think about 8 or 10" pieces of rebar across the front of the planters to keep the soil from pushing the planter when it fills in the back.

Me to hubby: No more cats after these two die. I want a break. What happened: both cats die suddenly and shockingly quick, one after the other. Hubby: Look at the cats at the rescue place! What happened next: Cassie and Ginger are installed as new cats in the house. I loved Matt's reaction to your near fall! 'It was sweet' he grins and says.

It's been very rainy here in Knoxville too. I kept a raised bed of lettuce ALL winter. I just covered it with 2" rigid foam when it got below 34F at night. I covered them for a week when it was single digits and they are fine now. Planted in late October...picked every two-three weeks...

I always think it's interesting what people name their pets. When our cat had kittens she had what looked like twins, except for the fact that one was a little bigger than the other one. I like names that are different, odd or funny. Sooo, I named them Nick, Nack and mama cat became Paddy Whack. 😂

Tipper, Just cut all that iris rootage off until you get to the bulb part. Replant 4 to 5 inches apart and you will do fine. They are pretty much bullet proof. Dig, split and replant every 3 to 4 years. Utah, like most of the west has been in drought forever. We are, however, having a super wet winter. I can't wait for spring!

Looking good. We had to go with raised beds. The red clay was only 6 inches below ground, not much lasted. We dug out two feet of clay, then drilled down another foot, back filled three inches with clay breaker. We then built four gardens of treated pine rectangles to a foot high and back filled with quality soil.

You can use pallet wood we did. We check to be sure it was only heat treated pallets. You could buy galvanized livestock tanks and drill holes in bottom for drainage, they have strong walls. We used child plastic wading pool again drill drainage holes. Of course they are circle. I had my husband put my wading pool up on plastic pallets so i would not have to bend down to ground. Then I planted marigolds around pallets. I like to recycle and repurposed. Save money for seeds, plants, and other tools that our labor- saving. You can put branches cardboard compost, and logs in bottom you only need the top 6-10" for good nutritious soil. I have put cardboard then 3"-6" logs on bottom then branches sticks leaves peat moss straw then manure compost and topsoil mix with potting soil. Every spring you need to add new compost or manure and top soil. Overtime the other items decompose and the nightcrawlers and microorganism love it.. Our pallets made of wood are 5 years old. they were put together not using a level just 6 42" pallets decked screwed together. We also received plastic pallets and made L shape one and a rectangle one they are nice because they come in colors. I get them free from a company that make food products . I like my raised beds because I can sit on the sides of the walls and work in the raised bed. The wood pallets I put cardboard along the inside of the raised bed for the plastic pallets i used landscaping fabric in one and cardboard in another. I haven't had to replace the liners of cardboard or fabric. My goal this year it to get a rain barrel at the end of every raised bed. I got plastic food grade barrels from same company went to you tube got directions to make rain barrel. Basically you have spigot about 2" above bottom of barrel and another hole on one side about 4" from top for overflow pipe. These barrels had hole on top we used for rain to enter in either from downspout or as it rain. We cover hole with screen to keep out leaves. By having barrel at end of raised bed I won't have to carry buckets of water. Raised beds do dry out quicker then beds on the ground. But I love them and now as I have hip problem they keep me gardening. Wish you and Matt lots of happy days gardening.

I wish I could explain why these videos do my heart good, but all I can say is I end up feeling more cheerful about life in general. I'm sure Matt's sly humor helps. Not that you're taking a poll, but I'd say that you definitely need steps to all three of those beds. You're going to be up and down those slopes a lot. Besides how tiring that would be, you'll be carrying stuff and there will be mornings when it's slick with dew or frost; so easy to lose your footing. You don't either of you want a broken leg or something. Besides, you won't always be young as you are now. One day you'll really need them. Better to build the steps right from the start. I don't mean to sound bossy; just explaining the reasons for my opinion.

I ran across a saying that I haven't heard in a long time. A friend of mine came by and we were talking about a house that is for sale and all the work that was done to get it ready to sale. His answer was it 's like putting lipstick on a pig. No matter what you do to make it look better you still have a pig since the structural should have been fixed first.

So glad y'all were gifted those 2 raised beds. I watched Corie & Austin put theirs together & they were really pleased with them. They used big logs to fill in the bottom so they wouldn't take so much soil. It's exciting to have something new in the garden each year. New changes come with new ideas. Can't wait to see the progress & what you two come up with in the next few weeks.

Hard to be patient when you are so excited to plant and get things going. When you said for things to take 'holt" I could hear Daddy sayin "Take aholt of that there and help me carry it. 😊" I love the daffodils. One of my favorites. They are a true forerunner of spring. Before you know it your garden will be peeping up through the soil. 😊

Hey Ms Tipper , BigMike here , Are the planters you all just put up, the same brand as Corey and Austions ?? I watched their video of putting theirs together. Matt was worried they would bough out , as you filled them up . Corey and Austin's planters came with metal rods that fit inside the planters that connected to each side wall of the planter, preventing the planter walls from boughing out when you filled them You can also fill up the bottom of your planter boxes with all logs of tree branches then cover with wood chips , leaves and other material, then add your top soil, mushroom dirt for the top The decaying wood will tell release nutrients back into the soil . Of your planters are not the same or didn't come with those connecting rods. I'm sure Matt could rig some up to fit across inside. I would also think of anchoring the planter boxed in place , so they couldn't move or slide of of their base . Would put the anchors inside the bed, at angles from each other like an X for better support . Just a though . BigMike
